Campgrounds near Dunbar, Pennsylvania
Dunbar sits in Fayette County in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, minutes from the Youghiogheny River gorge and the town of Ohiopyle. Ohiopyle State Park is situated on 20,500 acres between Chestnut Ridge and Laurel Hill in Dunbar, Henry Clay, and Stewart Townships, with more than 14 miles of the Youghiogheny River gorge passing through the park. That geography shapes the local camping scene: most RV-friendly options cluster along PA Route 381 and the ridgelines above the river.
Renters have a mix of state-park and private options within a short drive. The campground inside Ohiopyle State Park is the anchor public facility, and private parks including The Blue Canoe RV Resort, Benner's Meadow Run Camping and Cabins, Scarlett Knob Campground Inc, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort fill in the rest with full-hookup sites, cabins, and family amenities.
Ohiopyle State Park is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh or about a 75-minute drive away, and PA 381 runs through the park. That keeps Dunbar within easy reach for RV renters coming from Pittsburgh, Morgantown, or the Turnpike corridor.
Things to do near Dunbar
The Youghiogheny River is the main draw. The river offers whitewater rafting and kayaking through thrilling rapids, and it also has excellent spots for trout fishing along its edge. The main whitewater rafting season is April to October, but the falls are only open when the area is staffed, so check dates in advance. Guided raft trips launch from outfitters in Ohiopyle village, and experienced boaters can self-launch after checking in at the visitor center.
Hiking and cycling are the other pillars. Ohiopyle serves as the southern terminus for the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. For bicyclists, there are 27 miles of the Great Allegheny Passage in the park, offering flat, family-friendly riding along the river.
Architecture fans can pair camping with visits to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, both nearby.

Camping in the Dunbar area is strongly seasonal. Camping is seasonal at Ohiopyle, and Kentuck Campground opens from April through mid-December, and most private parks follow a similar spring-to-fall pattern. Deep-winter RV camping options are limited, and services such as dump stations and water hookups are typically shut off once freezing weather sets in.
Summer is the peak. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill quickly, especially around July 4, and river traffic on the Yough peaks alongside the campgrounds. Crowds are inevitable at popular trails and viewpoints, and visitors who want to dodge the masses should avoid summer and holiday weekends.
Shoulder seasons offer the best balance. Late April into June brings full waterfalls, cooler temperatures, and easier bookings, while September and October deliver crisp days and strong fall color across the Laurel Ridge. River levels can rise quickly after heavy rain in any month, so early-spring trips should watch the forecast and gauge readings before launching.
How to book campgrounds near Dunbar
Public and private campgrounds use different systems. For Ohiopyle State Park, reservations for 207 campsites, six cottages, and four yurts go through the Pennsylvania State Parks website; campsite reservations open 11 months in advance, and cottages and yurts must be reserved a minimum of three days in advance. Peak summer weekends and holiday windows are often claimed the moment the 11-month window opens.
Private parks such as The Blue Canoe RV Resort, Benner's Meadow Run Camping and Cabins, Scarlett Knob Campground Inc, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort book directly through their own websites or phone lines, and full-hookup pull-throughs sell out fastest for holiday weekends.
There are no admission fees for Pennsylvania state parks, but campsite booking fees apply. If a state-park site shows sold out, cancellation-alert services can help catch late openings.
What to expect at Dunbar campgrounds
Sites in the Dunbar area range from wooded state-park loops to full-hookup private resorts. Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle offers 200 campsites with flush toilets, warm showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and some electric hook-ups. Private parks generally add water and sewer hookups, laundry, and pools or planned activities aimed at families.
Expect hilly, wooded terrain and narrow rural roads on the approach. SR 2019 is very steep, and large RVs should avoid this road and take PA 40 to SR 2010 (Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Rd.). Cell service is spotty in the river gorge but returns on the ridges.
Fires are only permitted in grills and fire rings. Alcohol restrictions apply as with all Pennsylvania state parks, and pets are permitted in designated areas. Private campgrounds set their own rules, so check policies for pets, quiet hours, and generator use when booking.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dunbar%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Dunbar, PA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dunbar, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, so your standard non-commercial license covers Class A, Class B, and Class C rigs on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring your valid home-country license, and an International Driving Permit is recommended if your license is not in English. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick and straightforward the process is.

Yes. Every RV rental in Dunbar, PA booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive the winding roads of the Laurel Highlands with confidence. The protection plan covers accidental physical damage to the RV up to the selected coverage limit, and you choose your coverage tier during checkout (it is not set by the host), so you can pick the level that fits your trip. Coverage is provided through RVezy's program rather than a personal auto policy, but it gives you meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens between Dunbar and Ohiopyle State Park. Pro tip: review each tier carefully at booking. The mid-tier plan is a popular choice for most families heading out on a Pennsylvania RV trip.

There is a money-back grace period right after booking, with additional refund tiers based on how far out you are from your trip start date. Special circumstances such as natural disasters or major weather events affecting the Laurel Highlands may also be considered. Because Pennsylvania weather can shift quickly in spring and fall, it is reassuring to know your booking has built-in flexibility. Pro tip: book your RV early to secure your preferred rig, then finalize campground reservations at Ohiopyle State Park's Kentuck Campground once your travel dates feel solid.

Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or breed notes, and pack a towel for after-the-waterfall shake-offs near Cucumber Falls. Your dog will thank you.

You skip the stress of towing or maneuvering a motorhome on PA Route 381's curves and start your trip already set up. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service and their delivery radius. Pro tip: campervan rental Dunbar guests often combine delivery with a GAP trail bike day. Park the van, ride to Ohiopyle, and repeat.

Summer (June to August) is whitewater rafting season on the Youghiogheny with highs in the 80s, ideal for cooling off at the natural waterslides. Fall (mid-September to late October) is the visual peak, with Laurel Highlands foliage drawing crowds and crisp days in the 50s to mid-60s. Kentuck Campground typically operates from spring through mid-December. Pro tip: mid-to-late October is usually peak color, so book your RV at least 8 weeks ahead for that window.

You can also message your host directly. Most are local to Fayette County and know the area's mechanics, tow operators, and dealerships. Pro tip: save the RVezy support contact in your phone before you leave the driveway and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup. It speeds things up if you ever need assistance on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dunbar RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel within the U.S. is generally allowed, and Dunbar's location makes it perfect for a multi-state RV road trip from Dunbar. You are roughly 15 minutes from the Maryland border, 30 minutes from West Virginia, and within easy reach of Ohio, so loops through Deep Creek Lake, Coopers Rock, or Cuyahoga Valley National Park are very doable. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the specific host and insurance, so message them through the listing before booking if that is your plan. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a 4-day West Virginia and Maryland triangle loop from Dunbar is one of the most underrated motorhome rental Dunbar trips you can do.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for around Dunbar?
Realistic expectations make budgeting easy. Class C motorhomes around Dunbar typically average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class A rigs 6 to 8 mpg, campervans 16 to 20 mpg, and tow setups with travel trailers usually 10 to 14 mpg depending on your tow vehicle. Pennsylvania gas prices tend to run slightly above the national average, with stations in Uniontown and Connellsville (both under 15 minutes from Dunbar) usually a few cents cheaper than the small stations right by Ohiopyle. Pro tip: top up in Uniontown on PA Route 51 before you head into the Laurel Highlands. The closer you get to the state park, the fewer (and pricier) the pumps become. Diesel is widely available along US Route 40.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Dunbar?
For Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park, book as far out as you can. Reservations are available up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and electric sites for summer weekends, July 4th, and peak fall foliage weekends often fill within days of opening. Private campgrounds like Yogi Bear's Jellystone at Mill Run and Tall Oaks in Confluence are a little more forgiving but still tend to fill 2 to 3 months ahead for prime weekends. Weekdays and shoulder season are much easier. Pro tip: if Kentuck is fully booked, set up a cancellation alert through the reservation site. Sites open up surprisingly often as plans change.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park/stay.htmlWhat are the local driving conditions like around Dunbar?
Dunbar driving is scenic and very manageable in an RV. The main roads (PA Route 711, US Route 119, and US Route 40 over Summit Mountain) are well-maintained, two-lane, and winding rather than steep, so just take it slow on curves and use lower gears descending toward Ohiopyle on PA 381. There is no big-city traffic, no urban height clearances to worry about, and many overlooks have RV-friendly pull-offs. Winter (December through March) can bring snow and ice on the higher ridges, so most rentals operate April through November. Pro tip: avoid narrow back roads if you are in anything over 25 feet. Stick to Route 381 north out of Ohiopyle and you will be fine.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Dunbar offer?
You will find solid hookups close by. Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park has flush toilets, hot showers, a sanitary dump station, potable water fill stations, and many sites with electric service (no individual sewer at standard sites, but the dump station handles it). Private parks like Benner's Meadow Run and Tall Oaks offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), Wi-Fi, and laundry. For dumping or filling water on the road, the Ohiopyle State Park dump station is the closest and most reliable option to Dunbar. Pro tip: fill your fresh tank before leaving Dunbar. Mountain water pressure varies, and arriving with a full tank means you can dry-camp anywhere along the GAP trail.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park/stay.htmlWhat is included inside a typical RV rental in Dunbar?
More than you would expect. Most RV rentals in Dunbar come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa for extra sleepers, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (furnace and AC), and seatbelts for travel. Many hosts also include a TV, outdoor speaker, and basic kitchen kit (pots, utensils, coffee maker). Wi-Fi and generators are common add-ons. Cell signal can be patchy deep in Ohiopyle State Park, so if you need connectivity for work, look for listings advertising a Wi-Fi booster. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps 4, 6, or 8 to match your group. Family RV trip Dunbar bookings often fit grandparents, parents, and kids comfortably in one Class C.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dunbar%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Dunbar RV rental?
Plenty, and they make a real difference. Common add-ons for RV rental Pennsylvania bookings include bike racks (perfect for the Great Allegheny Passage), kayak or SUP racks, outdoor furniture, generators, propane refills, linen and towel packages, and stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Dunbar, Connellsville, or Uniontown, and many hosts offer delivery directly to Kentuck Campground or Fallingwater-area campsites for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some hosts including 100 to 150 free miles per day. Pro tip: if you are planning to ride the GAP trail, ask the host about their bike rack add-on at booking. It saves you renting bikes separately in Ohiopyle's high-season rush.
gaptrail.org/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Dunbar on RVezy, your trip total is charged through the platform, so there is no cash or e-transfer between you and the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically a few hundred to around a thousand dollars depending on the RV) and released after your trip as long as the RV is returned in the same condition. Avoid issues by snapping photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff, sticking to paved roads, and giving the rig a quick clean before return. Pro tip: review the host's mileage, generator-hour, and pet policies in the listing before booking. Knowing the rules up front means your deposit comes back in full and your Laurel Highlands trip ends on a high note.
