Campgrounds and RV parks near North Irwin, PA

Keystone State Park anchors the local outdoor scene with swimming, boating, and fishing on Keystone Lake, plus hiking trails and birding habitats. The 78-acre Keystone Lake has warm and cold water fishing, and anglers fish year-round under Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission regulations. Keystone State Park maintains 8 miles of trails that are open year-round, including a loop that encircles the lake. The Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail runs through nearby Cedar Creek Park, giving cyclists a long, mostly flat ride toward Pittsburgh or south toward Cumberland, Maryland. Fox Den Acres offers scheduled activities, a swimming pool, game room, playground, store, and wildlife museum. Pittsburgh attractions, including pro sports venues and museums, sit roughly 45 minutes west, and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater is a common day-trip in the Laurel Highlands.

The public camping season here is tightly tied to the state-park calendar. At Keystone State Park, about 100 tent and trailer sites are available from early April to mid-October. Shower facilities may not be available after October 1. Fox Den Acres runs a similar window, open seasonally May 1 through October 31. Private parks generally have a longer shoulder season, and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey is the most reliable option for late-fall or winter stays. Summer is peak season. Weekends, holidays, and the stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill up first, particularly lakefront and full-hookup sites. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures and lower demand, but rain is common and overnight lows can drop near freezing in April and late October. Winters can be harsh, making some areas less accessible: some loops, bathhouses, and dump stations close, and trails may shift to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing rather than hiking. Note that Keystone Lake is scheduled to be drawn down after Labor Day 2026 through mid-October 2027, which will affect water-based activities during that period.

Expect a mix of forested state-park sites and more open, amenity-heavy private parks. Lakeside Campground is adjacent to the lake. Hillside Campground is in a more remote area of the park and accommodates those camping with pets. Both campgrounds have a modern bathhouse. A sanitary dump station is available. Fox Den Acres welcomes big rigs with easy pull-thru sites and offers full hookups. Cell service may be limited, so plan accordingly and download park maps before arrival. Terrain is rolling rather than mountainous, summer thunderstorms are common, and biting insects pick up in late spring. Bring layers for cool evenings even in midsummer.
