Campgrounds and RV parks near Avon, NC

Avon sits on Hatteras Island along NC-12, roughly midway down Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The village is a common base for RV travelers because it puts sound-side and ocean-side campgrounds within a short drive of protected federal beach, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and the Pamlico Sound flats. Camping options fall into two groups. Private parks in and around Avon, including Avon by the Sea, Sands of Time Campground, and Island Hide-A-Way Campground, generally offer hookups, showers, and family amenities. The National Park Service operates Cape Point Campground near Buxton and Frisco Campground near Frisco, both within Cape Hatteras National Seashore and reachable from Avon in under thirty minutes along NC-12. The seashore campgrounds sit behind the dunes with beach-access boardwalks. They do not offer hookups, but they place RV travelers directly on federal beach with room for larger rigs and easy access to surf fishing, off-road vehicle ramps, and the lighthouse.

Cape Point Campground and Frisco Campground are reserved through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Frisco accepts reservations up to six months in advance. Cape Point uses a much shorter four-day window because low-lying sites can flood after heavy rain, so travelers watching the forecast can often pick up sites closer to arrival. A reservation is required, but same-day reservations are permitted at both seashore campgrounds when sites are open; payment still has to be completed through Recreation.gov, so a phone or connected device is needed on arrival. Private parks around Avon, including Avon by the Sea, Sands of Time Campground, and Island Hide-A-Way Campground, are booked directly with the campground. Summer weekends and holiday weeks should be booked well ahead.
