Plum camping overview
Plum is a suburban borough in Allegheny County, roughly 15 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh in the western foothills of the Allegheny Plateau. RV renters use it as a base for Pittsburgh sightseeing, riverfront trails along the Allegheny, and weekend runs into the Laurel Highlands. Camping options within an hour's drive range from small private courts to full-service family parks with pools and hookups.
Close-in choices skew toward private RV parks rather than public land. Wallace Trailer Sales and Court and Mountain Top Campground sit within short reach of Plum, and Smith Grove Camp Grounds offers another local option for renters wanting a quieter feel. Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey serves as a common overnight stop for travelers passing through on the Pennsylvania Turnpike corridor.
Farther out toward the Laurel Highlands, Fox Den Acres Campgrounds sits about 35 miles from Pittsburgh with easy highway access, scheduled activities, a swimming pool, game room, playground, and store. Together these parks cover most short and midweek stays in the Plum area.
Things to do near Plum
Pittsburgh anchors most itineraries: the Point State Park confluence, Carnegie museums, the Strip District, PNC Park, and the Duquesne and Monongahela inclines are all inside a 30-minute drive. Families with kids often add the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium or Kennywood amusement park in West Mifflin.
Outdoor days center on the Allegheny River and the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail network, plus nearby county parks such as Boyce Park and Harrison Hills. About an hour southeast, the Laurel Highlands open up hiking at Ohiopyle State Park, whitewater on the Youghiogheny, and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville is a common day trip from campgrounds in the Fox Den Acres Campgrounds and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey area.

The camping season around Plum runs roughly late April through late October, with peak demand from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day and a second surge for October foliage. Many private parks in the region keep a defined season: Fox Den Acres Campgrounds is open May 1 through October 31. Off-season RV camping typically means using a park with year-round sites or working within a private park's shoulder-season dates.
Summer brings warm, humid days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so renters should plan for wet awnings and muddy fire rings. Fall weekends in September and October are the most competitive booking window regionally. October is peak foliage season in Pennsylvania's mountains, campgrounds in the Pocono and Laurel Highlands regions fill up for every October weekend, and booking 11 months ahead is advised for fall color camping.
Winter camping is limited and mostly suits self-contained rigs at parks that stay open year-round.

How to book campgrounds near Plum
Private parks close to Plum are booked directly through each campground's own website or phone line, and through third-party platforms such as Campspot, RoverPass, and Good Sam. Summer weekends and holiday periods at Fox Den Acres Campgrounds, Mountain Top Campground, and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey typically require reservations weeks in advance; midweek stays are easier to secure.
For public land, Pennsylvania state parks and state forests use a single reservation system. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival. Pennsylvania opens reservations 11 months in advance at 12:00 PM Eastern Time, a noon release time that is unusual among state park systems. Reservations can be made using the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday.
What to expect at Plum campgrounds
Private parks near Plum generally offer full hookups, gravel or grass pads, and family amenities. Sites at Fox Den Acres Campgrounds are typical of the region: easy access for rigs of any size, though the entrance descends a steep driveway, most short-stay guests are placed in a large pull-through field, full hookups work well, and sites are fairly packed in tight with neighbors. Big-rig renters should confirm site length and turning access when booking.
Expect standard check-in windows around midday, quiet hours after 10 or 11 p.m., and leashed-pet policies at most parks. Cell coverage is strong throughout the Pittsburgh metro, and hookups, dump stations, and propane are widely available. Pack for humidity, mosquitoes near water, and the occasional heavy thunderstorm.

Once on the road, Pennsylvania state parks such as Keystone State Park (about 30 miles east) and Moraine State Park (around 45 miles north) have pet-friendly campsites with leash rules and easy trail access. Closer to home, Boyce Park's wooded loops just minutes from Plum Borough are great for a stretch before pickup day. Pro tip: message the host through the listing to confirm any pet fee and ask which campgrounds they recommend for travelers with four-legged crew.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to me in Plum?
Yes, RV delivery Plum is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip towing or driving a motorhome through Pittsburgh traffic. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your rig at popular campgrounds like Mountain Top Campground in Tarentum, Bear Run Campground in Portersville, or right at your driveway in Plum Borough. They will level the RV, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before leaving. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, and check the listing for the per-mile delivery fee. It is the easiest way to start your Pennsylvania camping trip with zero stress.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plum%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow far can I drive on a Plum RV rental?
You have plenty of range for a memorable RV road trip from Plum. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer unlimited mileage packages or add-on mile bundles at booking. That is enough to reach Ohiopyle State Park (about 70 miles southeast) for whitewater rafting, Presque Isle State Park on Lake Erie (around 130 miles north), or even Niagara Falls (roughly 220 miles). Each listing shows the mileage policy upfront, so you know exactly what you are working with. Pro tip: if you are planning a longer Pennsylvania loop through the Laurel Highlands and Allegheny National Forest, filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage to keep the budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plum%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Plum, PA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Plum. Some of the best campgrounds near Plum include Mountain Top Campground in Tarentum (about 11 miles north, open year-round with 30 and 50-amp full hookups), Keystone State Park Campground in Derry Township (around 30 miles east, with lake swimming and yurts), Bear Run Campground in Portersville (35 miles north, near Moraine State Park and Lake Arthur), and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA in Madison (about 25 miles south, also open year-round). For a quick weekend, Mountain Top is the easiest pick. Pro tip: book Keystone State Park sites the moment your dates open since they fill quickly between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites/camping-locations-map.htmlWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Plum, PA?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Plum, PA. Summer days from June through August average highs in the low-to-mid 80s with warm, humid evenings perfect for campfires, while September and early October bring cool nights in the 50s and stunning Laurel Highlands fall foliage. Spring (April to early May) is quieter and cheaper, with highs in the 60s, though you'll want a rig with a furnace for chilly nights. Winters in Plum can dip into the teens with snow, so cold-weather RV trips are best left to experienced campers in heated, four-season RVs. Pro tip: aim for the last two weeks of September for peak leaf-peeping and lower campground rates.
weather.gov/pbz/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Pittsburgh?
You'll do great, and you won't be on your own. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, hookups, the propane system, and slide-outs before you leave the driveway. For your first time renting an RV, a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet is the easiest to handle on Plum's winding roads and the Allegheny Valley Expressway. Stick to Route 286 and Route 22 for smoother routes out of town, and avoid the Fort Pitt Tunnel and Liberty Tunnel downtown with anything tall. Pro tip: ask your host to share a quick checklist photo from the walkthrough so you can reference it later at the campground.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something breaks down during my Plum RV trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked at a campsite in Plum Borough or cruising the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The service handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. On top of that, your host is usually just a message away through the RVezy app for questions about quirks of their specific RV (where's the fuse panel, how does the awning retract). RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside assistance number after pickup so it's handy even if your phone signal gets spotty in the Allegheny foothills.
penndot.pa.gov/RegionalOffices/district11/Pages/default.aspxCan I take my Plum RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy rentals from Plum are cleared for travel throughout the United States, so popular cross-border road trips into Ohio (Cleveland is only 130 miles west), West Virginia (Morgantown sits 80 miles south), or New York (Niagara Falls about 220 miles north) are all fair game. Travel into Canada may be allowed but depends on the individual host and their insurance, so message them through the listing before booking if Toronto or Niagara-on-the-Lake is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico isn't permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: bring your passport for any cross-border trip and confirm host approval in writing through the RVezy chat.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I expect?
Realistic expectations make budgeting easy. Class C motorhomes from Plum typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans manage 16 to 22 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG when towing). Pennsylvania gas prices generally hover near or just above the national average, with stations along Route 22 and the PA Turnpike being convenient fill-up spots. For a long weekend trip from Plum to Ohiopyle and back (around 150 miles total), budget roughly $60 to $90 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Monroeville or Murrysville before heading east, since prices climb at Turnpike service plazas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Plum?
Earlier is better, especially for Pennsylvania state parks. Reservations at Keystone State Park, Moraine State Park, and Ohiopyle State Park open 11 months in advance through the official Pennsylvania DCNR reservation system, and prime weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often fill within hours. For private parks like Bear Run Campground or Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA, aim to book 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends, while shoulder-season trips in May or late September can often be booked just 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: once you confirm your RV rental Pennsylvania dates on RVezy, head straight to the state park reservation site to lock in your site the same day.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Plum and Pittsburgh?
Plum sits in a hilly, suburban pocket northeast of Pittsburgh, so most local roads are manageable, but a few tips help. Stick to Route 286, Route 22, and the PA Turnpike (I-76) for the easiest RV-friendly routes. Avoid downtown Pittsburgh's Fort Pitt Tunnel, Liberty Tunnel, and Squirrel Hill Tunnel in anything over 11 feet tall, and skip narrow streets in the Strip District. The Allegheny foothills mean steep grades on Route 28 and Route 30, so downshift on long descents. Winter brings ice and snow from December through March. Pro tip: choose RV delivery Plum if you'd rather skip city driving altogether and have the rig waiting at your campground.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Plum?
Most campgrounds near Plum are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Private parks like Mountain Top Campground in Tarentum and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA offer full hookup sites with water, sewer, and 30 or 50-amp electric, plus dump stations, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Pennsylvania state parks (Keystone, Moraine, Raccoon Creek) typically offer modern restrooms, potable water, and electric sites in 20, 30, or 50-amp service, with select full-hookup sites being added each year. Dump stations are standard at all PA state parks. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the host's driveway and ask about the nearest dump station on your route, since some smaller sites are water-and-electric only.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental from Plum?
You'll be impressed by how much fits into a modern RV. A typical Class C motorhome rental Plum sleeps 4 to 7 people with a queen bed, bunk beds, and a convertible dinette, plus a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave), a bathroom with shower, air conditioning, furnace, and a generator for off-grid power. Most listings also include a TV, USB outlets, and outdoor speakers. Travel trailers offer similar layouts without the cab, while campervans are more compact with a bed, mini kitchen, and sometimes a wet bath. Seatbelts are provided for all designated travel seats. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list for Wi-Fi hotspot, outdoor grill, and bike rack if those matter for your Pennsylvania camping plans.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when booking?
RVezy hosts in Plum offer plenty of useful add-ons to make your trip easier. Popular options include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes, bike racks, generators, and even kayaks. Many hosts also offer pre-stocked propane tanks and pre-filled fresh water. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Plum Borough, Monroeville, or Murrysville, with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough included. Delivery to your campground (priced per mile) is a popular alternative. Pro tip: check the mileage policy on each listing carefully, and if you are planning extra miles for a Lake Erie or Ohiopyle loop, ask about an unlimited mileage upgrade at booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plum%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow do payment and security deposits work for a Plum RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through RVezy: you pay your rental total, taxes, and any add-ons securely on the platform when you book, so no cash or checks change hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is also placed (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and held by RVezy, not the host, until after your trip wraps up. As long as you return the RV in the same condition, with no new damage and within mileage and generator-hour limits, the deposit is released back to your card. Pro tip: take date-stamped walkaround photos at pickup and dropoff to make any deposit conversation quick and painless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there great road trip destinations within a day's drive of Plum?
You're perfectly positioned for an unforgettable RV road trip from Plum. Top picks include Ohiopyle State Park and Fallingwater (about 70 miles southeast, an easy 90-minute drive for whitewater rafting and Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece), Cook Forest State Park (90 miles north for old-growth hemlocks), Presque Isle State Park on Lake Erie (130 miles north for beaches and sunsets), Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio (130 miles west), and Seneca Rocks in West Virginia (200 miles south). For a longer adventure, Niagara Falls is roughly 220 miles north. Pro tip: a family RV trip Plum favorite is the Laurel Highlands loop, hitting Ohiopyle, Fallingwater, and Seven Springs in three nights with easy distances between each stop.
