Rouses Point camping overview
Rouses Point sits at the northern tip of Lake Champlain in Clinton County, New York, right on the Canada-United States border with Quebec. The village lies on the western shore at the source of the Richelieu River, in the northeastern corner of the town of Champlain, north of Plattsburgh. The location makes it a practical staging point for RV travelers moving between the Adirondacks, Vermont's Champlain Islands, and Montreal.
Campgrounds in the immediate area cluster along the lakeshore and the Richelieu River corridor. Options nearest the village include Camping Gregoire Plage and Camping Coolbreeze, with Sunset Rock Rv Park & Lake Shore, Camping Du Lac Cristal, and Montys Bay Camp Site rounding out the closest sites. Most are private, seasonal parks oriented toward waterfront RV camping.
For state-run camping, the closest options sit south of Rouses Point in the Plattsburgh area, including Cumberland Bay State Park on Cumberland Bay and Ausable Point Campground further down the lake. Macomb Reservation State Park and Point Au Roche State Park are also within reach for day trips or overflow bookings.
Things to do around Rouses Point
Lake Champlain drives most of the recreation. Visitors can fish, boat, swim, cycle, and hike along the shoreline, and a recreational path connects the villages of Rouses Point and Champlain. The lake supports a well-known warm and cold water fishery, with species including northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, lake trout, brown trout, salmon, walleye, perch, and panfish.
History sits in view of the village. The ruins of 19th-century Fort Montgomery can be viewed from the Rouses Point to Alburgh, Vermont bridge (the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge), which connects the village to Vermont.
Day trips extend the map. Rouses Point is within about an hour of the Adirondack High Peaks and several Vermont ski resorts. Montreal sits roughly an hour north across the Quebec border, and Burlington is a similar distance southeast.

The camping window is short and clearly defined. Private lakeshore parks around Rouses Point typically open in May and close by mid-October, tracking the frost-free season on Lake Champlain. State-run options follow the same pattern, with most Champlain Valley campgrounds running from late May through Labor Day and a few loops staying open into September or early October.
Summer is peak season. Summers are usually short, warm, and humid, with daytime highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and comfortable nights. Waterfront sites at both state and private parks fill fastest on July and August weekends, so booking well ahead is worthwhile.
Shoulder seasons trade crowds for weather risk. Spring can bring high water on the lake, and shoreline campgrounds are prone to flooding in spring, which may result in reassignment of sites. Fall brings foliage and cool nights, but most private campgrounds close by mid to late October. The area receives an average of about 24 inches of snowfall each year, mainly between November and April, so winter RV camping is not practical at lakeshore parks.
How to book a campsite near Rouses Point
Private campgrounds along the lake, including Camping Gregoire Plage, Camping Coolbreeze, Sunset Rock Rv Park & Lake Shore, Camping Du Lac Cristal, and Montys Bay Camp Site, take reservations directly. Contact each park by phone or through its website; many require deposits for peak-summer weekends and holiday periods.
New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds in the Champlain Valley book through the ReserveAmerica system. Reservations can be made online or by calling the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance of the arrival date. Minimum lead time varies by park, so check the individual park page before booking.
For RV travelers crossing the Canadian border, plan documents and vehicle paperwork in advance. The Rouses Point port of entry connects directly to Quebec, and border wait times can affect check-in on peak weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is flat to gently rolling along the lakeshore, with sandy soils in places and mixed hardwood cover. Lakefront sites at Ausable Point and Cumberland Bay share a similar profile, with natural sand shorelines and gentle slopes toward the water. Most private parks in the area include water and electric hookups; full hookups and dump stations vary by park, so confirm with the operator when booking.
Amenities at state parks are functional rather than resort-style. Typical features include restrooms with showers, a trailer dump station, a car-top boat launch, a picnic area with pavilion rental, and a sand beach with a bathhouse. Cell coverage is generally good near the village and along US Route 11 and US Route 2.
Rules are worth reading before arrival. New York campgrounds require fires to be built in provided fireplaces, restrict fuel to dead and down wood, prohibit chainsaws, and require proof of a current rabies vaccination for pets.
