Lake Champlain drives most of the recreation. Cumberland Bay State Park offers a large natural sand beach, picnic grounds, a playground, and playing fields on the west shore of the lake, and its waterfront is a common day-trip destination for families camping in the area. Fishing, kayaking, and swimming are the summer staples along the shoreline. Ausable Chasm, often called the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks, is the marquee inland attraction. AuSable Chasm Campground guests have access to a swimming pool, playgrounds, disc golf, and more than fifteen miles of mountain biking trails. Inland, Macomb Reservation State Park allows swimming in Davis Pond, non-motorized boating, fishing in the pond or the Salmon River, plus a self-guided nature trail and hiking trail. Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid are within reach for day trips.

Late June and early September are quieter alternatives with reliable weather. Winter shuts down developed camping, but the parks stay active. Winter activities at Macomb Reservation include ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, and the Plattsburgh lakeshore is a popular ice-fishing area.

Sites in this region range from full-hookup RV pads to rustic wooded pull-ins. At Cumberland Bay, the 300 Loop has twenty electric hookup sites that book quickly, while other loops are non-electric back-in sites with pad lengths ranging from 20 to 50 feet. Some campsites at Macomb Reservation are quite wooded and the gravel access roads can be narrow for larger RVs, so it is worth confirming site suitability before arrival. Expect standard state-park amenities: showers, flush toilets, dump stations, and picnic tables with fire rings. Firewood must be sourced from within a 50-mile radius of the campground, so plan on buying locally rather than hauling wood from home. Pets are welcome at most parks on a six-foot leash but are not permitted on beaches or picnic areas. Bugs, especially blackflies in late spring and mosquitoes in summer, are a real consideration near the water and woods.
