Campgrounds and RV parks near Fairchance, PA

Ohiopyle is the anchor activity. The Youghiogheny River Gorge has some of the busiest whitewater rafting runs east of the Mississippi with class III and IV rapids, and hiking trails total 79 miles, including the 27-mile multi-use Youghiogheny River Trail, shared by bikers and cross-country skiers. Families often combine a raft trip with the natural waterslides at Meadow Run and a stop at the Ohiopyle Falls overlook. Just up Chestnut Ridge, Laurel Caverns State Park sits on 426 acres in Fayette County, and its calcareous sandstone cavern system is the largest in Pennsylvania. The underground caverns are open from mid-April through the last weekend of October and close in winter for bat hibernation. Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, both Frank Lloyd Wright homes, are tourable by advance ticket. Fort Necessity National Battlefield preserves the site of George Washington's first military engagement. In winter, Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, and Laurel Mountain ski areas sit within about an hour, making Fairchance a shoulder-season base for skiing plus lodging in an RV park with hookups.

The main outdoor season runs from April through October. Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle is open from April to mid-December and requires paid reservations in advance. Late spring brings the highest water levels and the most technical rafting on the Youghiogheny; late summer runs are typically milder and better for families. Summer weekends are the peak. Ohiopyle draws heavy day-use crowds, and campsites near the river fill early. Weekdays in June and September are the sweet spot for RV travelers who want cooler temperatures and more open sites. Fall foliage in the Laurel Highlands typically peaks from mid to late October, drawing another wave of visitors to the ridges and river gorge. Winter is cold and snowy in the Laurel Highlands. Many private campgrounds close or reduce services after fall, while in the colder months, cross-country skiing and snowmobile riding are available across the park on designated trails.

Sites here are wooded and often sloped. At Kentuck Campground, Ohiopyle State Park offers 200 campsites with flush toilets, warm showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and some electric hook-ups. The campground has 27 walk-to sites that require a short hike from the vehicle to the campsite. The campground has a sanitary dump station and shower houses. Full hookups are limited to the campground host site. A few practical notes: alcohol is prohibited in Pennsylvania state parks. SR 2019 is very steep; large RVs should avoid this road and take PA 40 to SR 2010 (Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Rd.), follow it for eight miles to a stop sign, then go straight to the campground. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, so download maps before arrival.
