Campgrounds and RV parks near Bolton, NC

Water recreation drives most trips. White Lake supports swimming, paddling, and small-boat use, with private-campground beaches and public access points around its shoreline. Lake Waccamaw is the largest of the natural Carolina Bay lakes and is a short drive away. The lake is very shallow, so wading extends well out from shore, and a swimming dock provides easy water access from site 1 of the state park campground. The park features over 10 miles of hiking trails, two boat ramps, lakeside boardwalks, and a visitor center with exhibits about the lake's unique ecology. For nature-focused visits, the Green Swamp Preserve covers roughly 15,000 acres of longleaf pine savanna with orchids and insectivorous plants, and trails wind through habitat with Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, sundews, and red-cockaded woodpeckers.

The Bolton area follows a humid subtropical pattern. Summers are hot and humid, with daytime highs often reaching the upper 80s and low 90s, and winters are mild and brief, with temperatures usually staying above freezing. Late spring and early fall bring the most comfortable weather for RV travel, with warm days, cool nights, and lower bug pressure than midsummer. Summer is peak season at White Lake and the surrounding private campgrounds. Weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day fill first, and family campgrounds with beach access book weeks or months out. Strong thunderstorms can be expected throughout the summer months due to the location in the southeastern US. Fall shoulder season, from mid-September through October, is a strong window for RV travelers looking for open sites and cooler nights. Atlantic hurricane season runs through November, so trips in late summer and early fall should be planned with storm-tracking in mind, since coastal southeastern North Carolina sits in an active landfall zone. Winter camping is possible but limited, with some private parks operating reduced services.

Private campgrounds around White Lake are family-run and lean toward long-standing seasonal communities rather than corporate resorts. Many properties offer private beaches, docks, piers, pools, and water-sport rentals, and family features include cabins, RV sites, playgrounds, and planned activities. Expect a mix of full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and permanent seasonal units, with beach or lakefront access at the larger properties. At Lake Waccamaw State Park, conditions are more rustic. Lake Waccamaw offers four primitive group camping areas nestled beneath the trees. The fifth campsite is a yurt campsite with a permanent tent. Picnic tables, fire circles and charcoal grills are located in the sites and pit toilets are located nearby. Please be aware that these are hike-in campsites that do not have water or electricity onsite. The front gate is closed and locked at posted closing times, and there will be no exiting or entering the gate after this time. Cell coverage in the pine flats can be spotty, so download maps before arrival.
