Campgrounds near Rosemount, Ohio
Rosemount sits in Scioto County in southern Ohio, minutes from the Ohio River and the western edge of Shawnee State Park. The 1,095-acre park is set within the roughly 63,000-acre Shawnee State Forest in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, an area often called the Little Smokies. Rosemount works as a practical base for RV travelers drawn to river frontage, forested ridges, and easy resupply in nearby Portsmouth.
Camping options range from public state-park sites to private family resorts. Main - Shawnee State Park anchors the region with two developed camping areas, one near Roosevelt Lake and one along the Ohio River. Lazy Village Campground and RV Park, Big Bear Lake Family Resort, and Holiday Point Marina and Campground offer private-park alternatives with lake or river access. Bens Happy Trails Horsemens Camp serves equestrian travelers heading into the adjacent state forest.
The mix of ridge trails, two stocked lakes, and Ohio River access supports a wide range of trip styles within a short drive of Rosemount.
Things to do near Rosemount
Hiking is the headline draw. The Shawnee Backpack Trail runs more than 40 miles through wilderness area and includes portions of the Buckeye Trail and North Country Trail, with shorter park loops available for day hikers near Turkey Creek Lake.
On the water, two well-stocked lakes provide good catches of largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie, and trout. A trout derby is held annually at Turkey Creek Lake on the fourth Saturday in April. The full-service marina off U.S. Route 52 provides access to the Ohio River, and Holiday Point Marina and Campground offers additional river-based options.
Other options include the Black Bear Disc Golf Course near Turkey Lake, a state-park golf course, and over 70 miles of bridle trails in the surrounding state forest. A newer mountain biking trail system has also been added.

Shawnee State Park is open year-round, with the practical camping season running roughly April through October. Spring brings strong wildlife activity: birding is a highlight in late April and early May as migratory songbirds move through southern Ohio, and warbler diversity in the surrounding forest is notable.
Summer is the busiest stretch, when the lakes, beach, and marina see steady use and weekend sites can fill early. Late spring and early summer tend to be the wettest part of the year in this part of Ohio, so travelers should pack for the occasional thunderstorm. Early fall is a strong shoulder-season choice for cooler hikes and thinner crowds, with color typically peaking in mid to late October.
Winter is quiet. Freezing temperatures can shut off water at the dump station and campground taps, and winter storms occasionally make the ridge roads tricky, so calling the park office to check conditions before driving in is prudent.
How to book campgrounds near Rosemount
State-park sites at Shawnee State Park are booked through the Ohio State Parks system at reserveohio.com or by calling (866) 644-6727. Reservations may be made up to six months in advance, and popular summer weekends at both the Turkey Creek and Ohio River campgrounds can fill well before the arrival date.
Private parks handle their own reservations directly. Big Bear Lake Family Resort, Lazy Village Campground and RV Park, and Holiday Point Marina and Campground each book by phone or through their own websites. Primitive equestrian camping is available in the adjacent Shawnee State Forest, which is the operating context for Bens Happy Trails Horsemens Camp.
For summer holiday weekends, book as early as the window opens and keep a backup park in mind.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Rosemount is hilly and heavily wooded. A large, shaded campground sits in the hills of Shawnee State Park near Roosevelt Lake, while a separate campground is located near the marina on the Ohio River, giving RV travelers a choice between forested sites and open river views. Electric and non-electric sites and two camper cabins are available in the main campground.
Private resorts in the area lean family-oriented. Big Bear Lake Family Resort offers spacious sites and cabins, with a sandy swimming beach, boat rentals, fishing, playgrounds, and a well-stocked camp store.
Cell service can be spotty in the deeper forest sections, so download maps before arrival. Wildlife is active: expect deer, turkey, and squirrels around sites, and store food accordingly.
