The area combines rural drives with river access and Civil War history. Raven Rock State Park, northwest of Keener, has hiking trails including the Raven Rock Loop Trail, a moderate 2.6-mile trail that leads to the Raven Rock overlook, and a campground with sites for tents and RVs. Bentonville Battlefield near Newton Grove preserves the site of the last major Confederate offensive of the Civil War and includes a visitor center with artifacts. For water, the Cape Fear River and Black River offer paddling and fishing. Canoeing and kayaking are popular on the Cape Fear River, though the state park does not provide rentals, so paddlers must bring their own equipment. Families staying at Raleigh Oaks RV and Cottage Resort or Fayetteville RV Resort and Cottages can also stay on-property, with pools, playgrounds, and dog parks on site.

Keener has a humid subtropical climate, classified as Cfa under the Köppen system, with hot, muggy summers and short, mild winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. From late March through May, daytime highs climb from the mid-60s to around 80 Fahrenheit, wildflowers bloom, and rainfall is moderate. October and early November bring cooler nights, lower humidity, and fewer bugs, which suits longer hikes and paddling trips. Summer is the busiest season at private RV resorts, with pools open and long daylight hours. It is also the wettest stretch of the year, with August the month with the most rainfall, when rain falls for 17 days and typically brings around 87 mm of precipitation, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November and peaks in August and September, so travelers should watch tropical forecasts. Winter is quieter. Freezing nights occur but heavy snow is rare, and larger commercial parks along I-95 generally stay open year-round with reduced activity programming.

Terrain around Keener is flat farmland and pine woods, with sandy soils typical of the Coastal Plain. Most private parks near the I-95 corridor sit on level gravel or paved pads with 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups, and cable or Wi-Fi. Resorts like Raleigh Oaks RV and Cottage Resort and Fayetteville RV Resort and Cottages generally offer pull-through sites that can handle larger rigs; confirm exact site length with the operator when booking. Expect warm-weather insects, particularly mosquitoes and ticks, from late spring through early fall. Cell coverage is generally strong along I-95 and thinner on back roads. Grocery, fuel, and propane stops are available in nearby Wade, Godwin, Dunn, and Clinton, and full-service shopping is a short drive to Fayetteville.
