Campgrounds near Plattsburgh
Plattsburgh sits on the western shore of Lake Champlain in New York's Adirondack Coast region, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border. The city serves as a practical staging point for RV trips between Montreal, Burlington, and Lake Placid, and the surrounding Clinton County offers a mix of state park and private campgrounds within a short drive of Interstate 87.
Cumberland Bay State Park, on the Cumberland Head peninsula, is the closest publicly operated campground and anchors the local camping scene with a large natural sand beach on Lake Champlain. Private options in and around the city include Plattsburgh RV Park, Shady Oaks RV Park, Shady Oaks Camping Resort, and the adults-only Champlain Adult Campground for travelers seeking a quieter setting.
Most sites in the area cater to trailers and motorhomes with back-in configurations, and the region's flat lakeshore terrain makes access straightforward for larger rigs. Point Au Roche State Park and Ausable Point sit within a short drive for day trips or overflow options when Plattsburgh-area sites fill.
Things to do near Plattsburgh
Lake Champlain drives most of the recreation. Swimming, boating, kayaking, and bass fishing are the main draws, and the sand beach at Cumberland Bay State Park is a common family stop. Boat launches are available at Point Au Roche State Park and along the Plattsburgh waterfront.
Ausable Chasm, about 12 miles south, offers hiking, rafting, tubing, and a via ferrata adventure route through a sandstone gorge. Point Au Roche State Park has easy shoreline trails with Lake Champlain views, and cross-country runners frequent Cumberland Bay in the fall.
History-minded travelers can explore Battle of Plattsburgh sites from the War of 1812 and the Kent-Delord House Museum. The Lakes to Locks Passage scenic byway follows the shoreline south, connecting wineries, farm stands, and historic sites.

The Plattsburgh camping season is short and clearly defined. At Cumberland Bay State Park, the main camping loops typically run from mid-May through mid-October, with a shorter loop operating from late May through early September. Most private campgrounds around the city follow a similar May-through-October window, and few operate year-round because winters are long and snowy.
July and August are peak season. Warm lake temperatures, festivals such as the Mayor's Cup Regatta, and summer bass tournaments push occupancy to its highest levels, and waterfront sites at Cumberland Bay book out well in advance. June brings the most rainfall of any month, so travelers should plan for wet days early in the season.
September and early October are quieter, with cooler nights, fall foliage across the Adirondack Coast, and easier same-week bookings. By November, most facilities have closed for the winter and lakeside temperatures drop below freezing.
How to book a campsite near Plattsburgh
Cumberland Bay State Park is reserved through ReserveAmerica, the booking system used by all New York State Parks. Reservations open up to nine months in advance, must be made at least seven days ahead for standard bookings, and same-day reservations are accepted online until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-in campsites are permitted but not guaranteed during peak weeks.
Electric hookup sites in the 300 Loop at Cumberland Bay fill quickly once the window opens, so setting a calendar reminder for the nine-month mark is worthwhile for summer weekends. The maximum continuous stay is 14 nights.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Plattsburgh RV Park, Shady Oaks RV Park, Shady Oaks Camping Resort, and Champlain Adult Campground, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends and mid-July through mid-August require the most lead time.
What to expect
Sites around Plattsburgh tend to be grassy and open, with varying amounts of shade. At Cumberland Bay State Park, most loops are non-electric with back-in pads ranging roughly from 20 to 50 feet, and a smaller electric loop is available. Facilities include free showers, laundry, a dump station, and a convenience store on site.
Expect a family-oriented atmosphere at the state park, with a playground, playing fields, and a lifeguarded beach when staffing allows. A maximum of two pets are allowed per site on a leash no longer than six feet, and pets are not permitted on the beach. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Cell coverage in and around Plattsburgh is generally reliable given the proximity to town. Mosquitoes and black flies can be active near the lakeshore in early summer, so bring repellent. Current proof of rabies inoculation is required at state park check-in for pets.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Plattsburgh, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Plattsburgh, NY?
RV rental in Plattsburgh is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain region. Travel trailers typically start around $80 to $150 per night, while Class C motorhomes generally run $175 to $300 per night, depending on size, season, and age. Summer (July and August) is peak pricing because of Canadian travelers and lake season, so booking a cheap RV rental in Plattsburgh is easiest in late May, early June, or September. Filter for travel trailers with delivery included to skip towing entirely and often save versus a drivable motorhome. Mid-week pickups also unlock better rates from many local hosts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plattsburgh%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Plattsburgh?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Plattsburgh, NY. New York does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, including Class A motorhomes, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and campervans listed on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside North America? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before you fly in. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the verification step wraps up, often the same day.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance included for trips around Plattsburgh?
Every RVezy booking in Plattsburgh comes with a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you're covered from the moment you pull off I-87. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the vehicle and gives you peace of mind whether you're winding through the Adirondacks or rolling along the Lake Champlain shoreline. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can dial it up for extra reassurance on your first time renting an RV in Plattsburgh. Should anything happen, RVezy support is one call away, before, during, and after your trip. That safety net is a big reason families pick RVezy for a Plattsburgh RV trip.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Plattsburgh RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. If life happens, weather changes, a family emergency, or a natural disaster, RVezy support is there to help you sort it out fairly. Because the refund amount depends on how close you are to your trip start date, review the cancellation details on the RVezy Help Center before you book. The bottom line: you don't have to commit blindly to your RV rental in Plattsburgh, NY. Reserve your dates now to secure summer availability, then plan with peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Plattsburgh RV trip?
Absolutely, and a pet-friendly RV rental in Plattsburgh is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see every local host who welcomes dogs (and sometimes cats). From there, head to dog-loving spots like Point Au Roche State Park on Lake Champlain, the Saranac River Trail Greenway, or Plattsburgh City Beach. Most area campgrounds, including Plattsburgh RV Park and Shady Oaks, are pet-welcoming with leash rules. Message the host before booking to mention your pup's size and breed, many will share their favorite local trails. It's one of the easiest road trip companions you'll ever bring.
parks.ny.gov/parks/pointaurochestateparkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Plattsburgh?
Yes, RV delivery in Plattsburgh is widely available and a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow and set up the rig at popular spots like Plattsburgh RV Park on Route 9, Cumberland Bay State Park, or Ausable Pines in nearby Peru, so you skip driving altogether. The host levels it, hooks up water and electric, walks you through every system, and comes back to retrieve it at the end of your trip. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, plus their delivery radius and fee. Delivered travel trailers are perfect for families who want to fly into Plattsburgh International Airport (PBG) and start camping the same day.
parks.ny.gov/parks/cumberlandbayHow many miles can I drive on my Plattsburgh RV rental?
Plenty, and several Plattsburgh hosts offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal if you're planning to roam. Most listings include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small per-mile fee beyond that, but unlimited-mileage options exist for longer Adirondack loops. For perspective, Lake Placid is about 50 miles west, Burlington, VT is roughly 25 miles east via the Lake Champlain ferry, Montreal is about 65 miles north, and Lake George is around 100 miles south. If you're planning an RV road trip from Plattsburgh through the High Peaks region, filter for unlimited mileage upfront and you'll save mental math at every gas stop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plattsburgh%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Plattsburgh for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Plattsburgh. Top picks include Plattsburgh RV Park (Route 9, full-hookup sites, heated pool, close to Lake Champlain beaches), Cumberland Bay State Park (lakefront sites right in the city), Ausable Pines Campground & RV Park in Peru (cement patios, boat dock access), Shady Oaks RV Park (quiet acres with a lake breeze), and Macomb Reservation State Park (forested sites near Schuyler Falls). For bigger adventures, Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA in Wilmington is about 50 minutes away. New York's state park sites can be reserved through ReserveAmerica up to nine months in advance, and Cumberland Bay's lakeside loops book up fast for July.
parks.ny.gov/parks/cumberlandbay/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Plattsburgh?
The sweet spot for a Plattsburgh RV trip runs mid-May through late September, with July and August averaging highs around 79 to 81 F and warm Lake Champlain swimming. June can be beautiful but tends to be wetter, so pack a rain jacket. September is the local insider's pick: cooler nights in the 50s, fewer bugs, and the first hints of Adirondack fall color rolling across the High Peaks. Early October delivers postcard foliage but many campgrounds start closing for the season. If you want the lake-and-mountain combo without summer crowds, target the week after Labor Day, motorhome rental in Plattsburgh is often noticeably cheaper then too.
weather.gov/btv/I've never driven an RV before. How does pickup work in Plattsburgh?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every Plattsburgh host gives a full hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, propane, water, waste tanks, slide-outs, and the generator before you ever leave the driveway. They'll answer questions, share local tips (which gas stations have easy pull-throughs, which back roads to avoid), and many stay reachable by text throughout your trip. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery so the RV is set up and ready when you arrive. Stick with a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 28 feet for your first Adirondack outing, they handle Route 9 and the I-87 Northway with ease.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking in Plattsburgh includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the Adirondack Northway (I-87), a dead battery at Ausable Chasm, or a propane hiccup at Cumberland Bay is just a phone call away. Your host is also typically a text away for quick questions like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. For anything bigger, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip to coordinate repairs or replacements. Save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the driveway, you probably won't need it, but it's the fastest way back to your campfire.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Plattsburgh RV rental into Canada or Vermont?
Vermont is a yes, and Canada is often a yes too, with a quick step. Plattsburgh sits about 25 miles from Burlington, VT (via the Lake Champlain Ferry or I-89) and roughly 65 miles south of Montreal, so cross-border trips are popular. For Canada, message the host before booking to confirm they allow it and to request a cross-border insurance letter, this is standard and many Plattsburgh hosts do it regularly. Bring your passport (or NEXUS card) for the Champlain border crossing on I-87. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. A Plattsburgh-to-Montreal weekend with a stop in Old Quebec's RV-friendly parks is one of the most popular routes from the city.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripWhat should I budget for fuel on a Plattsburgh RV road trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but Plattsburgh is friendly on the wallet. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and a tow vehicle with a travel trailer 10 to 14 MPG. New York gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, so budget accordingly using current pump prices. A weekend loop from Plattsburgh to Lake Placid and back (about 110 miles round trip) in a Class C usually runs around $50 to $70 in fuel. Fill up just north of the city on Route 3 or in Champlain before heading into the Adirondacks, prices climb noticeably once you're inside the park.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Plattsburgh?
For summer weekends, book your campsite as soon as you book your RV. New York State Parks like Cumberland Bay and Macomb Reservation open reservations nine months ahead through ReserveAmerica, and prime lakefront sites for July and August fill up within hours of release. Private parks like Plattsburgh RV Park and Shady Oaks RV Park typically take reservations 6 to 12 months out and often have midweek openings even in peak season. Shoulder-season trips in May, June, and September are much easier, often bookable a week or two ahead. If your dream site is sold out, set a ReserveAmerica alert, last-minute cancellations on Lake Champlain are surprisingly common.
parks.ny.gov/reservations/What are the driving conditions like around Plattsburgh?
Driving in and around Plattsburgh is genuinely RV-friendly. The main artery is I-87 (the Adirondack Northway), a wide, well-maintained interstate that connects you to Lake George, Albany, and Montreal with little urban congestion. Route 9 hugs Lake Champlain and is a relaxed scenic drive. Take your time on the winding sections of Route 86 toward Lake Placid through the High Peaks, and on back roads during mud season (April). In winter, lake-effect snow squalls can roll off Lake Champlain quickly, so check 511NY before heading out. Confirm your specific rig's height clearance with the host at pickup so you can plan routes with confidence.
511ny.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Plattsburgh offer?
Most Plattsburgh-area campgrounds are full-service, which makes life easy. Plattsburgh RV Park, Shady Oaks, and Ausable Pines all offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. State parks like Cumberland Bay and Macomb Reservation typically offer electric and water hookups with centralized dump stations, but no sewer at the site. You'll find potable water fill stations at every major park, plus propane refills at Plattsburgh RV Park and several Route 9 gas stations. If you're boondocking around the Adirondacks, the dump station at Cumberland Bay State Park is open to non-campers for a small fee, super handy on the way home.
parks.ny.gov/parks/macombreservation/What's actually inside a typical RV rental in Plattsburgh?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Plattsburgh includes a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinettes (sleeping 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for every passenger while driving. Many also include a TV, outdoor speakers, awning, and onboard generator for off-grid power. Campervan rental in Plattsburgh tends to be more minimalist but loaded with clever storage, perfect for couples chasing Adirondack trailheads. Ask the host if linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are included, many Plattsburgh hosts toss them in free, while others offer them as low-cost add-ons so you can fly in light.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plattsburgh%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Plattsburgh RV rental?
Plattsburgh hosts are known for generous add-on menus. Common extras include delivery and setup (the RV arrives ready at your campground), generator hours, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards (perfect for Lake Champlain), camp chairs, outdoor grills, linen and kitchen packages, and pet cleaning fees. Most listings show daily mileage allowances of 100 to 150 miles, with reasonable per-mile fees beyond, or unlimited mileage options for longer Adirondack loops. Pickup is usually flexible between late morning and early evening, with drop-off the next morning. Bundling delivery, linens, and a kayak when you rent an RV in Plattsburgh turns a basic booking into a full lake vacation with zero trips to the store.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plattsburgh%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking with a credit or debit card, never cash to the host, and your total (nightly rate, fees, protection plan, taxes) is locked in upfront. A refundable security deposit is held shortly before your trip starts, separate from your booking payment, and the amount varies by RV. As long as you return the rig in the condition you got it, with the agreed fuel, propane, and waste tank levels, the deposit is released back to your card after the trip wraps. Snap a quick video walk-around at both pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to keep your Plattsburgh RV rental security deposit drama-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Plattsburgh during winter for skiing?
Yes, winter RV rental in Plattsburgh, NY is a real option and a fun one if you're chasing Whiteface Mountain or Mount Pisgah powder. Several local hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore-power hookups designed for cold-weather camping. January lows in Plattsburgh average around 12 F, so look for four-season listings and plan to stay at a campground with winter electric service or a private host driveway. Message the host about cold-weather prep (heated water hose, skirting, tank treatments), Plattsburgh owners are pros at it and many include the gear. Suddenly an Adirondack ski trip becomes the most cozy weekend of your year.
