Campgrounds near Hopwood, Pennsylvania
Hopwood sits at the base of Chestnut Ridge in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, just southeast of Uniontown along US Route 40. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of the Laurel Highlands, Ohiopyle State Park, Fort Necessity National Battlefield, and the Youghiogheny River corridor. Most nearby campgrounds cluster along the ridgeline and river valleys within roughly 15 to 30 minutes of town.
Options in the immediate area include Benner's Meadow Run Camping and Cabins, Tall Oaks Campground, The Blue Canoe RV Resort, Scarlett Knob Campground Inc, and Sand Springs Campground. These are privately operated parks with a mix of full-hookup, water and electric, and primitive tent sites. Cabins and seasonal sites are also common.
RV travelers typically use Hopwood as a base for whitewater rafting, mountain biking on the Great Allegheny Passage, and touring Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. The terrain is hilly, so travelers with longer rigs should check pull-through availability and road access before booking.
Things to do near Hopwood
Ohiopyle State Park is the main draw, offering Class III and IV whitewater on the Lower Yough, calmer trips on the Middle Yough, and cycling access to the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail that runs from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. Waterfalls at Ohiopyle Falls, Cucumber Falls, and the Meadow Run natural waterslides are within a short drive.
Historical stops include Fort Necessity National Battlefield, the site of George Washington's first military engagement, and the Braddock's Grave marker along the National Road. Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, both open for guided tours, are roughly 20 to 30 minutes north.
For families, Laurel Caverns offers guided cave tours and rappelling, while nearby state game lands and Forbes State Forest provide hiking, fishing, and hunting access.

The core RV season in this part of Pennsylvania runs from mid-April through late October. Ohiopyle State Park stays open year-round for day use, but most private campgrounds around Hopwood operate seasonally and close their water systems once overnight temperatures fall consistently below freezing. Rafting outfitters on the Youghiogheny generally run commercial trips from spring through mid-October, with water releases coordinated by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Summer is peak season. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill quickly, and holiday weekends often sell out several weeks in advance. Expect warm, humid days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, particularly in June and July.
Fall brings the strongest foliage color in the Laurel Highlands, typically peaking in the second and third weeks of October. Nights turn cold quickly at elevation. Winter camping is limited, with most private parks closed and only a small number of electric sites available in the region.
How to book campgrounds near Hopwood
Private campgrounds around Hopwood, including Benner's Meadow Run Camping and Cabins, Tall Oaks Campground, The Blue Canoe RV Resort, Scarlett Knob Campground Inc, and Sand Springs Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends should be booked well in advance, often two to three months out for prime sites.
Ohiopyle State Park's Kentuck Campground is reserved through the Pennsylvania state park system on the ReserveAmerica portal, with a booking window that opens up to eleven months ahead and a minimum of three days before arrival. Cancellation policies and minimum-night stays vary by park and by season, so read the fine print at checkout, especially for holiday weekends.
What to expect
Terrain around Hopwood is mountainous. US Route 40 climbs steeply up Summit Mountain east of town, and secondary roads to campgrounds and trailheads include tight curves and grades that can challenge larger motorhomes and long trailers. GPS routing is not always accurate for RVs, so confirm directions with the campground before arrival. Large rigs headed to Kentuck Campground should avoid SR 2019 and use PA 40 to SR 2010.
Cell service is spotty once travelers leave the main highways, particularly inside Ohiopyle State Park and along the river gorge. Most private campgrounds offer Wi-Fi at the office or common areas, but coverage at individual sites varies.
Black bears are present throughout the Laurel Highlands. Store food inside the RV or in hard-sided containers, and follow posted guidance on trash and coolers.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hopwood, PA?

Booking is low-risk, which is exactly how it should be. After that, refund amounts depend on how close you are to your trip start date. You'll see the exact policy laid out during checkout. Fort Necessity National Battlefield's outdoor grounds are also leash-friendly. Pro tip: message the host before you book to confirm pet fees and any cleaning expectations, so check-out is smooth and your pup is welcome back next time.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Hopwood?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Many Hopwood-area hosts offer RV delivery to Hopwood campgrounds and nearby destinations, including Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park, Benner's Meadow Run, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Mill Run. Your host drives the RV to your site, levels it, hooks up water and power, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys, so you can skip the stress of towing on PA-381's switchbacks. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, and check each listing for delivery radius and fees. It's the easiest way to start a Hopwood RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hopwood,PennsylvaniaHow far can I drive my Hopwood RV rental? Is mileage unlimited?
You've got real range from Hopwood. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage or a generous daily allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day) that easily covers local trips. From Hopwood you're 30 minutes to Ohiopyle State Park, about 60 miles to Pittsburgh, 75 miles to Morgantown, WV, and roughly 130 miles to Deep Creek Lake, MD. You can compare mileage policies side-by-side directly on each listing page before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Hopwood toward Gettysburg or Niagara Falls, filter for unlimited-mileage listings to keep your budget predictable.

pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park/stay.htmlWhen is the best time of year for a Hopwood RV trip?
Honestly, Hopwood is a four-season destination, but late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot. May and June bring 65 to 80°F days, blooming rhododendrons, and prime whitewater on the Youghiogheny River. July and August are warm and humid (highs 80 to 85°F) and perfect for the natural waterslides at Ohiopyle. September and October are the local insider's favorite for a Hopwood RV trip: crisp 55 to 75°F days and stunning Laurel Highlands fall foliage usually peaking around the second and third weeks of October. Winter brings snow and skiing at nearby Seven Springs and Hidden Valley, though Kentuck Campground closes mid-December until April. Book fall weekends months in advance.
weather.gov/pbz/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you won't be doing it alone. First time renting an RV in the Laurel Highlands? Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, water, propane, slide-outs, and dump procedures. If you'd rather skip the drive entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup so your motorhome rental Hopwood arrives ready to enjoy. For first-timers, a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer is the most forgiving on local roads like the steep grades of US-40 (the National Road) coming out of Hopwood. Pro tip: avoid SR 2019 into Ohiopyle in large RVs and take PA-40 to Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road instead.
penndot.pa.gov/travelinpa/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
Help is always close by. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, tow service, and mechanical breakdowns. From Hopwood you're within easy reach of service centers in Uniontown (about 4 miles), Connellsville (15 miles), and Morgantown, WV (40 miles). You can also message your host directly from the RVezy app, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's roadside assistance card and your host's number before you leave the driveway, so you're not fumbling through paperwork if you ever need a hand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Hopwood?
You're sitting at the crossroads of some of the best driving in the eastern US. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Hopwood include: Hopwood to Pittsburgh (60 miles, about 90 minutes) for city dining and the Strip District; Hopwood to Deep Creek Lake, MD (about 55 miles) for lake life; Hopwood to Seven Springs and Hidden Valley resorts (40 miles) for skiing and summer hiking; Hopwood to Gettysburg (about 165 miles) for Civil War history; and Hopwood to Niagara Falls (about 270 miles) via I-79 north. Cross-border travel to Canada is sometimes allowed with host approval, but trips to Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals. Always confirm with your host when crossing into Canada.
penndot.pa.gov/travelinpa/Pages/default.aspxHow much should I budget for fuel on a Hopwood RV trip?
Easy to plan, easy to budget. Most Class C motorhomes around Hopwood average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans deliver 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG towing). Pennsylvania gas prices have recently averaged around $3.30 to $3.70 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. For a 4-day loop covering Hopwood to Ohiopyle, Fallingwater, and Seven Springs (roughly 250 miles total), expect $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fuel up in Uniontown or Smithfield before heading deep into the Laurel Highlands, as stations near the state park are limited and often pricier.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hopwood?
Earlier is better, especially for the marquee spots. Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park accepts reservations up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and prime summer and fall-foliage weekends often book out the moment the window opens. For private campgrounds like Benner's Meadow Run, Scarlett Knob, and Mountain Pines, aim for 2 to 4 months ahead for summer weekends and 4 to 6 weeks for weekdays. Pro tip: if Kentuck is full, set a cancellation alert and check on Sunday evenings, when last-minute openings often appear as plans shift.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park/stay.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Hopwood?
Manageable with a little planning, and genuinely scenic. Hopwood sits at the base of Chestnut Ridge along the historic National Road (US-40), which climbs steeply east toward Summit Mountain and the Summit Inn. The grade is real (around 9% in spots), so take it slow in larger rigs and use lower gears on the descent into Hopwood. PA-381 toward Ohiopyle is winding but well-maintained. Avoid SR 2019 in large RVs, take PA-40 to Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road instead, per state park guidance. Winters can bring snow and ice from late November through March. Pro tip: download offline maps before you go, as cell service drops in pockets along the Youghiogheny River Gorge.
penndot.pa.gov/travelinpa/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Hopwood offer?
You'll find everything you need, from rustic to resort. Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park offers 200+ sites with many electric hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, a sanitary dump station, and on-site firewood and ice (no transporting outside firewood, per Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture rules). Private parks like Benner's Meadow Run and Mountain Pines step it up with full water, sewer, and 30/50-amp hookups, pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Potable water fill stations are available at most campground entrances. Pro tip: if you're staying somewhere without a dump station, the dump at Ohiopyle State Park is convenient for travelers passing through, and many private parks let day-users dump for a small fee.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park/stay.htmlWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Hopwood?
More comfort than you'd expect. Most RVs on RVezy near Hopwood come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinettes or bunks, a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes include roof AC, furnace, awning, outdoor speakers, TV, and often a generator for boondocking. Many campervan rental Hopwood listings include solar panels, perfect for off-grid stops along the Great Allegheny Passage. Seatbelt counts match the listed sleeping capacity, which matters for family trips. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity icons closely, hosts often include extras like camp chairs, hammocks, and bike racks that make Hopwood adventures easier.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park.htmlWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect?
Plenty of ways to customize your trip. Hopwood hosts commonly offer add-ons like linen and kitchen packages ($25 to $75), generator use, bike racks, camp chairs, fire pits, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Hopwood, Uniontown, or Farmington, often between 1 and 4 PM, with returns by 11 AM. Mileage policies vary by host, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per day or a flat unlimited package for an upcharge. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and the generator at booking to lock in pricing and avoid last-minute add-on stress, especially if you're heading to remote campsites without shore power.
penndot.pa.gov/travelinpa/Pages/default.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple, secure, and transparent. When you book your RV rental in Hopwood, RVezy processes your payment through the platform, so you never hand cash or cards directly to the host. The security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is released after your trip, assuming the RV is returned on time, clean, and undamaged. Deposit amounts vary by RV and trip length. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, timestamps and clear footage are the easiest way to keep your deposit return smooth and dispute-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Hopwood RV rental into winter and cold weather?
Yes, and a snowy Laurel Highlands getaway is something special. Many Hopwood-area RVs are listed as four-season or winter-ready, with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore-power hookups suitable for ski trips to Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, or Laurel Mountain. Use the RVezy listing filters and message the host to confirm winter readiness. Note that Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle closes mid-December through early April, so winter campers usually book private parks like Mountain Pines or stay on private land with hookups. Pro tip: ask the host for a quick cold-weather walkthrough on tank heaters, antifreeze in the lines, and skirting, it's the difference between a cozy weekend and a frozen pipe.
