Camping near Scottdale, Pennsylvania
Scottdale sits in Westmoreland County in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, roughly an hour southeast of Pittsburgh. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to the Youghiogheny River corridor, the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail, and Ohiopyle State Park, which encompasses approximately 20,500 acres and attracts millions of visitors annually.
Private RV parks cluster along the routes between Scottdale, Connellsville, and the Turnpike. The Blue Canoe RV Resort and Fox Den Acres Campgrounds are among the closest full-service options, with Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey offering hookups to the northwest. Families traveling with children often target Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Mill Run for their amenity-heavy resort formats.
The Laurel Highlands region sits at elevations well above Pittsburgh, so expect winding approaches, cooler nights, and pockets of poor cell service. Camping availability in the Scottdale area typically runs from spring through fall, with many campgrounds operating from mid-April through mid-October, though a few larger facilities remain open on a longer schedule.
Things to do around Scottdale
Outdoor recreation centers on the Youghiogheny River and its trail network. The Youghiogheny River Gorge has some of the busiest whitewater rafting runs east of the Mississippi with class III and IV rapids, and hiking trails total 79 miles, including the 27-mile multi-use Youghiogheny River Trail, shared by bikers and cross-country skiers. The trail forms part of the Great Allegheny Passage, which links Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland.
Architecture and history round out the itinerary. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob are within a short drive and are open for tours, and Fort Necessity National Battlefield is nearby off Route 40. Winter travelers can reach Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, and Laurel Mountain ski areas from most campgrounds in the region.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Ohiopyle's Kentuck Campground fills quickly and river outfitters operate at full staff. Kentuck Campground has about 200 campsites and is open from April to mid-December, so shoulder-season RV travelers still have a state-park option outside summer. Reserve early for summer weekends; cancellations are the main way in once dates sell out.
Spring brings the heaviest whitewater flows and cool, wet weather. The main whitewater rafting season is April to October, but the falls are only open when the area is staffed, so check dates in advance. Fall delivers the region's foliage window through October and typically the year's most stable camping weather.
Winter is quiet. Most private campgrounds close or reduce services in the colder months, and Kentuck shuts by mid-December. The park has 33.9 miles of trails suited to cross-country skiing, including the Sproul Trails and parts of the Kentuck Trail, and the Great Allegheny Passage also becomes a good route when snow accumulates.

How to book campgrounds
Reservations at Ohiopyle State Park are made through Pennsylvania State Parks on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance for most state park overnight stays, either through the reservations website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Pennsylvania opens reservations 11 months in advance at 12:00 PM Eastern Time, and the noon release time is unusual among state park systems. A two-night stay is required on weekend reservations during the summer, with a 14-night maximum stay.
Private parks book directly. The Blue Canoe RV Resort, Fox Den Acres Campgrounds, Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey, and both Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort locations take reservations through their own websites, with the KOA also bookable via the KOA app. Holiday weekends at the Jellystone properties fill months out; target midweek nights for better availability.
What to expect on site
State-park sites at Ohiopyle are wooded and sloped. Kentuck offers 200 campsites with flush toilets, warm showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and some electric hookups, and the campground has a sanitary dump station and shower houses. Water and sewer at individual sites are not standard, and access roads inside the park are hilly.
Private parks in the area lean family-oriented with pools, playgrounds, and organized activities, typical of the Jellystone format. Full hookups are common at Blue Canoe, Fox Den Acres, and the KOA Journey. Bringing firewood into the park from other areas may accidentally spread pest insects and diseases that threaten park resources, so campers should use local firewood.
Cell coverage is inconsistent in the gorge and on ridge roads. Download park maps and driving directions before leaving Scottdale, and plan fuel stops in town rather than closer to Ohiopyle. SR 2019 into Kentuck is very steep, so large RVs should avoid it and take PA 40 to SR 2010 (Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road) instead.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Scottdale,PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Scottdale, PA?
Great news: for nearly every RV rental in Scottdale, your regular Class C Pennsylvania driver's license (the standard car license) is all you need. PennDOT only requires a non-commercial Class B license if you're driving a single RV over 26,000 pounds, and a Class A for combinations over 26,000 pounds with trailers over 10,000 pounds. The vast majority of motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy fall well under those weights. You must be 25 or older to rent, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set for your Laurel Highlands trip.

The sweet spot for an RV rental in Scottdale, PA is late April through mid-October, with peak conditions from June through September when daytime highs typically reach the upper 70s to mid 80s and the Youghiogheny River runs prime for whitewater. September and early October are insider favorites: the Laurel Highlands light up with fall color, crowds thin, and pricing softens. Spring (April to May) brings rushing waterfalls at Cucumber Falls and Ohiopyle. Winter rentals are more limited; if you go, look for a four-season rig with heated tanks. Pro tip: time your trip for the first two weekends of October to catch peak foliage along the Great Allegheny Passage.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving one in the Laurel Highlands?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV in Scottdale is genuinely easier than people expect. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, level the rig, hook up at campsites, and dump tanks. The roads around Scottdale are well-maintained, and most travelers stick to US-119, PA-31, and PA-381, all manageable two-lane routes. If you're nervous about driving, pick a smaller Class C or campervan rental Scottdale and ask the host about delivery so the RV is already parked when you arrive. Pro tip: take a 20-minute practice loop around quiet residential streets in Scottdale before heading toward Ohiopyle's curvier mountain roads.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
Take a deep breath: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked at Kentuck Campground or rolling down US-40 near Farmington. Roadside covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. For RV-specific issues (a finicky water pump or stuck slide-out), your host is your first call, they know their rig inside and out and can usually troubleshoot in minutes. RVezy's support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave Scottdale, cell service can drop in the deeper Laurel Highlands hollows.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Scottdale RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed by most hosts, and Scottdale's location makes it a fantastic launchpad. Popular routes include heading south into West Virginia (Cooper's Rock and the New River Gorge), east into Maryland along the Great Allegheny Passage corridor to Cumberland (about 80 miles), or north into New York's Finger Lakes (around 5 hours). Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper documentation, just message them before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: a classic RV road trip from Scottdale loops through Ohiopyle, Deep Creek Lake MD, and back via the historic National Road (US-40).
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Scottdale?
Plan smart: gas in Western Pennsylvania currently averages around $4.50 to $4.70 per gallon (Greensburg and Uniontown stations near Scottdale tend to run a bit cheaper than Pittsburgh). Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 MPG, campervans 14 to 18 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG). For a typical 300-mile Laurel Highlands loop in a Class C, budget roughly $135 to $170 in fuel. Sheetz stations along US-119 and the PA Turnpike consistently price below average. Pro tip: fill up Monday or Tuesday in Greensburg before heading toward Ohiopyle, prices climb closer to weekend tourist demand.
fueleconomy.gov/feg/gasprices/states/pa.shtmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near Scottdale?
For summer and fall weekends, book Ohiopyle State Park's Kentuck Campground as early as possible, reservations open 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system (powered by ReserveAmerica) and the prime electric sites disappear within hours for July and October. Private campgrounds like Madison/Pittsburgh KOA and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Mill Run typically need 2 to 4 months of lead time for summer weekends. Midweek and shoulder season (May, September) are far more forgiving, often bookable a few weeks out. Pro tip: if Kentuck is full, set a CampScanner alert and check the day before, cancellations open up surprisingly often.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/ohiopyle-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.doWhat are driving conditions like around Scottdale and the Laurel Highlands?
Scottdale itself sits in gentle rolling farmland, easy driving for any RV. As you head toward Ohiopyle or Seven Springs, expect curvy two-lane mountain roads, moderate grades, and occasional switchbacks (PA-381 and SR-2019 are scenic but require steady speeds). The PA Turnpike (I-76) cuts east-west with standard highway clearances. Watch for fog in low valleys at dawn, deer crossings at dusk, and winter ice from November through March. The region's bridges are well-marked for height, the lowest you're likely to encounter is around 12 feet, well above most RV heights. Pro tip: use US-119 north-south instead of back roads when possible, it's wider and easier in a larger motorhome.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Scottdale?
You'll find solid full-service options. Madison/Pittsburgh KOA, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Mill Run, and Benner's Meadow Run offer 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups at most sites, plus shower houses, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Kentuck Campground in Ohiopyle State Park has electric hookups on many sites, hot showers, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station near the exit, water spigots are shared throughout the loops. Most private parks sell firewood and ice on-site, and propane is available in nearby Connellsville and Mount Pleasant. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot extension for your power cord, several Kentuck sites place the pedestal on the shared entrance side.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park/stay.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Scottdale?
You'll be impressed: most Scottdale RV rentals come fully equipped with real beds (queen or king masters, plus bunk or convertible sleeping), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator for off-grid power, a TV with DVD, and outdoor awnings. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss based on host setup and cell coverage (which can dip in Ohiopyle's deeper gorges). Hosts often include kitchen kits, linens, and outdoor chairs. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and message your host to confirm exactly what's included so your packing list stays light.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park.htmlWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Scottdale offer plenty of helpful add-ons to make life easier: kitchen kits ($25 to $50), linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), portable grills, outdoor chairs, generators with fuel, bike racks (handy for the Great Allegheny Passage), and even kayaks for the Youghiogheny. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Scottdale between 1 and 4 PM, with returns by 11 AM. Mileage policies vary, you'll see free nightly miles plus an overage rate clearly on each listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator if you're heading to a non-electric site at Kentuck Campground, it transforms the experience.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park/stay.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card at booking, no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip starts and released after return assuming no damage, missing items, or policy violations. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup and dropoff, snap photos of the exterior and interior, and return the RV with the fuel and propane levels matching pickup. Pro tip: keep your gas receipts from stations along US-119 in case the host wants proof of refueling near Scottdale.
