Campgrounds and RV parks near Roscoe, PA

The Monongahela River is the local anchor. The Upper Mon Water Trail extends about 60 miles from Fairmont, West Virginia, to Rice's Landing in Pennsylvania, with generally mild current, though the river can be hazardous during high water and around large boats, and several dams require careful attention to signs, buoys, and locks. Cyclists have direct access to the Great Allegheny Passage and the Mon River Rail-Trail System, both with long, mostly flat, crushed-limestone or paved surfaces suitable for kids and mixed abilities. About an hour southeast, Ohiopyle State Park covers roughly 20,500 acres between Chestnut Ridge and Laurel Hill, and the focal point of the park is more than 14 miles of the Youghiogheny River gorge, which supports whitewater boating, recreational fishing, and kayaking. Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, both Frank Lloyd Wright homes, are within the same day-trip radius.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. Private campgrounds around Roscoe generally open around April and wind down in October or November, while Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle stays open from April to mid-December. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly at both public and private parks, especially any site near the Great Allegheny Passage or the Youghiogheny. Spring brings reliable rain and higher river flows, which is good news for whitewater trips and harder on tent sites and unpaved access roads. Peak wildflower and waterfall viewing runs from April into May. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and July is typically among the wettest months. Autumn is the sleeper season. Foliage in the Laurel Highlands generally peaks in mid-October, crowds thin after Labor Day, and daytime temperatures stay comfortable for hiking and cycling. Winter closures are common at private campgrounds, and snow and ice on secondary roads make RV access difficult.

Terrain around Roscoe is hilly river-valley country. Access roads to smaller campgrounds can be narrow and winding, so drivers of larger Class A rigs and long fifth-wheels should confirm approach routes before arrival. Cell coverage is generally solid near Roscoe and along Interstate 70, but drops in the deeper hollows of the Laurel Highlands. Expect full or partial hookups at most private parks, with dump stations, potable water, and 30- or 50-amp service common. State park sites at Ohiopyle include a mix of electric and non-electric loops with modern restrooms and showers. Bears, raccoons, and deer are all present in the region, so store food and trash securely. Alcohol is not permitted in Pennsylvania state parks.
