Campgrounds and RV parks near Briar Chapel, NC

Jordan Lake anchors most trip plans. The reservoir supports boating, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, swimming at designated beaches, and picnicking, with multiple boat ramps and swim beaches spread across the recreation area. A North Carolina fishing license is required, and anglers commonly target crappie, bluegill, and largemouth bass. Wildlife viewing is a draw of its own. The lake is one of the largest summertime homes of the bald eagle in the eastern United States, and spring migration between April and June is the most reliable window for sightings. Hiking trails link several access areas. Off the water, families can head into Chapel Hill for the University of North Carolina campus, the North Carolina Botanical Garden, and downtown dining. Pittsboro, just south of Briar Chapel, adds small-town shops and galleries.

Peak season runs from late spring through early fall. A per-vehicle entrance fee is charged at Jordan Lake daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and on weekends and holidays in April, May, and September. Weekends and holidays fill quickly during this window, so early booking matters. Campground opening schedules vary by loop, and only one of the three main family campgrounds (Crosswinds, Parkers Creek, or Poplar Point) is kept open year-round; the other two run on a seasonal schedule that typically spans early spring through late fall. New Hope Overlook walk-in tent sites and the group camping areas also run on a seasonal spring-to-fall schedule. Summer is popular for swimming and boating, but heat and humidity are significant. Spring brings mild days and eagle-viewing opportunities. Fall offers cooler temperatures and lighter crowds after Labor Day. During the winter season, water is shut off at individual campsites, though water remains available at bathhouses.

Jordan Lake campgrounds provide picnic tables, grills, lantern holders, drinking water, restrooms, showers, trash containers, and dump stations. Crosswinds has 182 campsites with 134 offering water and electric hookups; Parkers Creek has 250 sites with 120 electric and water hookups; Poplar Point is the largest with 579 sites and 363 electric and water hookups. Firewood is available for purchase at the park. Crosswinds and Poplar Point campground gates allow 24-hour access, while Parkers Creek gates lock at posted times that shift by season. Private parks vary. Spring Hill Park offers wooded sites in a quieter, more rustic setting close to Chapel Hill, and Goodwins RV Campground provides full-hookup sites suitable for larger rigs. Campfires are permitted only in designated grills or fire rings, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited within the state recreation area.
