Pitcairn camping overview
Pitcairn is a small borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, sitting about 12 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh along Turtle Creek. The borough itself covers just half a square mile and does not contain a campground, so RV travelers use it as a base for exploring the eastern Pittsburgh suburbs, the Laurel Highlands, and nearby state parks. Most overnight options lie a short drive east along the US 22 and Interstate 76 corridors, in Westmoreland County.
The closest full-service RV parks include Wallace Trailer Sales and Court, Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey, and Fox Den Acres Campgrounds near New Stanton. For public-land camping, Lakeside at Keystone State Park offers lakefront sites within roughly a 30-mile drive, and Mountain Top Campground rounds out the private options in the surrounding hills. The area suits travelers who want city access by day and quieter, wooded sites at night.
Things to do near Pitcairn
Pittsburgh sits a short drive west and offers riverfront trails, sports venues, the Strip District, museums, and the Duquesne and Monongahela inclines. East of Pitcairn, the Laurel Highlands opens up quickly, with day trips to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, Ohiopyle State Park, and Idlewild Park.
Keystone State Park, near the Lakeside campground, has a 78-acre lake with warm and cold water fishing, a swimming beach, and trails including the 2-mile Lake Side loop that is suitable for bikes. Trails at Keystone are open year-round for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Closer to town, Turtle Creek and the Great Allegheny Passage trail network give walkers and cyclists easy access to green space without a long drive.

Dan’s camper was perfect for our weekend camping trip. It was clean, organized, and fit our family of 4 with plenty of room. Dan was very helpful at pick up and drop off getting everything hooked up and offloaded.

Booking campgrounds near Pitcairn
Lakeside at Keystone State Park is booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system operated by ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least three days ahead of arrival and can be booked up to 11 months in advance, which matters for summer weekends and holidays that sell out quickly. Reservations can also be made by phone at 888-PA-PARKS.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Fox Den Acres Campgrounds accepts phone reservations through its office, and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey books directly through the KOA site. Wallace Trailer Sales and Court and Mountain Top Campground are best contacted directly by phone to confirm site type, length, and hookup availability, especially for big rigs and pull-through sites.
What to expect at Pitcairn-area campgrounds
Expect a mix of full-hookup private RV parks and more basic state park loops. Fox Den Acres offers a large inventory of pull-through sites with 30 and 50 amp service, water, sewer, cable, and Wi-Fi, plus a pool, laundry, and a small fishing pond. Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey provides standard KOA amenities suited to overnight travelers off Interstate 70.
At Keystone State Park, Lakeside Campground has sites near the water, both loops share a modern bathhouse, and a sanitary dump station is available on site. Shower facilities may not be available after October 1. Cell service can be spotty in the wooded state park areas, so downloading maps in advance is a good idea. Terrain around Pitcairn is generally hilly and wooded, with narrow local roads leading to some campground entrances.
