The area is built for water and trail activity. Whetstone Gulf State Park has a rim trail that circles a three-mile gorge, a reservoir popular for canoeing, a man-made swimming area, and a network of hiking trails. The reservoir is stocked with tiger muskie and largemouth bass, and shore fishing is allowed outside the designated swimming area. The Indian River near Natural Bridge offers quiet paddling through wooded banks and farmland. Day trips to Sackets Harbor Battlefield, Wellesley Island State Park, and Old Forge add lake beaches, historic sites, and small-town amenities.

The camping season in this part of northern New York is short and clearly defined. Whetstone Gulf State Park typically runs from mid-May through mid-October, with the swimming beach opening in late June and closing around Labor Day. Most private parks in the region follow a similar May-to-October window, though Natural Bridge KOA also offers seasonal and monthly extended-stay arrangements. July and August are peak booking months. Sites near water fill first, and Fort Drum-related traffic keeps demand strong on weekends. Late spring can be wet and cool, with black flies common in the woods through early June. September brings quieter campgrounds, cooler nights, and strong fall color across the Tug Hill Plateau and western Adirondacks by early October. Winter is cold and snowy. Lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario piles up on Tug Hill, one of the snowiest places east of the Rocky Mountains. Most private campgrounds close for the season, and state park campgrounds are shut down for camping, though day-use trails at Whetstone Gulf stay open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Expect a mix of wooded, gravel, and grassy sites. Whetstone Gulf State Park has 56 wooded sites, some with electric hookups at 15, 30, or 50 amp, plus hot showers, flush restrooms, and a dump station. Maximum vehicle length is around 30 feet, so larger rigs should confirm site fit before booking. Tents and RVs share the loops. Natural Bridge / Watertown KOA Journey offers hookup RV sites with 30 and 50 amp service, cabins, a heated pool open during the camping season, a dog park, laundry, and a camp store. Cell coverage and Wi-Fi are generally usable at the private parks but can be spotty at state-park sites and in wooded Adirondack terrain. Bring insect repellent in late spring, layers for cool nights even in July, and a New York State fishing license if planning to fish creeks or reservoirs.
