Campgrounds and RV parks near Maxton, NC

The Lumber River is the main draw. Paddlers launch canoes and kayaks from access points inside Lumber River State Park for day trips or multi-day float camps, and the river is known for largemouth bass, black crappie, catfish, and redbreast sunfish. Fishing is also easy from lakeside campgrounds such as Bass Lake RV Campground and Bass Lake Campground. Off the water, travelers use Maxton as a base for exploring Lumbee cultural sites in Robeson County, the Museum of the Southeast American Indian at UNC Pembroke, and the shops and restaurants in downtown Lumberton. Golfers head to the Pinehurst and Southern Pines area, roughly an hour northwest. For families, Idlewild Farm Stays offers on-site farm activities, and the Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey typically has a pool and playground for shorter stops.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of North Carolina. From March through May, daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, wildflowers bloom along the Lumber River, and biting insects are still manageable. Late September through November brings similar temperatures, lower humidity, and some of the clearest, driest weather of the year. Summer is hot and muggy. July highs average near 90 degrees Fahrenheit with high dew points, and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent from June through August. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks in September, and past storms have caused major flooding along the Lumber River, so travelers should watch forecasts closely. Winter is short and mild. Daytime highs typically reach the low to mid 50s, overnight lows dip into the mid 30s, and snowfall is rare. Most private campgrounds stay open year-round, though some amenities such as pools close in the colder months.

Sites in and around Maxton are mostly level, sandy, and shaded by longleaf and loblolly pine. Full hookups with water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric are typical at Bass Lake RV Campground and the Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey, while smaller properties such as Camp Pedro and Idlewild Farm Stays may offer a mix of full-hookup, partial-hookup, and primitive sites. Lumber River State Park sites are primitive with no hookups. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable across the Sandhills, though it thins along the Lumber River corridor. Wi-Fi quality at private parks varies. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Lumberton off I-95. Biting insects, ticks, and chiggers are active from spring through early fall, and controlled burns are common in surrounding pine forests during winter and early spring.
