Campgrounds near Frankfort, New York
Frankfort sits in the Mohawk Valley of central New York, just west of Herkimer and about a ten-minute drive from Utica. The town works well as a base for RV travelers because it puts the Adirondack foothills, the Erie Canal corridor, and several full-hookup campgrounds within a short drive of the New York State Thruway (I-90).
Most private campgrounds in the immediate area cluster along Route 28 north of Herkimer and along West Canada Creek. Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort sits in the Mohawk Valley between the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, along the West Canada Creek and next to the Herkimer Diamond Mines attraction. West Canada Creek Campground is a family-owned property in Poland, NY offering full-hookup RV sites, tent sites, cabins, on-site tubing, trout fishing, and a heated pool.
Additional options in the corridor include Scenic View Campground and Lake Chalet Motel and Campground, both useful for travelers who want simpler creek- or lake-side sites rather than resort amenities. Herkimer Diamond KOA Resort is the same property as the KOA above, listed under its shorter marketing name.
Things to do near Frankfort
The signature activity in the area is prospecting for Herkimer Diamonds, the double-terminated quartz crystals found in the surrounding bedrock. The Herkimer Diamond Mines, located on the KOA property, is open daily during the summer season, with above-ground surface mines where visitors search for and break open rocks to find the quartz crystals.
Water recreation centers on West Canada Creek. The creek is well known to tubers, and guests can bring their own tube or buy one at the KOA store to cool down on hot summer days. The creek is also one of New York's stocked trout streams, and West Canada Creek Campground offers tubing and kayaking with shuttle service, trout fishing, gem mining, themed weekend events, and hay wagon rides.
Beyond the creek, families use Frankfort as a jumping-off point for Erie Canal cruises out of Herkimer, hiking in the southern Adirondacks, and day trips into Utica.

Central New York has a humid continental climate with a short, busy camping season. Utica, the nearest major city, experiences warm summers and cold winters, with precipitation spread relatively evenly through the year and fall tending to be the wettest season. Most private campgrounds in the area operate from spring through mid-fall and close for the winter.
Peak demand runs from late June through Labor Day, when creek tubing, the diamond mines, and family programming are all active. Holiday weekends fill first. West Canada Creek Campground marks Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day weekends as holiday periods with stricter cancellation terms.
Shoulder seasons have their own appeal. Fall brings foliage color, and spring aligns with trout season along the creek. Snow in the area usually begins around October and ends by April, with total annual snowfall averaging roughly four feet at Utica. RV travelers should plan winterization accordingly, and confirm operating dates directly with each campground before booking a late-October or April trip.

We had such a wonderful experience renting this RV! The owner was absolutely fantastic—so kind, accommodating, and incredibly flexible throughout the entire process. Communication was seamless, he was always quick to respond, and he went above and beyond to make everything easy and stress-free. The RV itself was spotless, in pristine condition, and clearly very well cared for. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and would absolutely rent from him again. Highly recommend!

We had an outstanding experience with this camper trailer rental in the Adirondacks last week. The unit was delivered right on time and was amazingly clean—everything inside was spotless and ready to go. It came fully equipped with everything we needed, so we didn’t have to scramble for any essentials. The host, Alex, was very friendly, professional, and informative. They took the time to walk us through the camper, answer all our questions, and make sure we felt comfortable before heading out. That personal touch really set the rental apart. We based ourselves near Long Lake and loved exploring the area. Highlights included grabbing ice cream at Hoss’s, catching some World Cup action at the Long Lake Diner and Owl’s Head Pub, and just soaking in the quiet lakes and mountain views. The Adirondacks never disappoint—peaceful mornings on the water and scenic drives through the woods made for some of our favorite moments. Overall, this was an easy, stress-free rental experience. Clean unit, reliable delivery, and genuinely helpful hosts. We’d happily rent from them again. Highly recommended!

Booking and reservations
Campgrounds around Frankfort are privately operated, so there is no single statewide reservation portal to use. Each property runs its own booking system directly through its website or through third-party platforms such as Campspot and KOA.com. Reserving early is important for July and August weekends and for any holiday period.
Written cancellation is required at West Canada Creek Campground, with charges of one night for short stays and two nights for weekly-plus stays if cancelled ten or more days out, no refunds within ten days or for holidays, and travel insurance recommended. At the Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort, guests who do not arrive and do not notify the campground are charged for the full stay.
Read each campground's specific cancellation window before you book, and note that creek-front sites at both the KOA and West Canada Creek Campground are typically the first to sell out.
What to expect on site
Sites in this corridor range from resort-style with heavy amenities to simpler creek-side setups. At Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort, Creekside pull-in RV sites offer water, 50-amp electric, and sewer hookups, with picnic tables and fire rings along West Canada Creek. Big-rig-friendly sites accommodating units up to 80 feet are also available.
West Canada Creek Campground offers full-hookup RV sites, tent sites, and cabins, with restrooms and showers, a camp store, laundry, a swimming pool, playground, beach volleyball court, and horseshoe pits. Sites tend to be narrow but relatively level, with both gravel and grass options.
The KOA and most local campgrounds are pet-friendly, and dogs must be kept on leashes no longer than six feet when outside vehicles or rental units. Expect strong family programming, on-site food, and quick access to Route 28 for supply runs into Herkimer or Utica.
