Camping near Franklin, Pennsylvania
Franklin sits in Venango County at the confluence of French Creek and the Allegheny River in northwestern Pennsylvania. The town is a practical base for RV travelers headed to Oil Creek State Park, Two Mile Run County Park, and the Allegheny River corridor, with a small historic downtown and full services for restocking supplies.
Private RV parks in the immediate area include Oil Creek Family Campground and Gaslight Campgrounds, both within short driving range. Family-oriented resorts sit slightly further out: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Kozy Rest cater to travelers with kids, and Meadville KOA Journey offers a standard KOA layout to the north along I-79.
Oil Creek State Park itself does not run a drive-in campground for RVs, so most rental rigs stay at the private grounds listed above and use the state park for day-use hiking, biking, and paddling. Terrain is rolling forested hills between roughly 1,000 and 1,400 feet, and roads leading to some rural parks can be narrow or steep after rain.
Things to do around Franklin
Oil Creek State Park is the anchor attraction, with the 36-mile Gerard Hiking Trail looping the park and a paved multi-use bike trail running the valley floor between Petroleum Centre and Titusville. Paddlers float Oil Creek and the Allegheny River, and the Drake Well Museum at the north end of the park interprets the first commercial oil well in the United States.
Two Mile Run County Park adds a 144-acre lake, nearly 38 miles of trails, boating, and horseback riding. In Franklin itself, families cycle the Allegheny River Trail and the Samuel Justus Trail, which connect to Oil City.
Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park properties add on-site pools, mini-golf, and structured kids' activities for families who want a resort feel between day trips.

Most private campgrounds in the Franklin area operate from spring through mid-fall, with Oil Creek Family Campground typically open May through October. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with mid-summer weekends and the Applefest weekend in Franklin in early October booking out weeks ahead.
Spring brings unsettled weather and higher water on Oil Creek, which is good for paddling but cool for tenting. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and biting insects are common along the creek bottom. Early fall is the strongest window for foliage on the Allegheny plateau, generally peaking in the second and third weeks of October.
Winter camping options are limited. Pennsylvania State Park facilities that stay open year-round run on reduced services, and most private RV parks near Franklin close down for the season by late October or early November. Snow and freezing nights are routine from December into March.
How to book an RV site near Franklin
Private campgrounds in the Franklin area, including Oil Creek Family Campground and Gaslight Campgrounds, take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Holiday weekends and July weekends fill first, and cabins and full-hookup pull-throughs tend to go earliest. Deposits and multi-night minimums are common on holiday weekends.
Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park and Meadville KOA Journey use their own brand reservation portals, and both allow booking months in advance.
For Pennsylvania State Park facilities, reservations run through the state's reservation system operated by the DCNR Bureau of State Parks. The booking window opens up to eleven months ahead of arrival at noon Eastern Time, and campsite reservations can be made up to noon of the day of arrival. Two Mile Run County Park handles its own bookings through the Venango County parks office; travelers should confirm current lead times and minimum-stay rules directly with the park.
What to expect on-site
Private RV parks in the Franklin area generally offer 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service, water, and sewer at full-hookup sites, along with restrooms, showers, and a camp store. Oil Creek Family Campground has close to 100 sites with a mix of back-in and pull-through configurations that accommodate larger rigs, plus a heated pool, disc golf, and a stocked catch-and-release pond.
Cell coverage across the valleys is inconsistent, and WiFi at campgrounds is best treated as light use only. Approach roads to some rural properties are gravel and can rut after heavy rain, so low-clearance tow vehicles should check conditions before arrival.
Quiet hours, leashed-pet rules, and fires-in-rings-only policies are standard across both private and public grounds in the area.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Franklin%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Franklin, Pennsylvania?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Franklin, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement for any of the motorhomes or travel trailers you'll find on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, and campervan rentals around Franklin. You do need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxIs my RV rental in Franklin protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RV rental in Franklin, PA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull onto Route 322. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during booking (not the host), so you can pick what feels right for your family RV trip in Franklin. It provides serious peace of mind for first-time renters heading into Oil Creek State Park or up to Cook Forest. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at pickup, just like with a rental car.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Franklin RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a consistent cancellation policy across every rent an RV in Franklin booking, including a grace period right after you book where you can get your money back. After that, refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip and circumstances like severe weather on Interstate 80 or a natural disaster in western PA. Hosts do not set cancellation terms, so you do not need to negotiate listing-by-listing. If your plans for an Allegheny River float trip change, reach out to RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. Booking early gives you the most flexibility.

Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Franklin is easy to book on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers whose owners welcome dogs (and often cats). Franklin is a great dog town: the paved Allegheny River Trail starts right downtown and is leashed-dog friendly, and Two Mile Run County Park on Beach Road allows pets in its campground and on its trails. Cook Forest State Park, about an hour east, also welcomes leashed pets on most trails. Message the host before booking if you have a large breed or more than one pet, and ask about their cleaning expectations.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/CookForestStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Franklin?
Yes, RV delivery in Franklin is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the unit directly to Two Mile Run County Park, the Oil Creek State Park area, or a private address in Venango County, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery when you search rent an RV in Franklin, then message hosts with your campsite address for an exact quote. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location, so closer pickups mean lower costs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Franklin%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow do mileage limits work, and how far can I drive from Franklin?
Mileage policies are set by each host on RVezy, and you will see the exact daily allowance and per-mile overage rate on the listing page before you book. From Franklin you are roughly 75 miles north of Pittsburgh, about 80 miles south of Erie and Presque Isle State Park, around 45 miles from Cook Forest, and about 140 miles to Niagara Falls, NY. If you are planning a big loop, filter for unlimited mileage listings, or message hosts about a custom package.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007533Where are the best campgrounds near Franklin, PA?
You are spoiled for choice for RV camping in Franklin. Two Mile Run County Park on Beach Road is the closest option, with a mix of full-hookup, electric, and primitive sites on a ridge above a swimmable reservoir. Kalyumet Campground in Lucinda offers full hookups and family amenities. Cook Forest State Park Campground, about an hour east, is consistently rated one of Pennsylvania's best and is surrounded by old-growth white pines. Allegheny National Forest also has multiple RV-friendly campgrounds within easy driving distance. Reserve early for summer weekends, especially around Applefest in early October.
venangocountypa.gov/171/Things-to-DoWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Franklin?
Franklin shines from late May through mid-October, and each season has its own personality. Summer (June to August) brings highs in the low 80s F and is ideal for swimming at Two Mile Run, kayaking the Allegheny, and biking the Samuel Justus Trail. Fall is arguably the best season: late September through mid-October delivers spectacular foliage along Oil Creek and the famous Applefest weekend in downtown Franklin. Spring (April to May) is quieter and great for trout fishing on French Creek. Winters are cold (often in the 20s F with snow), but a few four-season hosts offer winterized motorhome rental in Franklin for snowshoeing trips.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay picking one up in Franklin?
You'll be just fine, and Franklin is actually a great place for your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and the holding tanks, and you can text or call them throughout your trip with questions. The roads around Franklin are mostly two-lane rural highways like US-322 and PA-8 with gentle grades and light traffic outside of rush hour, making them friendlier than big-city driving. If you'd rather skip the driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery and setup directly to your campsite. Take it slow, leave extra following distance, and you'll find your groove within an hour.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Franklin trip?
You are never on your own. Every campervan rental in Franklin and every motorhome booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on PA-8 or a dead battery at Two Mile Run is just one phone call away. Your host is also your first text-message lifeline for quirky questions (like how to relight the water heater), and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Franklin has auto-parts stores and full-service garages in town, plus additional options along Route 322, so common fixes are quick. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trips from Franklin, PA?
An RV road trip from Franklin opens up some of the Northeast's best scenery. Head east about 45 miles to Cook Forest State Park for old-growth hemlocks and the Clarion River. Drive about 80 miles north to Erie and Presque Isle State Park for Lake Erie beaches and sunsets. Pittsburgh is just 75 miles south for a city-meets-rivers contrast. Push roughly 140 miles north and you can park near Niagara Falls State Park in New York. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with some hosts (coverage varies), but Mexico is not covered. Always confirm international plans in writing with your host before booking.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/PresqueIsleStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan ahead and gas will not surprise you. Class C motorhomes around Franklin typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and tow vehicles pulling a travel trailer about 10 to 14 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices tend to run higher than the national average due to state fuel taxes, so budget conservatively when planning. There are convenient fueling stops at the Sheetz in Franklin and several truck-friendly stations along Interstate 80 (about 15 minutes south). Diesel pumps with high clearance are easiest at travel plazas off I-80.
eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_pri_gnd_dcus_spa_w.htmHow far in advance should I book a campsite near Franklin?
For Pennsylvania state park campgrounds (such as Oil Creek-area sites and Cook Forest), book through the official Pennsylvania DCNR reservation system as soon as your dates are firm. Sites open up to 11 months in advance, and the most popular full-hookup spots for summer weekends and Applefest in October typically sell out 4 to 6 months ahead. Two Mile Run County Park, run by Venango County, takes reservations directly through the park office and tends to fill on holiday weekends. Midweek arrivals are much easier to snag last-minute. Pro tip: pair an early-season weekend (late May) with a state park reservation for the best chance at lakefront sites.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Franklin?
Driving in and around Franklin is genuinely RV-friendly. The town sits at the confluence of the Allegheny River and French Creek, so most routes follow gentle valley grades rather than steep mountain passes. US-322, PA-8, and Interstate 80 are the main corridors, and all handle big rigs comfortably. Watch for a few things: low-clearance railroad underpasses in older neighborhoods (stick to designated truck routes), winter snow and ice from December through March (PennDOT plows quickly but pack chains if you visit cold-weather), and deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads. Downtown Franklin's brick streets are charming but tight, so park at the lot near Fountain Park rather than trying to navigate Liberty Street in a big motorhome.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Franklin offer for RVs?
Campgrounds near Franklin are well set up for RVs. Two Mile Run County Park offers electric and full-hookup sites, a dump station, potable water fill, hot showers, and a swim beach on the reservoir. Many private campgrounds in the region include full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Cook Forest area campgrounds typically include 30/50-amp electric, water, and dump stations, though full sewer at every site is less common. Pennsylvania State Park campgrounds generally have centralized dump stations and water fill rather than full hookups, so plan a quick dump on the way out. If you need to dump mid-trip, Two Mile Run accepts non-campers for a small fee.
venangocountypa.gov/171/Things-to-DoWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Franklin?
Most RVs on RVezy in the Franklin area come ready to camp. Expect a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette or bunks for kids, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, a propane furnace, and seatbelts for travel-ready passengers. Many rigs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, and outdoor camp chairs. Wi-Fi and generators are common add-ons, which is handy at Cook Forest where cell service is patchy. Each listing has a detailed amenity list, photos, and a sleeps-count filter, so you can match your family RV trip in Franklin to the exact setup you want. Ask the host about linens and kitchen kits at booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Franklin%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Franklin hosts on RVezy offer a range of add-ons that can make your trip easier: linen and towel packages, stocked kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, portable grills, bike racks, generators, and even kayaks (handy for the Allegheny River right downtown). Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Franklin or Oil City, and many hosts will deliver to your campground for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies, generator hours, and pet fees are all spelled out on the listing page before you book. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linens package if it is your first time, and you will arrive to a campsite that is ready to enjoy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Franklin%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Franklin, PA, RVezy processes your payment through the platform (no cash, no Venmo, no off-platform deals). A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup; amounts vary by RV and are clearly shown on each listing, separate from your booking payment. As long as you return the RV in the same condition (clean, with tanks emptied if required, and within mileage), the deposit is released back to you, typically within a few days of trip end. Always do a walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, and keep all communication inside the RVezy app.
