Campgrounds and RV parks near Mayfield, NY

Water activities dominate the summer schedule. Great Sacandaga Lake supports swimming, boating, and fishing, and public boat launches at Northampton Beach, Northville, Broadalbin, and the Town of Day open the lake to trailered boats. Anglers target walleye, northern pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass, brown and rainbow trout, and panfish, all managed by the NYS DEC. On land, the southern Adirondack foothills offer hiking, mountain biking, and quiet paddling on smaller lakes near Caroga. The Northville-Placid Trail begins in Northville, giving RVers based at Pine Lake Campground and RV Park or Royal Mountain Campground quick access to trailheads. Cooler months bring ice fishing and snowmobiling, though most private RV parks close for the season.

The Mayfield RV season is short and defined by Adirondack weather. Most developed campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, typically from mid-May through September or October, and many close during winter months due to harsh Adirondack conditions. Northampton Beach State Campground, the DEC facility on Great Sacandaga Lake at Mayfield, generally opens in mid-May and closes in mid-October, while nearby Caroga Lake Campground follows a shorter mid-May to early-September window. July and August are peak. Weekends around the lake fill quickly, and campgrounds with lake frontage sell out first. June brings milder crowds but also the highest bug pressure, especially blackflies in wooded sites. September delivers cool nights, fewer insects, and early fall colour in the foothills. Shoulder-season RVers should confirm water and dump-station availability, since some parks winterize systems before their published closing date. New York restricts firewood transport: untreated firewood may not be moved more than 50 miles from its source, and only kiln-dried wood labelled to state heat-treatment standards is exempt.

Mayfield is a small lakeside town, not a resort hub. Grocery runs, fuel, and propane are handled in Mayfield village or a short drive south in Gloversville and Johnstown. Cell service is generally reliable near the lake but weakens on back roads into the foothills. Roads to the campgrounds are paved but narrow in places, with tight turns approaching Caroga Lake. Larger Class A rigs should confirm length limits and access notes with the campground before arrival. Wildlife is common: black bears range through the southern Adirondacks, so food should be stored inside the RV overnight. Mosquitoes and blackflies are heaviest from late May through June, and lake water temperatures stay cool into early summer before warming for prime swimming in July and August.
