Camping near Ticonderoga, New York
Ticonderoga sits at the southern end of Lake Champlain in Essex County, New York, where the Adirondack foothills meet the lake and the Vermont border. The town is best known for Fort Ticonderoga and its position on the narrow strait between Lake Champlain and Lake George, making it a practical base for RV travelers exploring both waterfronts and the eastern Adirondack Park.
Campground options in the area split between private RV parks and state-park campgrounds on both sides of the lake. Brookwood RV Resort, 10 Acres Campground & RV Park, and Ten Acres Campground and RV Park serve travelers who want hookups and standard RV amenities close to town. Across the lake in Vermont, DAR State Park sits directly on Lake Champlain in Addison, and Half Moon Pond State Park sits within the larger Bomoseen State Park in Hubbardton.
Because the region straddles two states, trip planning often involves both the New York State Parks reservation system and the Vermont State Parks system. Fort Ticonderoga, Mount Defiance, and the Lake George corridor to the south anchor most itineraries.
Things to do around Ticonderoga
Fort Ticonderoga is the anchor attraction, with reenactments, guided tours, the King's Garden, and Mount Defiance overlooking the lake. Lake Champlain and Lake George offer boating, fishing, paddling, and swimming, and a car ferry at Ticonderoga connects to Shoreham, Vermont, during the warm months.
Hiking options range from short family walks to full-day climbs. Mount Defiance has a short driveable summit road with panoramic views, and the eastern Adirondacks include trails on Rogers Rock and Cook Mountain. The Half Moon Pond area features a vast trail system, from short walks to full-day hikes, with trails also connecting to High Pond and the broader Bomoseen State Park.
On rainy days, families use Fort Ticonderoga's indoor exhibits, the Ticonderoga Heritage Museum, and shops along Montcalm Street.

The camping season in the Ticonderoga area is short and clearly defined. State-park campgrounds across the lake follow strict seasonal windows: DAR State Park operates from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, and Half Moon Pond State Park operates from Memorial Day weekend through the second Monday in October. Private RV parks near town generally open earlier in spring and close in mid to late fall, depending on the operator.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm days, warm lake water, full-service ferry runs, and heavy demand at Fort Ticonderoga and lakeside sites. Weekends fill first, and holiday weekends fill months in advance. Bugs, particularly blackflies in late spring and mosquitoes near ponds, are worth planning around.
Fall shoulder season is popular for foliage, typically peaking in late September through mid-October in the Adirondack and Green Mountain foothills. Winters are cold and snowy, and most campgrounds in the region are closed from November through April.
How to book campgrounds near Ticonderoga
New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds both book through ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites released at 8 AM Monday through Friday and 9 AM Saturday and Sunday between March 15 and Labor Day. Reservations must be made through the ReserveAmerica system rather than by calling individual campgrounds.
Vermont State Parks, including DAR State Park and Half Moon Pond State Park, use a separate system. As of the 2026 season, camping reservations open daily on a rolling 11-month window at 9 AM. Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week.
Private parks like Brookwood RV Resort and 10 Acres Campground & RV Park book directly through the operator. Book summer weekends well ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Ticonderoga range from full-hookup RV resorts to rustic state-park sites without electricity or water at the site. State-park campgrounds in the region generally offer flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, but few offer hookups. DAR State Park includes 47 tent/trailer sites and 24 lean-tos, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, plus a small picnic area on a bluff above the lake, a stone pavilion, a volleyball area, and shore access.
Rig size matters. DAR State Park is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, while Half Moon Pond's sites are more compact and better suited to small trailers, vans, and tents; hookups are not provided at either park.
Cell service is inconsistent in the hills and along the lake, and firewood brought into Vermont state parks from outside the state must be packaged, labeled, and heat-treated with USDA or state agriculture certification.
