Campgrounds and RV parks near South Connellsville, PA

The Youghiogheny River drives most trip planning in the area. Guided and self-guided whitewater rafting, kayaking, and tubing run through Ohiopyle, and the park's natural waterslides at Meadow Run and the view from Cucumber Falls are standard family stops. Fishing along the river, especially for trout, is popular from spring through fall. On land, the Great Allegheny Passage runs directly through Ohiopyle, giving cyclists a crushed-limestone route between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Maryland. The park also serves as the southern terminus for the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, which traverses the Laurel Ridge to its northern end near Johnstown. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob are within a short drive, along with Fort Necessity National Battlefield and Laurel Caverns.

Peak season runs late spring through mid-fall, driven by warm-weather rafting, cycling on the Great Allegheny Passage, and family camping around school breaks. Weekends in July and August book earliest, and fall foliage weekends in late September and October fill quickly as leaf-peepers move through the Laurel Highlands. Spring brings high, cold water on the Youghiogheny, strong waterfall flow, and muddy trails. It is a good window for anglers and cyclists who want cooler riding, though overnight lows can still drop near freezing into early May. Rainfall is steady across spring and summer, so awnings and quick-dry gear are useful. Winter is quiet. Kentuck Campground is open from April to mid-December, so the state campground is closed through the deepest winter months, and several private parks reduce services or close entirely. Cross-country skiing and snowmobile riding are available across the park in the colder months, but RV travelers should confirm road access and any winterization requirements before booking.

The terrain around Ohiopyle is hilly, and access roads to Kentuck Campground are steep and winding. SR 2019 is very steep, and large RVs should avoid this road and take PA 40 to SR 2010 (Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Rd.) instead. Hookups vary: state-park sites offer electric on select loops with no full hookups, while private resorts in the area generally offer water, electric, and sewer. Cell service is limited on the ridge above the river and inside sections of the park, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is worthwhile. Bathhouses at Kentuck have flush toilets and hot showers, and there is a sanitary dump station in the park. Bears and other wildlife are present, so food and trash should be stored accordingly.
