Campgrounds near New Hartford, New York
New Hartford sits in Oneida County just south of Utica in central New York, within easy reach of the western Adirondack foothills, the Mohawk Valley, and the Erie Canal corridor. RV renters use it as a base for lake camping, state park stays, and river trips, with most nearby campgrounds clustered within a 30 to 60 minute drive.
The closest options run from small private parks to a large state facility. Delta Lake State Park is located on a peninsula extending into Delta Reservoir, and the terrain is wooded and generally flat. The state park campground has 101 tent, trailer, and RV camping sites to choose from, 50 of which offer electric hookups. Lake Chalet Motel and Campground and Scenic View Campground provide smaller, private alternatives closer to the Utica area, while West Canada Creek Campground sits farther east near the trout stream of the same name.
Cider House Campground rounds out the local mix for travelers who want a quieter, rural setting. Together these properties give RV renters a spread of shoreline, riverside, and countryside choices without a long haul from the New Hartford exits off the New York State Thruway.
Things to do near New Hartford
Water recreation drives most trips. A boat launch, plus shoreline fishing for trout, pike, bass, bullhead and perch, make Delta Lake State Park popular with anglers, and a sandy beach with swimming in the summer and cross-country ski trails in the winter make this park a year-round outdoor destination. West Canada Creek is a well-known regional trout stream and paddling run.
On land, families can hit the Erie Canalway Trail, tour the Fort Stanwix National Monument in Rome, visit the Utica Zoo, or drive north into the Adirondack Park for day hikes. Visitors can enjoy the day in one of many picnic areas or spend time exploring the park's miles of hiking and nature trails.
In winter, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing take over at the state park and surrounding public land.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, when the beach is staffed and every loop tends to fill on Fridays and Saturdays. The park has a sandy beach that is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, and lifeguards are posted here during the summer. Private campgrounds in the area typically open in April or May and close in October.
Early fall is a strong window for RV renters. Foliage in central New York generally peaks from late September into mid-October, temperatures cool, and reservations are easier to secure midweek.
Winter closes most overnight camping. While the campground is closed to overnight camping during the winter months, the park's groomed nature trails provide the opportunity to explore a range of winter sports, including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario regularly reaches the Utica area, so shoulder-season travelers should watch forecasts closely.

We had such a wonderful experience renting this RV! The owner was absolutely fantastic—so kind, accommodating, and incredibly flexible throughout the entire process. Communication was seamless, he was always quick to respond, and he went above and beyond to make everything easy and stress-free. The RV itself was spotless, in pristine condition, and clearly very well cared for. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and would absolutely rent from him again. Highly recommend!

We had an outstanding experience with this camper trailer rental in the Adirondacks last week. The unit was delivered right on time and was amazingly clean—everything inside was spotless and ready to go. It came fully equipped with everything we needed, so we didn’t have to scramble for any essentials. The host, Alex, was very friendly, professional, and informative. They took the time to walk us through the camper, answer all our questions, and make sure we felt comfortable before heading out. That personal touch really set the rental apart. We based ourselves near Long Lake and loved exploring the area. Highlights included grabbing ice cream at Hoss’s, catching some World Cup action at the Long Lake Diner and Owl’s Head Pub, and just soaking in the quiet lakes and mountain views. The Adirondacks never disappoint—peaceful mornings on the water and scenic drives through the woods made for some of our favorite moments. Overall, this was an easy, stress-free rental experience. Clean unit, reliable delivery, and genuinely helpful hosts. We’d happily rent from them again. Highly recommended!

How to book campgrounds near New Hartford
New York State Parks, including Delta Lake State Park, take reservations online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival, and this applies to campsites only.
For summer weekends and holidays, book the state park as soon as the 9-month window opens. Private campgrounds such as Lake Chalet Motel and Campground, Scenic View Campground, West Canada Creek Campground, and Cider House Campground handle reservations directly by phone or through their own websites, and often accept shorter stays than the state park.
RV renters should confirm site length, hookup type, and any big-rig restrictions before booking, since older loops in the region were built for smaller trailers.
What to expect on-site
Expect wooded, generally flat sites in this part of central New York. Delta Lake State Park is located on a peninsula extending into Delta Reservoir, and the terrain is wooded and generally flat. Each site comes equipped with a fire ring and a six-foot table, and other amenities include showers as well as comfort, dump, and water fill-up stations.
State park rules cover occupancy and vehicles. A maximum of two pets are allowed in campsites and day use areas unless prohibited by sign or directive. Current proof of rabies inoculation is required at check-in for pets, and quiet hours are enforced at night to protect the family atmosphere.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near New Hartford and Rome but weakens as sites move toward the Adirondack foothills.

Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats too). Once you're on the road, your pup has options: Delta Lake State Park in nearby Rome allows leashed pets at most campsites, Verona Beach State Park has a designated pet area, and the Sherrillbrook Park trails right in New Hartford are a great morning stretch before you hit the road. Many local hosts also leave a welcome note with pet-friendly hiking suggestions in the Adirondack foothills. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and to share your dog's size, which helps them recommend the best sites for your family RV trip in New Hartford.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in New Hartford?
Yes, RV delivery in New Hartford is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite, vacation rental, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through everything from the propane stove to the awning. Common delivery destinations include Delta Lake State Park, The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone in Verona, and Herkimer Diamond KOA. Delivery fees are usually based on distance from the host's location and are shown on the listing. Pro tip: use the Delivery filter when you search, then message a couple of hosts to compare drop-off windows so your New Hartford RV trip starts stress-free.

You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in New Hartford. Top picks within an hour's drive include: Delta Lake State Park in Rome (about 20 miles north, with waterfront electric sites and a sandy swim beach), The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone Resort in Verona (about 25 miles west, paved full-hookup sites with casino shuttle), Herkimer Diamond KOA in Herkimer (about 18 miles east, where you can actually mine for quartz crystals), Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville (about 50 miles west, famous for its glacier-formed blue-green lakes), and Glimmerglass State Park near Cooperstown (about 40 miles south on Otsego Lake). Pro tip: New York State Parks open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and Delta Lake waterfront sites go fast for summer weekends.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time to visit New Hartford in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping in New Hartford runs from late May through mid-October, with each season offering something different. Summer (June through August) brings warm days in the upper 70s to mid-80s and comfortable 60-degree nights, perfect for swimming at Delta Lake or kayaking the Erie Canal. Early fall (mid-September through mid-October) is the local insider favorite: daytime highs in the 60s, crisp nights, and explosive foliage across the Adirondack foothills and the Mohawk Valley. May and late October are quieter and cheaper, but pack layers because nights can dip into the 30s. Most state park campgrounds operate seasonally and close by late October due to Central New York's cold, snowy winters. Pro tip: book a foliage-week RV rental in New Hartford by early August to lock in the best motorhomes.
weather.gov/bgm/What if I've never driven an RV before?
You'll be in great hands. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery) covering driving tips, hookups, slide-outs, propane, the generator, water systems, and dump procedures, so first-time renters in New Hartford never feel left to figure it out alone. Around New Hartford specifically, driving is very approachable: Routes 5, 8, and 12 are wide and well-maintained, and the New York State Thruway (I-90) just north of town is flat and straight, an ideal place to get comfortable behind the wheel. For your first day, pick a closer destination like Delta Lake State Park (about 25 minutes away) rather than a 4-hour haul. Pro tip: message your host before booking with any questions, even basic ones, they love helping first-timers succeed.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-manuals-and-practice-testsWhat happens if I break down during my New Hartford RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you blow a tire on I-90 near Verona, get a dead battery at Glimmerglass State Park, or need a tow off Route 28 in the southern Adirondacks, help is one call away. The roadside team coordinates tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also a quick message away through the RVezy app for anything RV-specific, like resetting the inverter or troubleshooting the awning. Pro tip: before you leave New Hartford, snap a quick photo of the RV's tire info and save the roadside assistance number to your phone so you're ready for anything.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from New Hartford, NY?
New Hartford is an incredible launchpad for an RV road trip. A few favorites: the Cooperstown loop (35 miles south to the Baseball Hall of Fame and Glimmerglass State Park, perfect for a long weekend), the Adirondack Park route (head north on Route 28 about 90 miles to Old Forge and Inlet for paddling and hiking), the Finger Lakes wine country trip (about 90 miles west via the Thruway to Skaneateles and Seneca Lake), the Niagara Falls run (around 220 miles west on I-90), and the Thousand Islands escape (110 miles north up I-81 to Alexandria Bay). Cross-border note: traveling into Canada is possible on some listings, message the host first to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: pair the Adirondacks with Lake Placid for a stunning 5-day itinerary.
iloveny.com/places-to-go/adirondacks/What's the fuel budget for an RV trip from New Hartford?
Easy to plan for. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for a campervan, and 12 to 18 mpg combined for a truck towing a travel trailer. Gas prices in the New Hartford and Utica area typically run a few cents below the New York state average, with stations along Commercial Drive and on Genesee Street offering the easiest big-rig access. For a 300-mile round trip to Lake George and back in a Class C at roughly $3.50 to $3.80 per gallon, plan on about $110 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before heading into the Adirondacks on Route 28, where stations get sparse north of Old Forge and prices climb. The GasBuddy app pairs perfectly with any New Hartford RV trip.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near New Hartford?
Here's the timing that works: New York State Park campgrounds like Delta Lake, Verona Beach, Green Lakes, and Glimmerglass open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and the most popular waterfront sites book up within minutes for summer weekends and foliage weeks. For most other weekends, 2 to 3 months out is usually fine. Private parks like The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone and Herkimer Diamond KOA generally have more flexibility, though Cooperstown-area campgrounds fill fast in summer during youth baseball tournament season. Pro tip for your New Hartford RV trip: book your campground first, then your RVezy rental, since dates are easier to flex on the rental side.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around New Hartford?
Driving an RV around New Hartford is genuinely manageable. The town sits near the junction of Routes 5, 8, and 12, all wide, well-maintained roads, and the New York State Thruway (I-90) is just minutes north with easy on/off ramps near Utica and Westmoreland. Watch for two things: lake-effect snow can hit hard from November through March (another reason summer and fall are prime RV season here), and heavy rain occasionally causes pooling on lower stretches of Route 5 along the Mohawk River. Heading into the Adirondacks on Route 28, expect a winding two-lane road with elevation changes, take it slow and use lower gears on descents. Pro tip: check 511NY before you roll out for real-time road conditions, construction, and weather alerts.
511ny.org/What hookups and amenities do New Hartford area campgrounds offer?
You'll have great options. Most campgrounds within an hour of New Hartford offer at least 30-amp electric and water, and many also offer 50-amp service and full sewer hookups. Delta Lake State Park has electric sites plus a centralized dump station and potable water fill. The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone offers paved full-hookup sites with 30/50-amp, water, and sewer at every site. Herkimer Diamond KOA has full hookups plus a pool and laundry. Most New York State Parks include hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station, but no sewer at individual sites. Pro tip: confirm amp service when you book so your RV's air conditioning runs smoothly during summer heat.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's included inside a typical RV rental in New Hartford?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome and campervan rentals in New Hartford come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 4 to 8 depending on the model, a furnace and air conditioning, fresh/grey/black water tanks, and seatbelts for every passenger riding while driving. Many also include a generator, TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi is usually bring-your-own (a hotspot or your phone works well), as Verizon and AT&T have strong coverage across Oneida County and most of the Mohawk Valley. Each RVezy listing has a detailed amenities checklist, so you can match the rig to your trip. Pro tip: filter by the amenities that matter most to your family before comparing listings.
