Camping near Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania
Lower Burrell sits along the Allegheny River in Westmoreland County, about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The location gives RV travelers a base with quick access to city attractions like the Pittsburgh Zoo and Carnegie Science Center, while the surrounding hills and river valleys hold the private campgrounds most travelers use for overnight stays.
The closest options are small, family-run parks. Mountain Top Campground and Wallace Trailer Sales and Court sit north of town, while Smith Grove Camp Grounds lies to the east near New Alexandria. Fox Den Acres Campgrounds and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey are farther southeast along the Pennsylvania Turnpike corridor and tend to draw travelers routing through I-76.
For state-park camping, RVers typically drive east into the Laurel Highlands or northeast toward Prince Gallitzin. Pennsylvania state parks and state forests require reservations be made in advance, and most overnight stays can be booked up to 11 months ahead through a single online system, which simplifies trip planning across multiple stops.
Things to do around Lower Burrell
The Allegheny River corridor supports kayaking, fishing, and riverside biking on the Roaring Run Trail. Families staying at Mountain Top Campground or Wallace Trailer Sales and Court can reach downtown Pittsburgh museums, the zoo, and Kennywood amusement park in under an hour.
Heading east from Smith Grove Camp Grounds or Fox Den Acres Campgrounds puts travelers within reach of the Laurel Highlands, including Ohiopyle State Park for whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater near Mill Run. Laurel Caverns offers guided cave tours suited to older kids.
Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey sits close to Idlewild and SoakZone, a long-running family theme park in Ligonier, and works well as a base for combining park days with historic-town visits.

The Lower Burrell area has a four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. Most private campgrounds in Westmoreland and Armstrong counties operate on a seasonal schedule, typically opening in April and closing in late October. Pennsylvania state park campgrounds follow a similar pattern, with the busiest window running from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
Summer is peak season. Weekends and holidays fill first at popular state parks, and shoreline sites at lake destinations go earliest. Because Pennsylvania opens reservations 11 months in advance at noon Eastern, an unusual release time among state park systems, planners aiming at summer weekends often set calendar reminders for the release date.
Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and, in October, strong foliage color across the Laurel Highlands. Winter camping is limited; snow, ice, and closed water systems keep most sites offline until spring.

How to book campsites
For private campgrounds like Mountain Top Campground, Wallace Trailer Sales and Court, Smith Grove Camp Grounds, and Fox Den Acres Campgrounds, bookings are handled directly with the park by phone or through the park's own website. KOA Journey properties, including Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey, take reservations through the KOA site and app.
For Pennsylvania state parks, reservations run through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday, from 7:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. Most campsites can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival, and the system releases new inventory at noon Eastern rather than early morning.
Reservations made at the maximum 11-month window cannot be moved or cancelled for 22 days; after that, changes carry a transfer fee. Book early for July and August, and watch the system for cancellations on lakefront sites.
What to expect on-site
Private parks near Lower Burrell tend toward smaller, seasonal operations. Expect gravel pull-throughs or back-ins with water, electric, and sewer hookups at most sites, a central wash house, and basic amenities like a camp store, playground, and pavilion. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town and along river valleys but can drop in wooded ridge areas.
State park campgrounds vary. Some offer full hookups at select loops, while many still provide only electric and shared water spigots, with dump stations near the exit. Firewood is not provided, cutting live or standing trees is prohibited, and bringing firewood into the park from other areas may accidentally spread pests, so plan to buy local wood on arrival.
Summer thunderstorms are common in the afternoon, and mosquitoes pick up along the river bottoms. Bring bug spray, rain gear, and leveling blocks for older sites.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lower%20Burrell%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania?
A standard Pennsylvania Class C driver's license (the same one you use for your car) is all you need to rent an RV in Lower Burrell for the vast majority of motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers on RVezy. Pennsylvania only requires a Non-Commercial Class A or B license for rigs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating over 26,000 pounds, which is far heavier than the typical Class B, Class C, or towable RV listed in the Lower Burrell area. To book on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you are set.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Lower Burrell RV rental?
Booking on RVezy is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and the exact refund window depends on how far out your trip is, so review the cancellation details at checkout for your specific Lower Burrell booking. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds guests or provides credits so your trip plans stay on track. Lock in your favorite rig early for peak Laurel Highlands fall foliage weekends in October, then refer to the RVezy cancellation policy if life gets in the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lower Burrell RV trip?
Yes, your pup is welcome on many adventures here. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Lower Burrell, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see rigs whose hosts welcome four-legged guests. Pennsylvania state parks like Keystone State Park (about 25 minutes east) and Moraine State Park (about 45 minutes northwest) both have pet-friendly campground loops, and the Roaring Run Trail along the Kiski River in nearby Apollo is a leashed-dog favorite for morning walks. Message the host before booking if you have a large breed or multiple pets so they can confirm any cleaning fee. Bring a tie-out, collapsible bowls, and proof of vaccinations to make check-in seamless.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pages/PetsInParks.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Lower Burrell?
Yes, RV delivery in Lower Burrell is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV right to your campsite at Keystone State Park, Crooked Creek Lake, or even your home driveway in Lower Burrell, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually scale with mileage, with most local drops within 25 miles running about $75 to $200. This is a game-changer if you are nervous about towing or maneuvering a big rig through Pittsburgh-area traffic. Filter for Delivery on the listing page and message the host with your destination.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lower%20Burrell%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow far can I drive on my Lower Burrell RV trip, and what about mileage fees?
You have serious road trip range from Lower Burrell. Downtown Pittsburgh is about 20 miles southwest, Ohiopyle State Park and the Laurel Highlands are roughly 75 miles south (about 90 minutes), Presque Isle State Park on Lake Erie is about 125 miles north, and Cook Forest State Park is about 80 miles northeast. Most RVezy hosts include a set number of free miles per night (often 100 to 150), with extra miles charged at a per-mile rate listed on the listing. Some hosts even offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer journeys, so filter for that if you are planning a big loop. Ask the host upfront about a flat-rate mileage add-on if you are heading to Niagara Falls or DC, both reachable in a day's drive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lower%20Burrell%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Lower Burrell, PA?
You have fantastic options within an easy drive. Keystone State Park near Derry (about 25 miles east) offers full-hookup sites on a lake. Crooked Creek Lake near Ford City (about 20 miles northeast) has lakeside sites with water and electric, managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Yellow Creek State Park in Indiana County (about 45 miles east) is loved for its quiet wooded loops. Pittsburgh South/Washington KOA Holiday in Washington, PA (about 50 miles southwest) is a great full-hookup choice for RV camping in Lower Burrell departures. Reserve Pennsylvania state park sites through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system up to 11 months ahead, and book peak summer weekends as early as possible.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Lower Burrell?
The sweet spot for a Lower Burrell RV trip is late April through mid-October, with two standout windows. May and June bring blooming Allegheny hillsides, highs in the 70s Fahrenheit, and fewer bugs than peak summer. Mid-September through mid-October delivers Pennsylvania's fall foliage with crisp 60-degree days perfect for campfires. July and August are warm and humid (highs in the low to mid 80s) and ideal for swimming at Keystone Lake. Winters are cold and snowy (lows in the low 20s), so many campgrounds close from November through March. Book the first weekend of October at Ohiopyle or Laurel Hill State Park for peak color, and reserve as early as possible because those weekends sell out fast.
weather.gov/pbz/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Lower Burrell?
You are going to do great, and you will not be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, propane, awning, water systems, and dump valves. If this is your first time renting an RV, start with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer, which drive much like a large pickup. Stick to wider corridors like Route 28, Route 366, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike instead of the narrow streets of downtown Pittsburgh. Practice a few turns and backing in an empty parking lot before heading to your campground, and ask your host any setup questions through the RVezy app before you roll out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002336873-For-guestsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RV rental in Lower Burrell PA on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is a phone call away whether you are parked at a campsite or rolling down the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Roadside coverage handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified repair shop. The Pittsburgh metro area also has many RV service centers within 30 miles of Lower Burrell, so parts and help are close. Snap photos of the RV's tire pressures and fluid levels during your walkthrough so you have a baseline, and save the roadside number to your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lower Burrell RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is fair game, and many guests turn their Lower Burrell RV rental into a multi-state road trip. From here you can easily reach Ohio (Cleveland is about 130 miles), West Virginia (Morgantown is about 75 miles), Maryland, and New York's Niagara Falls (about 220 miles). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host's insurance and approval, so message them through the listing before booking if you plan to cross into Ontario. Mexico travel is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular RV road trip from Lower Burrell routes include the Great Allegheny Passage corridor down to Cumberland, MD, and the Lake Erie loop through Erie and Cleveland.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Realistic numbers help you plan smart. Class B campervan rentals in Lower Burrell typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A motorhomes sit around 7 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers do not burn fuel themselves but reduce your tow vehicle's MPG by 25 to 40 percent. Gas in the Lower Burrell area runs roughly in line with the Pennsylvania state average. For a 300-mile weekend loop to Ohiopyle and back, budget about $90 to $140 in fuel for a Class C. Apps like GasBuddy plus truck-friendly stops like the Pilot/Flying J on I-376 in Monroeville can save real money on longer fills.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Lower Burrell?
For Pennsylvania state parks, the earlier the better. The official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system opens campsite bookings up to 11 months in advance, and prime summer weekends at Ohiopyle, Laurel Hill, and Keystone State Park can sell out within hours. For midweek summer trips or shoulder-season stays in May or late September, two to four weeks out is usually plenty. Private parks like local KOAs near Lower Burrell often have more last-minute availability. If you miss the initial release, check back daily, the PA system lets people cancel up to one day before arrival, so openings pop up constantly all summer long.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Lower Burrell?
Driving an RV around Lower Burrell is very manageable with a little awareness. The main routes (Route 28, Route 366, Hulton Road) are wide, well-maintained, and easy for motorhomes. Heading south into Pittsburgh, be mindful of the Fort Pitt Tunnel and avoid the steep, narrow streets of the South Side and Mt. Washington in larger rigs. Always check posted clearance signs for your specific RV height. Winters bring snow and ice from December through March, so most folks plan their Lower Burrell RV trip from April through October. Skip the I-376 Squirrel Hill Tunnel during weekday rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.) and instead take Route 28 south to the Highland Park Bridge for a smoother drive into the city.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Lower Burrell offer, and where can I dump tanks?
Local campgrounds make RV living easy. Most full-hookup parks near Lower Burrell, including Keystone State Park and Crooked Creek Lake, offer 30 and 50 amp electric, fresh water hookups, sewer at premium sites, hot showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. For dumping when you are between stops, public dump stations are available at Keystone State Park, Yellow Creek State Park, and many Flying J and Pilot truck stops along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Pennsylvania state parks also offer non-electric loops if you want a cheap RV rental in Lower Burrell experience for shorter stays. Top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground, because some state forest sites only offer hand-pump wells.

Many rigs include a TV, onboard generators for boondocking, and Wi-Fi or cellular boosters for staying connected on the Allegheny River. Hosts often include camp chairs, outdoor mats, kitchen kits, linens, and BBQs. Check the amenities list on each listing to see exactly what is bundled, and message the host with any specific questions before you book.
