Campgrounds and RV parks near Fairhope, PA

The Youghiogheny River corridor is the main draw. Ohiopyle State Park offers access to the Great Allegheny Passage rail trail and to whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Youghiogheny, known for Class III and IV rapids. The park is also the southern terminus for the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, which traverses the Laurel Ridge north toward Johnstown. Guests staying at Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey are positioned for city day trips into Pittsburgh, its pro sports and amusement parks, and area attractions such as Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. The Blue Canoe RV Resort sits between the Youghiogheny River and the GAP trail and adds on-site pools, kayak and tube rentals, and direct trail access for cyclists. Closer to Fairhope, the Monongahela River, short drives to Kennywood and Idlewild, and Laurel Caverns round out the family options.

Southwestern Pennsylvania has four distinct seasons. Summer is peak camping season, with warm days and afternoon thunderstorms common. The National Weather Service Pittsburgh office notes a warm-season precipitation spike from May through August, tied to thunderstorm activity when heavy downpours are common. Weekends at popular parks book out well in advance, so reserve early for July and August stays. Spring and fall are quieter shoulder seasons with cooler nights and lower crowds. Fall foliage in the Laurel Highlands typically peaks in mid-October. Many private parks operate on a seasonal calendar, and The Blue Canoe RV Resort runs a seasonal schedule from spring through mid-fall. On the public side, Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park is open from April to mid-December, with advance reservations recommended. Winters are cold and snowy. From November through April, the Pittsburgh area can remain below freezing all day, with about 32 days a year when temperatures never rise above 32°F. A few private parks maintain limited winter operations, but most close for the season.

Expect a mix of highway-adjacent overnight parks and destination resorts. Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey works well as a stopover or base camp for Pittsburgh day trips, with pull-through sites and a seasonal pool. Fox Den Acres provides full-hookup campsites, accommodates big rigs with pull-through sites, and offers restrooms, showers, and laundry. The Blue Canoe RV Resort trends toward a family-resort experience. It sits directly on the Youghiogheny River with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer, and accommodates large rigs. The access road descends toward the river on a narrow two-lane grade, so large towables should plan a slow, geared-down approach. Terrain in the Laurel Highlands is hilly, so plan routes carefully and expect variable cell coverage in the deeper valleys.
