Camping near Bellaire, Ohio
Bellaire sits on the Ohio River in Belmont County, directly across from Marshall County, West Virginia. That puts RV travelers within a short drive of both Ohio state park camping and privately run RV parks on either side of the river. The area is Appalachian foothill country: wooded ridges, small lakes, and river valleys shaped by the region's coal-mining history.
Options range from resort-style parks to quiet rural sites. Grand Vue Park, perched above the Ohio Valley in Moundsville, West Virginia, offers full hookup RV sites with long-range views and on-site amenities. Barkcamp State Park, southwest of Bellaire, is the closest Ohio state park campground and draws campers with a lake, beach, and wooded loops. Smaller private options include Big Gs RV Campground, Ernies Acres Campground, and Hotel RV West Alexander just over the Pennsylvania line.
Wheeling, West Virginia is roughly ten miles up the river and serves as the main hub for groceries, fuel, and attractions.
Things to do around Bellaire
Barkcamp State Park anchors most outdoor plans in the area. The park surrounds 117-acre Belmont Lake, which allows hand-powered boats and craft with electric motors, and offers swimming from a sand beach, fishing, a walk-through archery range with 3D targets, and a mini-golf course. Wooded trails wind through the 1,005-acre park.
Grand Vue Park adds a different flavor for families: a large pool, mini golf, disc golf, hiking trails, and a zipline and aerial adventure course overlooking the Ohio Valley. Nearby Moundsville is home to the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex and the former West Virginia Penitentiary. Wheeling adds riverfront parks, the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, and Oglebay resort's zoo and gardens.

The camping season in this corner of the Ohio Valley runs strongest from late April through October. Barkcamp State Park's campground operates year round, but from November 1 to April 1 the park is in off-peak mode: the showerhouse and dump station remain available, water is limited to the office and shower house, and the B Loop is closed. Reservable Ohio state park sites and cabins are best booked for late spring through early fall.
Grand Vue Park's RV campground stays open through the cooler months, but from December 1 through April 1 only one bathhouse is open and a reduced number of sites are available for rental. Summer weekends fill quickly at both parks, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Fall brings hardwood color across Belmont County's ridges through mid-October.
Winter is cold and snow is common from December through March; several private campgrounds in the area close or reduce services during that stretch.
How to book a site
Ohio state parks, including Barkcamp State Park, take reservations through the state's reserveohio.com system. Most standard sites can be booked up to six months in advance and can be reserved for same-day arrival, while cabins and some site categories have different lead times. The group camp at Barkcamp is handled separately and requires advance contact with the park office.
Grand Vue Park takes reservations directly through its own website and by phone. Private parks such as Big Gs RV Campground, Ernies Acres Campground, and Hotel RV West Alexander typically book by phone or through their own online forms. Call ahead for holiday weekends and for any larger rig, since Barkcamp has a maximum RV length of 35 feet on many sites and all state park sites are back-in only.
What to expect on arrival
Terrain in this area is hilly. Access roads to Grand Vue Park climb from the river, though the main campground road is paved and manageable for big rigs. Barkcamp's campsites use ten-foot-wide concrete pads and all sites are back-in, with electric hookups at every site and a smaller number offering full water and sewer service. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Wheeling and along I-70, but can drop in the hollows around smaller private parks.
Ohio does not charge an entrance fee at state parks. Pets are allowed at Barkcamp on designated loops only, so note pet plans when booking. Firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving pests between counties, and campers should plan to reach grocery and fuel stops in Bellaire, St. Clairsville, or Wheeling before heading to more rural sites.
