Campgrounds and RV parks near Donora, PA

The Great Allegheny Passage runs through the Mon Valley, giving cyclists a paved, mostly flat route between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Maryland. Local rail-trails such as the Montour Trail and Five Star Trail connect to it and are easy add-ons for a rest-day ride from any of the nearby campgrounds. Pittsburgh is a short drive north for the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, PNC Park, and the Duquesne Incline. Southeast, Ohiopyle State Park offers Class III and IV whitewater on the Youghiogheny, a natural waterslide popular with families, and rock climbing on the sandstone bluffs. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob sit within an hour's drive and both accept advance tour bookings, which are worth reserving before arrival in peak months.

The reliable camping window in southwestern Pennsylvania runs from late April through October. May is the wettest month at the Donora station, so early-season trips should plan for muddy sites and unsettled weather. June through August brings warm, humid days with highs typically in the low 80s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Fall is the strongest overall season. September and October deliver cooler nights, drier air, and hardwood color across the Laurel Highlands, and campgrounds along the Youghiogheny book up quickly on weekends through mid-October. Peak stays require a two-night minimum on summer weekends at Pennsylvania state parks, and Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle operates from April through mid-December. Winters are cold, cloudy, and snowy, with January averaging highs near freezing. Most private campgrounds shift to limited or seasonal operations, though the Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey stays open year-round for RV travelers with heated rigs.

The immediate Donora area is river-valley terrain: winding two-lane roads, steep grades in places, and small towns rather than a resort strip. Large motorhomes should check access notes for hilly campgrounds and for the access roads into Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle, which are windy and steep in sections. Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups, Wi-Fi of varying quality, laundry, and a camp store. Kentuck Campground provides flush toilets, hot showers, some electric sites, and a dump station, but no full hookups. Cell coverage is generally solid near Donora and Pittsburgh but can drop in the deeper hollows of the Laurel Highlands. Bring layers year-round. Valley fog is common on summer mornings, thunderstorms build fast on hot afternoons, and mountain weather changes quickly once you head toward Ohiopyle.
