Campgrounds near East Uniontown, Pennsylvania
East Uniontown sits in Fayette County at the western edge of the Laurel Highlands, putting RV renters within a short drive of the Youghiogheny River gorge, Ohiopyle State Park, and a cluster of private campgrounds built around whitewater, waterfalls, and the Great Allegheny Passage rail trail.
Most RV-friendly options fall into two groups. Private resorts such as Benner's Meadow Run Camping and Cabins, The Blue Canoe RV Resort, Tall Oaks Campground, and Scarlett Knob Campground Inc offer full or partial hookups, showers, and family amenities. The state-run option, Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park offers 200+ established sites with flush toilets, hot showers, potable water, fire rings, and picnic tables, with select sites providing electric hookups but no full hookups.
The area works well as a single-base trip. From East Uniontown, drivers reach Ohiopyle village in roughly 20 to 30 minutes on PA Route 381, and Fallingwater is less than 9 miles away, Kentuck Knob about 8 miles, and Fort Necessity National Battlefield 5 miles from the park, making the region a practical basecamp for families combining hiking, biking, and rafting.
Things to do near East Uniontown
Ohiopyle State Park anchors the outdoor menu. The Youghiogheny River Gorge has some of the busiest whitewater rafting runs east of the Mississippi with class III and IV rapids, with the Lower Yough popular for guided family rafts and the Middle Yough suited to calmer float trips. The Great Allegheny Passage runs directly through Ohiopyle, giving riders a flat, crushed-limestone trail toward Confluence or Connellsville.
On foot, families can walk to Ohiopyle Falls and Cucumber Falls, or take longer routes like the Ferncliff Peninsula loop. Ohiopyle serves as the southern terminus for the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, which traverses the Laurel Ridge toward Johnstown.
Off-park attractions include Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, both timed-ticket tours, along with Fort Necessity, Nemacolin's activities center, and Living Treasures Wild Animal Park. Rainy-day options cluster along Route 40 in Uniontown.

The camping season in this part of Pennsylvania is not year-round. Kentuck Campground is open from April to mid-December and requires paid reservations made with Ohiopyle State Park in advance, and most private RV parks in the surrounding area follow a similar spring-to-fall window, with a small number of sites kept open for shoulder-season hunters and skiers.
Summer is peak. July and August draw the heaviest rafting crowds, and weekend sites at Ohiopyle can book out months ahead. Late spring brings high water and cool nights, good for waterfalls but chilly for tent add-ons. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid-October across the Laurel Ridge and is the second busy window for reservations.
Winter operations are limited. The Kentuck campground is closed mid-December through end of February. Snow and ice close some park roads and trails, and nearby ski areas at Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, and Laurel Mountain drive lodging demand rather than campground use. RV renters visiting between December and March should confirm hookups, water availability, and road access directly with the campground before booking.
How to book campgrounds in the area
Ohiopyle State Park sites are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Campsite reservations open 11 months in advance, and cottages and yurts must be reserved a minimum of three days in advance. Popular summer weekends often fill within days of the booking window opening.
Private campgrounds including Benner's Meadow Run Camping and Cabins, The Blue Canoe RV Resort, Tall Oaks Campground, and Scarlett Knob Campground Inc take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends, Memorial Day through Labor Day, and October foliage weekends should be booked well ahead. For flexible travel dates, cancellation-alert services can help secure last-minute Ohiopyle sites.
What to expect on-site
Site types vary widely. Private resorts near Ohiopyle typically offer pull-through and back-in RV sites with water, electric, and sewer, along with tent sites, cabins, pools, playgrounds, and camp stores. Expect wooded, rolling terrain rather than open flat pads, and check length and slide-out limits before booking a larger rental.
Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle is more rustic. Campers have access to flush toilets, warm showers, and some electric hook-ups. There is no sewer at individual sites, but a dump station is on site. SR 2019 is very steep, so large RVs should avoid this road and take PA 40 to SR 2010, the Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road. Cell service is patchy in the gorge, and alcohol restrictions apply as with all Pennsylvania state parks.
Bears, raccoons, and deer are active, so food should be stored in the RV or hard-sided containers overnight.
