Campgrounds and RV parks near New Kensington, PA

The Allegheny River corridor supports paddling and fishing, with the Armstrong Trail offering rail-trail riding along the river north of town. Day trips into Pittsburgh put the rivers, stadiums, museums, and the Strip District within roughly a 30-minute drive from most campgrounds in the area. State parks add lake-based recreation. Keystone State Park centers on a 78-acre lake with warm and cold water fishing and an ADA-accessible fishing area by the spillway. Moraine State Park centers on the 3,225-acre Lake Arthur, with the surrounding park used for hiking, bicycling, group camping, picnicking, and hunting. Families with younger kids often pair a campground stay with the Pittsburgh Zoo, Kennywood amusement park, or the Carnegie Science Center, all reachable as day outings.

Camping season in western Pennsylvania runs primarily from April through October. Private campgrounds near New Kensington typically open by early April and close in mid to late October, tracking freeze risk and demand. State-park campgrounds follow a similar pattern: Keystone State Park is open to camping from the first Friday in April to the third Sunday of October. Summer is the busiest window. Pennsylvania state park campgrounds enforce quiet hours and alcohol policies, and many sites require advance reservations during the peak season from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekends around Independence Day and Labor Day book earliest, and lakeside loops fill first. Spring and fall trade crowds for cooler nights and, in October, hardwood color across the ridges. Winter camping is limited: most private parks close, and while some state parks remain open year-round for day use, RV hookups are generally shut down after the season ends. Shower facilities may not be available after October 1.

Terrain around New Kensington is hilly, with campgrounds often set on ridge tops or in wooded hollows off two-lane county roads. Larger rigs should confirm approach routes with the campground before arrival, since some parks send detailed directions to keep guests off low-clearance routes. Sites at private parks near New Kensington range from full hookups to electric-and-water only, with dump stations typically on-site. State-park loops lean toward electric-only sites with shared bathhouses. At Keystone State Park, Lakeside Campground is adjacent to the lake and Hillside Campground is in a more remote area of the park and accommodates campers with pets. Both campgrounds have a modern bathhouse and a sanitary dump station is available. Expect wooded, moderately private sites, mosquitoes in midsummer, and cell service that varies by ridge.
