Campgrounds near Mohawk, New York
Mohawk is a small village in Herkimer County in New York's Mohawk Valley, positioned between the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains and close to the historic Erie Canal corridor. RV travelers use it as a base for the Herkimer Diamond Mines, West Canada Creek, and day trips to Cooperstown and Utica. Interstate 90 (the New York State Thruway) runs just north of town, making rig access straightforward from Albany or Syracuse.
The closest full-service RV park is Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort, set in the Mohawk Valley along West Canada Creek and located just miles from the historic Mohawk River and Erie Canal. It is also marketed as Herkimer Diamond KOA Resort and sits directly next to the mining attraction on NY-28.
West of Mohawk toward Cooperstown, options include Cooperstown KOA Journey, Scenic View Campground, and Cooperstown Deer Run Campground. Cooperstown KOA Journey is a pet-friendly place in the foothills of the Adirondacks, giving RV renters a second cluster of sites within easy reach of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Things to do near Mohawk
The signature activity is mining at the Herkimer Diamond Mines, where visitors sift for world famous Herkimer Diamonds at the above ground mining attraction, quartz crystals that were faceted by nature half a billion years ago, and keep whatever they find. The attraction sits next to the KOA, so families can walk between campsite and quarry.
On the water, the West Canada Creek offers trout fishing and fun for canoeists, tubers and kayakers alike. The Erie Canalway Trail follows the Mohawk River for cycling and walking.
Cooperstown, about 40 minutes south, anchors the region's museum circuit: the National Baseball Hall of Fame, The Farmers' Museum, and the Fenimore Art Museum. Otsego and Canadarago lakes are a quick car ride away for fishing and boating.

The main RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day and into leaf-peeping in early October. Cooperstown KOA Journey runs its heated pool, Camp K9, video game room, and Saturday activities for all ages between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and most private parks in the area follow a similar late-spring to mid-fall operating window.
Summer is peak. Cooperstown fills fast during Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Weekend in late July, Cooperstown Dreams Park youth baseball weeks, and the Glimmerglass Festival for theater and opera in July and August. Sites within 30 minutes of Cooperstown often book months ahead for these dates.
Summers in the Herkimer area are warm, wet, and partly cloudy and winters are freezing, snowy, and mostly cloudy. Precipitation is relatively well-distributed throughout the year, with afternoon thunderstorms common June through August. Winter camping is limited: expect snow, ice, and most private campgrounds closed from late October through April.

We had such a wonderful experience renting this RV! The owner was absolutely fantastic—so kind, accommodating, and incredibly flexible throughout the entire process. Communication was seamless, he was always quick to respond, and he went above and beyond to make everything easy and stress-free. The RV itself was spotless, in pristine condition, and clearly very well cared for. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and would absolutely rent from him again. Highly recommend!

We had an outstanding experience with this camper trailer rental in the Adirondacks last week. The unit was delivered right on time and was amazingly clean—everything inside was spotless and ready to go. It came fully equipped with everything we needed, so we didn’t have to scramble for any essentials. The host, Alex, was very friendly, professional, and informative. They took the time to walk us through the camper, answer all our questions, and make sure we felt comfortable before heading out. That personal touch really set the rental apart. We based ourselves near Long Lake and loved exploring the area. Highlights included grabbing ice cream at Hoss’s, catching some World Cup action at the Long Lake Diner and Owl’s Head Pub, and just soaking in the quiet lakes and mountain views. The Adirondacks never disappoint—peaceful mornings on the water and scenic drives through the woods made for some of our favorite moments. Overall, this was an easy, stress-free rental experience. Clean unit, reliable delivery, and genuinely helpful hosts. We’d happily rent from them again. Highly recommended!

How to book an RV site
Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort and Cooperstown KOA Journey both use the KOA reservation system online or by phone, and KOA Rewards members save 10% at check-out. Scenic View Campground and Cooperstown Deer Run Campground are independent parks that take reservations directly by phone or their own websites.
For summer weekends, book as early as possible. Hall of Fame Weekend, Dreams Park weeks, and July 4 sell out first. Late arrivals at Cooperstown KOA with an existing reservation can find their site map in a lit night registration box to the left of the front doors; walk-ins after hours use a one-night overnight check-in envelope and finish check-in the next morning.
Check cancellation windows at booking. Deposits are typical, and holiday weekends often require longer minimum stays.
What to expect on-site
Sites in the Mohawk Valley skew family-oriented. At Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort, guests get outdoor recreation like Gaga Ball, volleyball, basketball, horseshoes, bean bag toss, and giant chess, plus a diamond-shaped swimming pool and West Canada Creek tubing or kayaking. Full-hookup pull-through sites accommodate larger rigs, and the park lists a 100-foot maximum length and 50 max amp service.
Cooperstown KOA Journey offers long, level RV sites, a heated pool, KampK9, and free fiber optic Wi-Fi, and its layout suits easy in and out even for 45-foot coaches. Independent parks nearby generally provide water, electric, and dump service, with fewer resort-style extras.
Expect wooded or open-field sites, gravel pads, campfire rings, and rural cell coverage that varies by carrier. Bring bug spray from June through August.

experienceherkimercounty.com/What license do I need to rent an RV in Mohawk, New York?
Good news: a standard Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mohawk and drive almost anywhere in New York State. The vast majority of RVs on RVezy, including campervans, travel trailers, and Class C motorhomes, fall well under the 26,000 pound Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) threshold where New York requires an R endorsement. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license. That's it, you're ready to hit Route 5S and start your Mohawk Valley adventure.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-licenses/get-driver-licenseIs my RV rental in Mohawk, NY covered if something goes wrong?

Protection plans cover qualifying damage to the RV and provide meaningful financial protection during your trip. At checkout you choose the protection level that fits your comfort, it is selected by the renter, not the host. Roadside assistance is bundled in, so a flat tire on Route 28 toward Old Forge or a dead battery near Herkimer Diamond Mines is just a phone call away. Book confidently and focus on the fun.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Mohawk, NY RV rental?
Booking your Mohawk RV trip is low risk thanks to RVezy's standard cancellation policy, which applies platform-wide rather than being set by individual hosts. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start, and special provisions can apply for qualifying events. Because the policy is consistent across listings, you do not need to compare different cancellation rules the way you would on other sites. Upstate New York weather can shift quickly in shoulder seasons, so it is reassuring to know the process is clear. Contact RVezy support if you ever need help walking through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Mohawk?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Mohawk is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) on board. New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds generally allow pets at campsites with proof of current rabies vaccination, which opens up nearby options like Glimmerglass State Park near Cooperstown and Pixley Falls State Park. The Mohawk River trail running through the village toward Fort Herkimer is a great on-leash walk for stretching paws. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or size guidelines so check-in is smooth.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Mohawk, NY?
Yes, RV delivery in Mohawk is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip towing or driving a big rig. Many local hosts will drop the RV at popular spots like Herkimer Diamond KOA Resort on Route 28, Caroga Lake Campground, or even your private driveway in Ilion, Herkimer, or Little Falls. They will level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically distance-based, so closer drop-offs cost less. Filter by Delivery on the search page and message the host with your destination to lock in a quote.

thruway.ny.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Mohawk, NY for my RV?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Mohawk. For state-run sites, reservations open up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, so book early for July and August weekends. Pro tip: midweek stays at DEC campgrounds in the Adirondacks are noticeably easier to score.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time to visit Mohawk, NY in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for a Mohawk RV trip, with each season offering something different. Summer (June through August) brings warm days averaging 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect for Erie Canal cruises and tubing on West Canada Creek. Early fall (mid-September to mid-October) is arguably the best time, with crisp 50 to 65 degree days and Adirondack foliage exploding into color, peaking in late September north of Mohawk. Spring can be muddy and buggy, while winter brings serious snow and many campgrounds close. Pro tip: book your RV for the week after Labor Day to enjoy summer warmth, fewer crowds, and easier campsite reservations across Herkimer County.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Mohawk?
Definitely, first time renting an RV in Mohawk is genuinely beginner-friendly, and RVezy hosts make it that way. Every host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking through the generator, awning, water systems, slide-outs, and how to dump tanks. You can also message them anytime during your trip with questions. The roads around Mohawk are forgiving for new drivers: Route 5S along the Mohawk River, Route 28 toward Cooperstown, and I-90 are wide, well-maintained, and not packed with city traffic. If you'd rather not drive at all, choose a host who delivers and sets up. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C or campervan rental in Mohawk for your first trip, they handle a lot like a large van.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhat if my RV breaks down during my Mohawk, NY trip?
You are covered, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is one call away whether you are on the Thruway near Utica or deep in the Adirondacks past Old Forge. Roadside service handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a great first call for quirks specific to their RV, like resetting the inverter or restarting the fridge. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if you need extra help. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before you pull out of the driveway in Mohawk.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Mohawk, NY rental RV across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, RV road trips from Mohawk into other U.S. states are common and straightforward, Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire are all within a day's drive. Cross-border travel into Canada (Ontario or Quebec via the Thousand Islands Bridge, about 2.5 hours north) is sometimes allowed depending on the host's insurance and approval, so message before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance doesn't extend there. For Canada trips, bring a passport, proof of rental authorization from the host, and your protection package documentation. Pro tip: Niagara Falls makes an unforgettable two-day add-on to your Mohawk RV trip with an easy border crossing.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much will fuel cost on my Mohawk, NY RV trip?
Budgeting for fuel is easier than you'd think in the Mohawk Valley. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class A coaches average 7 to 9 mpg, and campervans can hit 15 to 20 mpg. Gas prices in Herkimer County tend to run a bit below New York State averages, with stations along Route 5S and the Thruway exits in Herkimer, Ilion, and Little Falls competitive on diesel and regular. For a typical 300-mile loop from Mohawk to Old Forge and back, expect roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up before heading deep into the Adirondacks, prices climb noticeably once you pass Inlet and Raquette Lake.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Mohawk, NY?
For the best campgrounds near Mohawk, book as early as you can. New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds open reservations up to nine months in advance through the ReserveAmerica system. Popular Adirondack campgrounds like Nick's Lake, Limekiln Lake, and Fish Creek Pond can fill within minutes for July and August weekends. Private campgrounds like Herkimer Diamond KOA generally need three to four months of lead time for summer Saturdays. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Thursday) at state-run sites often have availability even a week out, perfect for a spontaneous family RV trip Mohawk-style.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Mohawk, NY?
Driving an RV around Mohawk is genuinely pleasant most of the year. The village sits near Exit 30 of the New York State Thruway (I-90), with Route 5S as the main local artery running east-west along the Mohawk River. Roads are wide, well-graded, and far less crowded than downstate. Heading north on Route 28 toward Old Forge takes you through rolling Adirondack foothills with a few moderate grades but no white-knuckle passes. The biggest seasonal hazard is winter, when November through March can bring heavy snow, so most renters stick to April through October. Pro tip: watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural stretches near Jordanville and Newport.

Campgrounds around Mohawk range from full-service resorts to rustic Adirondack sites, so you can match your comfort level. Herkimer Diamond KOA Resort offers full hookups (30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer), hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a pool. State-run campgrounds like Nick's Lake and Caroga Lake typically have no hookups at the site but provide central water spigots, dump stations, flush toilets, and hot showers. Wondering where to park an RV in Mohawk for a quick stay? Look for dump stations at Herkimer Diamond KOA and most state parks. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before heading into DEC campgrounds in the Adirondacks since individual sites are typically water-free.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhat will the inside of my Mohawk, NY rental RV be like?

Expect a real bed (or two) often with linens, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via AC and furnace, dinette seating with seatbelts for travel, and exterior storage for chairs and gear. Many listings include extras like awnings with LED lights, TVs, Wi-Fi hotspots, or onboard generators for boondocking. Browse photos and the amenities checklist on each listing carefully, and use host reviews to confirm condition. Pro tip: ask the host about cold-weather prep if your trip extends into October, Adirondack nights drop into the 30s quickly.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mohawk,%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Mohawk RV rental?
Payment for your RV rental in Mohawk is handled securely through RVezy at checkout, no cash is exchanged with the host, and your card is processed through the platform's protected system. A separate refundable security deposit is held by RVezy and released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid deposit issues, take dated photos at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if that is your responsibility per the listing. Pro tip: review the host's mileage, fuel, and cleaning policy before signing the trip agreement so there are zero surprises.
