Campgrounds near Fort Drum
Fort Drum sits in northern New York's Jefferson County, within easy driving distance of the St. Lawrence River, the Thousand Islands, and the western edge of the Adirondack Park. Options include private full-hookup parks that cater to travelers passing through and state park campgrounds strung along the river to the north.
Natural Bridge / Watertown KOA Journey is the closest full-service private option, positioned between the Adirondacks and the Thousand Islands with pull-through RV sites, cabins, and tent spots. To the north near Alexandria Bay, Keewaydin State Park, Grass Point State Park, Swan Bay Resort and Marina, and 1000 Islands Campground put visitors on or near the St. Lawrence River, with boat access, swimming, and fishing close at hand.
Most of these sites are within a 30 to 45 minute drive of Fort Drum, making day trips and short hops practical for military families, visitors, and travelers stopping between the Adirondacks and the international border.
Things to do near Fort Drum
The Thousand Islands region is the main draw. Boat tours from Alexandria Bay and Clayton reach Boldt Castle and Singer Castle, and the St. Lawrence River offers strong fishing for bass, pike, and muskellunge. Swimming, kayaking, and picnicking are standard at the riverfront state parks.
Inland, the western Adirondacks provide hiking, ATV trails, and paddling on quieter lakes and rivers. Watertown itself has grocery stores, restaurants, and the Thompson Park zoo, useful for families restocking between outings.
For visitors with ties to the base, Fort Drum's on-post attractions and the 10th Mountain Division history are within easy reach. Rafting on the Black River near Watertown is a popular warm-weather option when water levels cooperate.

The camping season in this part of New York is short and concentrated. State park campgrounds along the St. Lawrence typically operate from mid-May through mid-October, with the strongest demand from late June through Labor Day. July and August bring warm days, warm river water, and peak boat traffic through the Thousand Islands.
Early summer can be buggy near the water, with black flies and mosquitoes most active in late May and June. September often delivers the best combination of open sites, cooler nights, and fall color moving in from the Adirondacks by early October.
Winters are long, snowy, and marked by lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario, and riverfront campgrounds close by late fall. Keewaydin State Park itself remains accessible for winter day use, with ice fishing and cross-country skiing once conditions set in, though the campground loop is closed.
How to book campgrounds near Fort Drum
New York State Parks, including Keewaydin and Grass Point, are booked through ReserveAmerica. Sites can be reserved up to nine months in advance, and same-day reservations are accepted online or by phone until 3 p.m. on the arrival date. Walk-ins are permitted at campsites when space allows.
Natural Bridge / Watertown KOA Journey is booked directly through KOA's site or call center, and full-hookup pull-through sites for larger rigs should be reserved well ahead for summer weekends. Swan Bay Resort and Marina and 1000 Islands Campground are private parks that take reservations through their own websites.
For July, August, and holiday weekends, plan to book two to three months out. Waterfront and electric sites go first, especially at the state parks.
What to expect
State park campgrounds in this region are modest in facilities. Keewaydin State Park has 48 riverfront sites with showers and a swimming pool but no hookups. Grass Point offers 20-amp electric at 20 sites in one loop, with a dump station on-site, but no water or sewer at individual sites.
Private parks such as Natural Bridge / Watertown KOA Journey provide the fuller RV package: full or partial hookups, laundry, dump station, Wi-Fi, and a pool during camping season. Larger rigs and pull-through sites are available there.
Expect a family atmosphere, enforced quiet hours, and cell coverage that varies once you leave the I-81 corridor. Bring bug spray in early summer, layers for cool river nights, and a card or cash for firewood and ice at camp stores.

Booking is low-risk. New York State Parks allow leashed dogs in most campground loops with proof of rabies vaccination, so pack those records. Ask your host about a fenced delivery setup at the campground so your dog has a familiar space waiting.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to me near Fort Drum?
Yes, RV delivery in Fort Drum is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're flying into Syracuse or visiting family on post. Popular drop-off spots include Black River Bay Campground and the Watertown/1000 Islands KOA Holiday in Natural Bridge. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer this service and their per-mile fees. Delivery is ideal for first-time renters because you skip towing and unfamiliar driving entirely.

Wellesley Island State Park on the St. Lawrence River offers full-hookup RV pads, paved sites, and incredible sunsets, while Southwick Beach State Park gives you Lake Ontario beach access. The Watertown/1000 Islands KOA Holiday in Natural Bridge is a polished private option with a pool and full hookups. Westcott Beach State Park near Sackets Harbor adds another lakefront option with electric and water hookups. Wellesley Island books out 9 months in advance for summer weekends, so reserve through ReserveAmerica the moment your dates are set.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Fort Drum?
Late May through early October is prime time for an RV rental in Fort Drum, with summer highs in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and cool nights perfect for campfires. July and August are warmest and busiest, while September delivers cooler 60s, fewer bugs, and stunning Adirondack fall foliage from late September into mid-October. Winters in Jefferson County are genuinely snowy with lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario and lows often near 10 degrees, so most campgrounds close by mid-October. Book a late-September Thousand Islands RV trip to catch peak color along the St. Lawrence Seaway, plus shoulder-season pricing that's often well below July rates.
weather.gov/buf/I've never rented an RV before. How does pickup work in Fort Drum?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host in the Fort Drum area provides a full in-person walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, propane, awning, water tanks, and dump valves. They'll answer every question, no matter how basic, and many hand you a printed cheat sheet for the road. You can also message the host through the listing before booking to ask about driving the RV on upstate New York's two-lane country roads or backing into a campsite at Wellesley Island. Pick a smaller Class C motorhome rental in Fort Drum for your first trip: they drive like a large van and park easily at Black River Bay.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Fort Drum RV trip?
You're never stranded. Every motorhome rental in Fort Drum booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering tows, flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery. One call connects you to a dispatcher who'll send help to wherever you are, whether that's I-81 near Watertown, a back road in Lewis County, or a campsite on Wellesley Island. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for quick questions about quirks of their specific RV. RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after every trip. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so roadside dispatch can move faster if you ever need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fort Drum RV rental into Canada?
Cross-border trips into Ontario or Quebec are popular from Fort Drum, since you're only about 30 minutes from the Thousand Islands Bridge at Alexandria Bay. You must get written approval from your host before crossing, because insurance and protection coverage need to be confirmed for Canadian travel. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Bring your passport, vehicle registration, and a host-signed travel authorization letter for Canada Border Services. A 3-day loop from Fort Drum to Kingston, Ottawa, and back is a great introduction to Canadian RV camping. Message your host early so they can prep the cross-border paperwork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Fort Drum RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's manageable. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and large Class A coaches run 6 to 9 mpg. With New York gas commonly in the mid-$3 range per gallon in the North Country, a 300-mile loop to the Adirondacks and back in a Class C will cost roughly $90 to $135 in fuel. Travel trailers tow best behind a half-ton or larger truck and add 25 to 35 percent to your tow vehicle's fuel use. Fill up at the truck stops in Watertown before heading east into the Adirondacks, where rural prices climb noticeably.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Fort Drum?
Reserve early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. New York State Parks like Wellesley Island, Westcott Beach, and Southwick Beach release reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends often sell out within hours. Private parks such as Watertown/1000 Islands KOA and Black River Bay Campground take direct bookings 6 to 12 months out. For a July or August Thousand Islands RV trip, lock in campgrounds before March. Midweek and shoulder-season stays can usually be booked just 2 to 4 weeks ahead. If your top pick is full, set a ReserveAmerica alert because cancellations often open up about two weeks out as campers finalize plans.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Fort Drum?
Driving an RV around Fort Drum is refreshingly easy compared to big-city travel. I-81 runs north-south with wide lanes and gentle grades, and Route 11 and Route 3 are scenic two-lanes that work well for motorhomes. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially in Lewis and Jefferson Counties. From November through April, lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario can pile up quickly, which is why most RV rentals operate May through October. The Thousand Islands Bridge accommodates standard RVs under 13 feet 6 inches in height. In Sackets Harbor and Alexandria Bay during summer weekends, park at the public lots on the edge of town and walk in for the best experience.

Most state park campgrounds like Wellesley Island and Southwick Beach offer 30/50-amp electric and water hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, and dump stations. Private parks such as Watertown/1000 Islands KOA add full sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Free or low-cost dump stations are available at several Thousand Islands region state parks during the operating season. Most parks have potable water fill stations near the entrance. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor awning, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots or onboard generators (great for boondocking near the Adirondacks). Linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are often included or available as add-ons. Filter for listings with a generator if you're planning off-grid Adirondack nights, you'll have power without hookups.

Bundle delivery and a linen kit for a stress-free first trip: you literally just show up with food and clothes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fort%20Drum%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Fort Drum?
Payment is simple and transparent. When you book an RV rental in Fort Drum on RVezy, you pay the rental cost, protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons through the secure RVezy platform, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is released after a clean return, typically a few hundred to about $1,500 depending on the RV's value. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough video walkaround with your host at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and empty the holding tanks if required. Keep receipts for fuel and dump fees, they make any post-trip reconciliation effortless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Fort Drum?
An RV road trip from Fort Drum opens up some of the Northeast's best scenery. Alexandria Bay and the Thousand Islands are about 30 miles north for boat tours of Boldt Castle. Lake Placid and the High Peaks region sit about 130 miles east in the Adirondacks, perfect for fall hiking. Niagara Falls is roughly a 200-mile run west along Lake Ontario. Old Forge and the Fulton Chain of Lakes are about 90 miles south for kayaking and the Adirondack Railroad. Cross into Canada for Kingston or Ottawa with host approval. A 5-night loop hitting Wellesley Island, Lake Placid, and Old Forge is the quintessential family RV trip in Fort Drum country, all on paved, RV-friendly roads.
