Campgrounds and RV parks near Wolcott, NY

Hiking is the headline activity. Of the roughly 4.37 miles of trails at Chimney Bluffs State Park, the Bluff Trail is the most popular, a one-mile route that runs along the edge of the bluffs between the Garner Road and East Bay Road parking areas. In winter the park is popular for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Water access is easy from Port Bay, Sodus Bay, and Little Sodus Bay. Fishing and boating opportunities are plentiful in Lake Ontario and the adjoining Little Sodus Bay, and Fair Haven Beach State Park features 1,500 feet of sandy beach including 600 feet of guarded swimming area. The surrounding countryside supports wine tours, apple orchards, and short drives to Finger Lakes waterfalls and the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.

The RV season along this stretch of Lake Ontario is short but active. The camping season generally runs from mid-May through mid-October at state parks, with many private facilities opening a bit earlier in spring and closing for winter. At Fair Haven Beach State Park, peak season runs from the end of June to the end of August, and lakeshore campgrounds book out well ahead for summer weekends. Spring is cool and damp, with slow leaf-out. The last frosts usually occur by late April near the lake but as late as mid-May farther south, and the spring months are statistically the driest of the year due in part to the stabilizing effect of the Great Lakes. Fall brings crisp air and vivid colour, though sites at lakeside campgrounds can experience strong winds. Winter is severe. Since Lake Ontario does not freeze in most winters, the lake-effect machine can remain active throughout the winter, and total season snowfall ranges from about 90 inches in Rochester to over 120 inches along the lake shore east of the city. Most private RV parks close from November through March.

Terrain around Wolcott is a rolling patchwork of drumlins, creek valleys, orchards, and lakeshore bluffs. The bluffs themselves are formed from eroded drumlins, teardrop-shaped hills of glacial till deposited and shaped by glaciers during the most recent ice age. Private parks tend to sit a mile or two back from the lake on wooded parcels or along the bays. RV amenities vary by park. Electric service is typically 30-amp or 50-amp depending on campground section, hookup options differ between full-service and electric-only sites, and most RV-suitable sites feature gravel pads rather than paved surfaces. Big-rig travellers should confirm pull-thru availability at booking. Expect biting insects near wetlands in early summer, cool lake breezes even on warm days, and limited cell coverage in wooded sections. Groceries, fuel, and basic supplies are available in Wolcott village and in Sodus Point to the west.
