Campgrounds and RV parks near Riegelwood, NC

The Cape Fear and Black rivers are the main draw for paddlers, with kayak and canoe access to some of the oldest cypress stands in North Carolina. Lake Waccamaw is popular for boating, fishing, and swimming, and its state park has short trails around a Carolina bay lake ecosystem. Wilmington sits about 30 minutes east and offers the USS North Carolina Battleship, a historic riverfront downtown, and family attractions including go-karts, mini-golf, and a water park. The barrier island beaches at Wrightsville, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Oak Island, and Holden Beach are all within an hour's drive. Birdwatching, freshwater fishing, and short interpretive hikes at the surrounding state parks fill out a typical trip. Moore's Creek National Battlefield, the site of an early Revolutionary War victory, is a quiet half-day stop a short drive from town.

Southeastern North Carolina has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Freezing temperatures occur regularly between mid-November and mid-March, but severe or long-lasting cold is very rare, so shoulder-season RV travel is common. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for camping. Daytime highs sit in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is lower than in summer, and afternoon storms are less frequent. Wildflower and dogwood bloom peaks in April, and October typically brings the clearest skies of the year. Summer is the busiest booking window, driven by beach traffic to Wrightsville, Carolina Beach, and the Brunswick Islands. Heat is oppressive, humidity is high, and heavy afternoon thunderstorms are routine, with severe thunderstorm risk highest during the spring and summer months. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November and peaks in August and September, when landfalling tropical systems can force closures and evacuations along the coast. Winter is the quietest season, with cool nights, occasional freezes, and reduced hours at some park facilities.

Sites in this region are typically pine-shaded and level, cut through loblolly stands or set along creeks and ponds. Full hookups are common at private RV parks, with 50-amp service, water, and sewer at most sites. State park campgrounds vary: some have electric and water, others are non-electric with a shared dump station. Insects are a factor from late spring through early fall. Mosquitoes, ticks, and no-see-ums are active near the rivers and swamps, so repellent and screens matter. Alligators are present in some lakes and slow-moving waters; keep pets and children away from banks at dusk. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Wilmington and Highway 74/76 but weaker in more remote state park loops. Groceries, propane, and fuel are easiest to source in Whiteville, Leland, or Wilmington rather than in Riegelwood itself.
