July and August bring warm days, occasional afternoon thunderstorms, and the fullest event calendars at family resorts. Foliage color usually peaks in the first half of October, and many parks host Halloween-themed closing weekends before shutting down for winter. From November through March, expect freezing temperatures, lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, and closed private campgrounds. Firewood is usually sold on site, and moving outside firewood into New York campgrounds is restricted under state invasive-species rules. Summer bugs are typical of the Great Lakes region: mosquitoes near creeks and low-lying sites, plus black flies in late spring. Pack layers even in July, since evenings can cool into the 50s Fahrenheit.
