Camping near Greenock, Pennsylvania
Greenock is a small community in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, sitting along the Youghiogheny River southeast of downtown Pittsburgh. It is a census-designated place, and the area works well as a base for RV travelers who want proximity to Pittsburgh, the Great Allegheny Passage, and the Laurel Highlands without staying in the city itself.
Most RV parks in the region cluster southeast of Pittsburgh along the I-70 and Pennsylvania Turnpike corridor. Options within roughly an hour of Greenock include Wallace Trailer Sales and Court, Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey, Fox Den Acres Campgrounds, The Blue Canoe RV Resort, and Mountain Top Campground. These commercial parks handle most Pittsburgh-area RV traffic because the closest Pennsylvania state park with modern campsites, Ohiopyle, sits farther south in the Laurel Highlands.
The Great Allegheny Passage borders the edge of Greenock and follows the Youghiogheny River, where residents jog, bike, and walk along the water. That trail access and the river frontage are the main draws for campers choosing this side of the Pittsburgh metro.
Things to do around Greenock
The Youghiogheny River and the Great Allegheny Passage define most local recreation. In the warmer months, the river draws paddlers for kayaking, tubing, and rafting. Cyclists can pick up the paved rail-trail near Boston or West Newton and ride toward Pittsburgh or south toward Cumberland, Maryland.
Downtown Pittsburgh is a short drive for families wanting pro sports, museums, and the zoo. Campgrounds in this corridor put visitors roughly 45 minutes from the city, with easy access to the Laurel Highlands, golf, local wineries, and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater.
For a full day trip, Ohiopyle State Park sits at the southern reach of Laurel Ridge and covers roughly 20,500 acres, with the Youghiogheny River providing some of the best whitewater boating in the eastern United States. Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob are within the same loop and pair well with a longer camping stay.

Summer is peak camping season in southwestern Pennsylvania. July is the hottest month, with an average high near 85°F and a low around 65°F, and the highest average rainfall typically occurs in June with an average of 3.4 inches. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so RV renters should plan for wet awnings and muddy sites during June and July stays. Whitewater releases on the Youghiogheny and pool openings at private parks make this the busiest window, so reserve months ahead for July 4 and Labor Day weekends.
Spring and fall are quieter and often more comfortable. Fall foliage in the Laurel Highlands typically peaks in mid-October, and cool nights start early, so RV renters should confirm furnace propane before arrival.
Winter is cold and largely off-season. From November to April, Pittsburgh can remain below freezing all day long, and the city typically has 32 days a year when the temperature never rises above 32°F. Many private campgrounds in the area close by late October and reopen around May 1, matching the season posted at Fox Den Acres Campgrounds.

Dan’s camper was perfect for our weekend camping trip. It was clean, organized, and fit our family of 4 with plenty of room. Dan was very helpful at pick up and drop off getting everything hooked up and offloaded.

Fox Den Acres Campgrounds lists 350 sites, accepts reservations, and is open seasonally from May 1 through October 31. Summer weekends and holiday weeks at private parks in the corridor fill early, so lock in dates as soon as trip plans firm up.
For state parks in the region, reservations run through the Pennsylvania DCNR system. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved up to 11 months in advance of the arrival date, with a limited number of first-come, first-served sites. A 2-night stay is required on weekend reservations during the summer, and the stay maximum is 14 consecutive nights from Memorial Day to Labor Day and 21 consecutive nights the rest of the year. Reservations can be made online or by calling 888-727-2757.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around Greenock is hilly, with narrow secondary roads winding down to the Youghiogheny. RV renters in larger rigs should stick to marked truck routes and avoid steep local shortcuts. One reviewer at Fox Den Acres Campgrounds described it as about as close as you can camp to Pittsburgh in a big rig, roughly 45 minutes in good traffic, and noted that entering the campground requires descending a very steep driveway.
Expect a mix of long-term seasonal sites and short-stay pull-throughs at most private parks in the corridor. Cell coverage is generally reliable on major highways but can drop in the river valleys. Bring cash for laundry and coin-operated showers, as several area campgrounds still use them.
Bears are uncommon this close to Pittsburgh, but raccoons and deer are frequent visitors. Store food inside the RV overnight and secure garbage in dumpsters rather than at the site.
