Campgrounds and RV parks near Lucasville, OH

The main draw is Shawnee State Forest and its adjoining state park. Blue-blazed day hike loops run through the forest, and two well-stocked lakes provide good catches of largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie, and trout. Over 70 miles of bridle trails and primitive equestrian camp sites are located within the adjacent Shawnee State Forest, making the area a regional draw for riders. At Main - Shawnee State Park, families can use the swimming beach on Turkey Creek Lake, launch boats on Roosevelt or Turkey Creek lakes, and hike the Look-Out and Park Loop trails. Rowboats, canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and pedal boats can be rented May through October from the camp store. On-site amenities include disc golf, a 3D archery range, a static archery range, a playground, a splash pad, a dog park, and outdoor fitness equipment. Big Bear Lake Family Resort adds a private sandy beach, boat rentals, fishing docks, and a camp store, which suits families travelling with kids.

The camping season in the Lucasville area runs roughly from April through late October, with the busiest stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Summer weekends at Big Bear Lake Family Resort and Main - Shawnee State Park fill early, especially around holidays and when the park hosts events. Book several months ahead for July and August, and expect warm, humid conditions with afternoon thunderstorms. Spring brings cool nights, wildflowers, and higher creek levels. A trout derby is held annually on the fourth Saturday in April at Turkey Creek Lake, a useful anchor date for anglers planning a trip. Fall is one of the best windows for RV travel here. The hardwood ridges of the Shawnee forest turn in mid to late October, temperatures drop into a comfortable range, and midweek availability opens up. Winter operations vary by campground: private parks may run limited sites, while state-park facilities scale back services. From November 1 through April 1, the dump station has no water, so confirm water availability before booking a cold-weather stay.

Roads into the campgrounds are narrow and winding, with tight turns and steep grades in and around the state forest. Drivers of longer motorhomes and fifth wheels should approach Main - Shawnee State Park via State Route 125 rather than shortcut forest roads. Check site details carefully when making a reservation, as dimensions and site conditions vary. Cell service is spotty in the forest interior. Download maps before leaving Lucasville or Portsmouth, and top up on groceries, propane, and fuel in town. The state park has a small camp store, but selection is limited. Bears are not a concern in this part of Ohio, but raccoons, deer, and ticks are common. Standard food storage and tick checks after hikes are enough for most stays. On campsites that allow pets, a maximum of two pets is permitted, and pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet and attended at all times.
