Campgrounds near Smock, Pennsylvania
Smock is an unincorporated community in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, roughly halfway between Perryopolis and Uniontown along Pennsylvania Route 51, and part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The community sits in the Laurel Highlands foothills west of Chestnut Ridge, putting RV travelers within an hour of the region's biggest outdoor draws.
Campgrounds cluster to the east and south, toward the mountains. The Blue Canoe RV Resort and Firehouse RV Campgrounds serve travelers looking for full-hookup RV sites close to Smock itself. Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey works well as a highway-accessible base with standard KOA amenities, while Tall Oaks Campground offers a more traditional Fayette County setting.
For trips built around Ohiopyle State Park, which encompasses approximately 20,500 acres of rugged natural beauty and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Highlands, Benner's Meadow Run Camping and Cabins sits closer to the park's south end near Farmington. Rigs based in Smock can day-trip to Ohiopyle, Fort Necessity National Battlefield, and Laurel Caverns without repositioning, which makes the area a practical hub for a multi-stop Laurel Highlands itinerary.
Things to do near Smock
The primary draw is Ohiopyle State Park in the Laurel Highlands. The rushing waters of the Youghiogheny River Gorge are the centerpiece for Ohiopyle, and the Youghiogheny provides some of the best whitewater boating in the eastern United States, as well as spectacular scenery. The park connects to the Great Allegheny Passage, a rail-trail suitable for both hiking and biking.
Architecture fans can tour Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous home, along with nearby Kentuck Knob. History travelers head to Fort Necessity National Battlefield, which preserves the site of the opening battle of the French and Indian War, fought by George Washington and colonial forces in 1754.
Laurel Caverns, the Great Allegheny Passage trail towns, and Ohiopyle's waterfalls, including Cucumber Falls, round out a family-friendly weekend.

The camping season in the Laurel Highlands is defined by Ohiopyle. Kentuck Campground is open from April to mid-December and requires paid reservations made with Ohiopyle State Park in advance to ensure availability. Most private campgrounds in Fayette County follow a similar April-to-October or April-to-November window. Winter camping options are limited to a few year-round private parks and dispersed state forest sites.
Summer is peak. Millions of visitors come to Ohiopyle State Park each year, and crowds are inevitable at popular trails and viewpoints, so summer and holiday weekends should be avoided if you want to dodge the masses. RV sites at private parks near Smock fill weeks ahead for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. The main whitewater rafting season is April to October, with the biggest water in spring.
Fall brings the region's best weather for touring: cooler days, lower humidity, and hardwood color across Chestnut Ridge and Laurel Ridge, usually peaking in mid-October. Spring is wetter and rivers run high, which is ideal for rafting but muddy for trails.

Dan’s camper was perfect for our weekend camping trip. It was clean, organized, and fit our family of 4 with plenty of room. Dan was very helpful at pick up and drop off getting everything hooked up and offloaded.

For summer weekends and fall foliage dates, reserve two to three months out. Weekday and shoulder-season stays are usually available with much shorter notice.

What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Smock rolls quickly into the Allegheny foothills. Roads east toward Ohiopyle and Farmington include grades and tight turns; SR 2019 is very steep, so large RVs should avoid this road and take PA 40 to SR 2010, the Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road. Larger fifth-wheels and Class A rigs should stick to Route 51, Route 40, and PA 381.
Hookup levels vary. Private parks near Smock typically offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, and Wi-Fi. At Kentuck Campground inside Ohiopyle, RVs are welcome and select sites offer electric hookups, but there are no full hookups, and a dump station is available on site. Plan on filling fresh water and dumping before or after state-park stays.
Bears, deer, and raccoons are active across the Laurel Highlands, so food should stay stowed. Cell coverage is solid near Smock and along Route 51 but drops in the Youghiogheny gorge and on backcountry trails.
