Campgrounds near Schroon Lake, New York
Schroon Lake sits inside the Adirondack Park in Essex County, New York, along Interstate 87 between Lake George and the High Peaks region. The hamlet fronts a lake of about 4,105 acres with 24.7 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 152 feet, drawing RV travelers looking for swimming, boating, and paddling within a short drive of camp.
Private campgrounds cluster along the Schroon River and US Route 9 corridor. Medcalf Acres Riverfront Campground and its associated Medcalf Acres Campsite sit on the river north of the hamlet, while Tin Teepe Family Campground and Riverside Pines Campsites and Cabins offer additional riverside and wooded sites in the area. Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks provides a larger family-oriented resort experience nearby.
Because the region falls inside the Adirondack Park, RV renters also have access to state-run Department of Environmental Conservation campgrounds within a short drive, giving a mix of full-service private parks and rustic public options.
Things to do near Schroon Lake
The lake anchors most trip plans. RV travelers use the town beach and public boat launch for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing for lake trout, landlocked salmon, and smallmouth bass. The Schroon River is a slower float suited to tubing and canoeing, and several riverside campgrounds rent equipment on site.
Hiking is the other big draw. Pharaoh Mountain and Pharaoh Lake Wilderness trailheads sit east of the hamlet, while Hoffman Notch Wilderness lies to the west. Families often day-trip to Natural Stone Bridge and Caves in Pottersville and to Lake George Village for arcades, mini golf, and the Great Escape amusement park.
The hamlet itself hosts summer band concerts at the town park, a weekly farmers market, and small diners and ice cream stands within walking distance of the main beach.

Most private campgrounds around Schroon Lake operate from mid-May through mid-October, tracking the Adirondack camping season. Memorial Day weekend opens the season, and Columbus Day weekend typically closes it. Winter RV camping is not practical here: heavy snow, subzero cold, and campground closures shut down most sites from November through April.
July and August are peak season. Sites fill weeks or months ahead, especially for holiday weekends and any waterfront or full-hookup site. Black flies are active from mid-May into June, and mosquitoes remain a factor near the river through summer. Bring repellent and expect biting insects at dusk.
September brings the strongest value window. Nights turn cool, bugs drop off, and Adirondack foliage typically peaks from late September through the first week of October. Weekend rates and demand stay high during peak color, but midweek availability improves noticeably after Labor Day.
How to book a site
Private campgrounds around Schroon Lake, including Medcalf Acres Riverfront Campground, Tin Teepe Family Campground, Riverside Pines Campsites and Cabins, and Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks, each take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Deposits are usually required, and holiday weekends often carry minimum-night stays.
New York State DEC campgrounds within driving range, such as Eagle Point and Paradox Lake, are booked through the ReserveAmerica system, online or by phone at 1-800-456-CAMP. State sites can be reserved up to nine months in advance, so summer weekends can be locked in as early as the previous fall.
For July, August, and foliage weekends, book two to three months out at a minimum. Waterfront and pull-through sites that fit larger Class A and Class C rentals sell out first, so filter by rig length and hookup type before choosing dates.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into Schroon Lake are paved and RV-friendly. The closest I-87 access is Exit 28 (NY-74) north of the hamlet or Exit 27 (South Schroon Road) to the south, both feeding into US Route 9, the main corridor for area campgrounds. Cell service is reliable in the hamlet and along I-87 but drops off quickly on backcountry roads and trailheads.
Hookups vary. Riverside private parks typically offer water and electric with a mix of full-hookup sites, while state DEC campgrounds are rustic, with potable water spigots and a dump station on site rather than in-site hookups. Firewood must be sourced locally under New York State rules to protect forests from invasive pests.
Black bears live throughout the Adirondacks. Store food and trash inside the RV or in provided bear-resistant containers, and never leave coolers out overnight.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Schroon Lake, NY
What is the average cost to rent an RV in Schroon Lake, NY?
An RV rental in Schroon Lake is surprisingly affordable, especially compared to nearby Lake Placid or Lake George tourist hubs. On RVezy, you'll typically see travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, while Class C motorhomes and larger Class A rigs range from about $175 to $325 per night depending on season and amenities. To score a cheap RV rental Schroon Lake, book midweek in late spring or early fall, when Adirondack foliage is stunning but summer demand has cooled. Pro tip: filter for hosts offering delivery to Eagle Point Campground and you'll save fuel money plus skip the learning curve of driving an unfamiliar rig through Northway exits 27 and 28.
dec.ny.gov/places/eagle-point-campground-and-day-use-areaDo I need a special driver's license to rent an RV in Schroon Lake?
Good news for first-timers: a regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Schroon Lake for almost every motorhome, campervan or travel trailer on RVezy. New York only requires an additional R endorsement for personal recreational vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and the vast majority of RVs available here fall well below that. You must be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set to cruise Route 9 into the Adirondacks.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-license-classesWhat protection is included with my RVezy rental in Schroon Lake?
Every RV rental in Schroon Lake booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on enjoying the lake instead of worrying about what-ifs. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle and gives you real peace of mind on winding Adirondack roads like Route 74 toward Ticonderoga. During checkout you choose your coverage level, with tiers ranging from basic to premium so you can match your comfort zone. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides substantial financial protection backed by RVezy support whenever you need it. Tip: opting up one tier is usually only a few dollars a night and well worth it for a stress-free trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Schroon Lake RV trip changes?
Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to lock in your Adirondack getaway. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period after booking so you can confirm dates with family before fully committing. Refunds beyond that grace period depend on how far out your trip is, and special circumstances like natural disasters are handled through RVezy support, which matters in a region where the occasional nor'easter or ice storm can sweep across Schroon Lake. To see the exact policy that applies to your reservation, check your booking confirmation or visit the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: book early for Adirondack Marathon weekend in September, then relax knowing you have built-in flexibility.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Schroon Lake RV trip?
Absolutely, the Adirondacks are a dog's dream and a pet-friendly RV rental in Schroon Lake is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and message the host to confirm any deposit or breed notes. Once you arrive, Eagle Point Campground welcomes leashed pets, and the trails up Mount Severance and into Pharaoh Lake Wilderness are tail-wagging favorites with shaded forest paths and lake swims at the top. Downtown, you'll find water bowls outside many Main Street shops and dog-friendly patios near the Schroon Lake Bandstand. Pro tip: pack a tick comb, since black-legged ticks are active in the region from April through October.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/hiking/mount-severanceCan the RV be delivered to my Schroon Lake campsite?
Yes, RV delivery in Schroon Lake is one of the smartest ways to start a trip, especially if you're nervous about towing a trailer up Interstate 87 to exit 28. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up the RV right at your campsite at Eagle Point, Paradox Lake, Schroon River Escape, or Medcalf Acres Riverfront Campground. They'll level the rig, connect hookups, walk you through everything from the propane to the awning, and leave you ready to roast marshmallows. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: ask about delivery when messaging the host before booking, and request setup so your first night feels effortless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039140513-Delivery-options-explainedHow does mileage work and how far can I travel on a Schroon Lake RV trip?
Mileage policies are set by each host on RVezy, and you'll see the exact daily allowance and per-mile overage rate right on the listing before you book. Some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is a fantastic pick for an RV road trip from Schroon Lake. To give you a sense of distance: Lake Placid is about 65 miles north, Lake George village sits 30 miles south, Ticonderoga and Fort Ticonderoga are roughly 35 miles east, and Montreal is around 160 miles up the Northway. If you're planning a bigger loop through Vermont's Green Mountains, message the host before booking to confirm a mileage package that fits your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Schroon%20Lake%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Schroon Lake for RVs?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Schroon Lake. Eagle Point Campground, run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), sits on the west shore with 72 wooded sites, hot showers, a dump station and a boat launch, and accommodates rigs up to 30 feet. Paradox Lake Campground, just east on Route 74, offers a sandy beach and quieter vibe. Schroon River Escape and Medcalf Acres Riverfront Campground both have full hookup sites directly on the Schroon River, plus pools and tubing. Schroon Lake RV Park is the newest in town with modern hookups. Pro tip: book Eagle Point up to 9 months ahead through ReserveAmerica for July and August.
dec.ny.gov/places/eagle-point-campground-and-day-use-areaWhen is the best time of year for a Schroon Lake RV trip?
Schroon Lake truly shines from mid-May through mid-October, with each season delivering a different magic. June through August brings warm 75 to 82°F days perfect for swimming at the Schroon Lake Town Beach, paddling the 9-mile lake, or catching a Seagle Festival opera performance. Late September into early October is leaf-peeping gold, with sugar maples turning fiery red along Route 9 and cooler 50s to 60s nights ideal for campfires. State campgrounds like Eagle Point typically operate from mid-May to Columbus Day. Winter is its own adventure with snowmobiling, ice fishing derbies on the frozen lake, and free downhill skiing at the Schroon Lake Ski Center, though most RV parks close. Pro tip: book the third weekend in September for the Adirondack Marathon weekend.
dec.ny.gov/places/eagle-point-campground-and-day-use-areaI've never driven an RV. Is Schroon Lake a good place to start?
Schroon Lake is genuinely one of the friendliest places for first time renting an RV in the Northeast. The terrain around the hamlet is gently rolling rather than steep, traffic is light outside of summer weekends, and big-box parking lots in nearby Warrensburg and Ticonderoga give you safe spaces to practice turns. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you slide-outs, propane, water systems and dump procedures before you ever leave the driveway. You can also message the host with questions before booking. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or campervan rental Schroon Lake for your first trip, since they drive much like a large van and fit easily into Eagle Point's standard 30-foot sites.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-license-classesWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Schroon Lake includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 9 or a dead battery at the Pharaoh Lake trailhead is a single phone call away from help. Your host is also your local expert and is usually quick to answer questions about the rig's quirks. For anything bigger, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Cell service is solid in the village and around Eagle Point but can be patchy deeper into Hoffman Notch, so download offline maps before heading into the wilderness. Pro tip: snap photos of any pre-existing wear at pickup so the return is smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Schroon Lake RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border road trips are very doable from Schroon Lake since Montreal is just about 2.5 hours up Interstate 87, and Vermont is a short ferry or bridge crossing across Lake Champlain. Many RVezy hosts allow travel into Canada and neighboring states, but you must confirm with your specific host before booking because insurance and protection coverage need to be aligned. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. For Canada, bring your passport and the vehicle documents your host provides. Popular routes from Schroon Lake include the Green Mountains via Route 74 and the Lake Champlain Byway through Ticonderoga to Burlington.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for your Adirondack adventure is easier than you'd expect. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs come in around 6 to 10 MPG. Gas prices in the Schroon Lake area typically run a bit higher than downstate New York since the nearest big stations are at Northway exits 27 and 28, so top off in Warrensburg or Ticonderoga where prices are usually cheaper. Diesel is available at the Mobil and Stewart's stations along Route 9. Pro tip: a typical week of RV camping near Schroon Lake with day trips to Lake Placid and Lake George burns roughly $150 to $300 in fuel for a Class C.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Schroon Lake?
For the best campgrounds near Schroon Lake, plan ahead, especially for July, August, and fall foliage weekends. Eagle Point State Campground accepts reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica or by calling 1-800-456-2267, and waterfront sites for summer Saturdays often go within hours of opening. Paradox Lake and Putnam Pond DEC campgrounds follow the same 9-month window. Private parks like Schroon River Escape, Medcalf Acres, and Schroon Lake RV Park book direct on their websites and tend to fill 2 to 4 months ahead for peak summer. Pro tip: if you're flexible, Sunday through Thursday arrivals are almost always available even at the last minute, and rates are lower.
dec.ny.gov/places/eagle-point-campground-and-day-use-areaWhat are the local driving conditions like around Schroon Lake?
Driving around Schroon Lake is refreshingly relaxed compared to downstate New York. Interstate 87 (the Northway) runs north-south just west of the hamlet with exits 27 and 28 serving Schroon Lake, and US Route 9 is the scenic main road through town. Mountain grades exist but are gentle, and most roads are well-maintained two-lane blacktop. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, occasional moose in the Hoffman Notch area, and logging trucks on Route 28N toward Minerva. Winter brings real snow and ice from December through March, so most renters stick to May through October. Pro tip: cell coverage drops on Route 74 east of Paradox Lake, so screenshot directions before heading to Ticonderoga.
dot.ny.gov/regional-offices/region1What amenities will I find at Schroon Lake area campgrounds?
Adirondack campgrounds offer everything from rustic to full-resort, so you can match the experience to your comfort level. Eagle Point State Campground provides 72 wooded sites with picnic tables, fire rings, hot showers, flush toilets, a trailer dump station, and a boat launch, though there are no individual hookups, which is typical of DEC campgrounds. Private parks like Schroon River Escape, Medcalf Acres, and Schroon Lake RV Park offer full water, electric and sewer hookups, Wi-Fi at common areas, pools, camp stores, and free firewood deals. Where to dump? Eagle Point and most private campgrounds have on-site dump stations included with your stay. Pro tip: fill your fresh-water tank before arriving at Eagle Point since potable spigots can be a walk from your site.
dec.ny.gov/places/eagle-point-campground-and-day-use-areaWhat features and amenities come with a typical Schroon Lake RV rental?
Most motorhome rentals Schroon Lake on RVezy come fully equipped for an immediate Adirondack getaway. Expect a queen or king bed, sleeping for 4 to 8 people total, a full kitchen with fridge, stovetop, microwave and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator, outdoor awning, outdoor speakers, and even a TV with streaming when in cell range. Linens, kitchenware, camp chairs and outdoor games are often available as add-ons. Wi-Fi at downtown Schroon Lake cafes and the public library covers any gaps. Pro tip: ask the host about kayak or bike racks since hauling watercraft to Schroon Lake's 23.7-mile shoreline is half the fun.
dec.ny.gov/places/adirondack-parkWhat add-ons and options are available, and how do pickup and dropoff work?
RVezy hosts in Schroon Lake offer popular add-ons that make life easier: kayak or paddleboard packages, bike racks, generator use, propane refills, linens, camp chairs, and even pre-stocked grocery options. Fees vary by host and are clearly listed on each RV listing. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Schroon Lake with a thorough walkthrough included, or you can request delivery directly to your campground for an additional fee. Drop-off works the same way in reverse, with most hosts asking that fuel and propane be returned at the same level you received them. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup and a kayak rental in one message to the host and you'll often get a better overall rate than booking pieces separately.
dec.ny.gov/places/eagle-point-campground-and-day-use-areaHow does payment work and what should I expect for the security deposit?
Booking an RV rental in Schroon Lake is straightforward and entirely handled inside the RVezy platform. You pay by credit card at the time of booking, with the total clearly broken out into rental, service fees, taxes, and any add-ons you choose. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip and is released after a smooth return, typically within a few days. The amount varies by RV size and value but is shown upfront on every listing. To avoid any deposit issues, take dated photos of the rig inside and out at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and follow your host's cleanliness expectations. Pro tip: dump the holding tanks at Eagle Point's dump station before returning to avoid extra cleaning fees.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre Schroon Lake RV rentals available in the winter?
Yes, winter RV adventures around Schroon Lake are a hidden gem, though availability is more limited than summer. Some RVezy hosts keep four-season rigs on the platform year-round, equipped with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces that handle Adirondack lows that can dip well below freezing. Most state and private campgrounds close after Columbus Day, but a few private sites stay open with electric hookups for snowmobilers and ice-fishing tournaments on the frozen lake. Gore Mountain just west of town makes it a real winter destination. Pro tip: confirm with your host that the unit is winterized for use, not winterized for storage, and pack tire chains for Route 9 just in case.
