Campgrounds near Smithfield, Pennsylvania
Smithfield sits in southern Fayette County, Pennsylvania, within an easy drive of the Laurel Highlands and the Youghiogheny River corridor. The borough makes a practical base for RV travellers heading to Ohiopyle State Park, Fort Necessity National Battlefield, and the Frank Lloyd Wright houses at Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. Morgantown, West Virginia lies roughly a half hour south, adding grocery runs, fuel, and a regional airport to the trip-planning picture.
Private RV parks cluster along the Route 40 and Route 381 corridors between Smithfield, Farmington, and Markleysburg. Sand Springs Campground and Tall Oaks Campground are among the closest options to town, while Benner's Meadow Run Camping and Cabins, Firehouse RV Campgrounds, and The Blue Canoe RV Resort offer a mix of full-hookup sites, cabins, and family amenities within a short drive.
Ohiopyle State Park encompasses roughly 20,500 acres of the Laurel Ridge and serves as the regional gateway to the Laurel Highlands, giving Smithfield-area campers immediate access to public land.
Things to do near Smithfield
Ohiopyle State Park is the anchor activity. The Youghiogheny River offers whitewater boating that ranges from Class I to Class V rapids, and guided raft trips run out of the town of Ohiopyle. Calmer sections work for tubing and kayaking with kids.
On land, the park has an extensive hiking trail network, and a section of the Great Allegheny Passage passes through the gorge, suitable for both hiking and biking. Ferncliff Peninsula, the Meadow Run natural waterslides, and Cucumber Falls are common half-day stops.
Architecture and history round out the trip. Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob offer timed tours, Fort Necessity National Battlefield covers the opening of the French and Indian War, and Nemacolin Resort adds golf, a wildlife park, and dining within about twenty minutes of Smithfield.

The prime RV season runs late spring through mid-fall. Kentuck Campground inside Ohiopyle State Park operates from April to mid-December, and most private parks in the area follow a similar calendar. A few stay open year-round for winter travellers heading to Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, or Laurel Mountain ski resorts.
Summer weekends are the busiest window. Ohiopyle draws millions of visitors annually, and crowds are inevitable at popular trails and river-access points, so mid-week arrivals and shoulder-season trips give a calmer experience. The main whitewater rafting season runs April to October, with peak flows in spring and reliable guided trips through the summer.
Fall brings hardwood colour across the Laurel Ridge, typically peaking in mid-October. Winter camping is limited: overnight lows dip well below freezing, snow is common, and many private parks close their water systems from late November through March.
How to book
State-park sites are handled through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system, hosted on ReserveAmerica. Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle offers roughly 200 campsites plus a small number of cottages and yurts. Campsite reservations open 11 months in advance, at noon Eastern time, and Pennsylvania charges no state-park entrance fee. Holiday weekends and prime summer dates fill fast, so booking near the eleven-month opening is smart.
Private campgrounds around Smithfield, including Sand Springs Campground, Tall Oaks Campground, Benner's Meadow Run Camping and Cabins, Firehouse RV Campgrounds, and The Blue Canoe RV Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Full-hookup pull-throughs and cabins move first for summer holiday weekends and fall foliage.
What to expect
Terrain is hilly. Roads between Smithfield, Farmington, and Ohiopyle include grades, switchbacks, and narrow shoulders, so drivers of larger Class A or fifth-wheel rigs should plan routes on Route 40 and Route 381 rather than tighter back roads. Cell service is patchy inside the Youghiogheny gorge and on ridge sections of the park.
Site amenities vary. Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle offers electric hookups on many sites, but water and sewer at the site are limited, while private parks in the corridor usually include full hookups, showers, laundry, and pools.
Evenings run cool even in summer thanks to elevation. Pack layers, a rain shell, insect repellent for wooded sites, and a card for whitewater launch access fees on peak weekends.
