Campgrounds near Tarentum
Tarentum sits along the Allegheny River in Allegheny County, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh. The location puts RV travelers within reach of both the city and the wooded ridges of western Pennsylvania, with river access, rail-trail networks, and several private campgrounds serving as practical bases for a trip.
Mountain Top Campground is the closest option to town, set on a ridge above the valley with full-hookup RV sites and views over the surrounding countryside. Smith Grove Camp Grounds and Wallace Trailer Sales and Court offer additional private-park choices in the immediate area, while Buttercup Woodlands Campground provides a more wooded setting a short drive out.
RV travelers heading south toward the Laurel Highlands often use Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey as a staging point for day trips into the city. Together these properties cover a range of hookup levels and site styles suitable for weekend stays or longer visits.
Things to do near Tarentum
The Allegheny River is the main draw, with boat launches, fishing, and paddling access from public ramps. The Butler-Freeport Community Trail runs nearby and offers a flat, crushed-limestone rail-trail suitable for family biking, while Deer Lakes Park adds fishing lakes, hiking loops, and a playground within a short drive.
Pittsburgh is close enough for a half-day trip. Families use Tarentum as a base for visits to the Pittsburgh Zoo, Carnegie Science Center, and the Strip District. Fall foliage drives through the ridges east of town are a common shoulder-season activity, and Crooked Creek Lake to the northeast offers additional day-use recreation.

The Tarentum area follows a humid continental pattern with four distinct seasons. Summer is the busiest camping window, running from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private parks fill on weekends and Pennsylvania state park sites in the wider region see the heaviest demand. Thunderstorms are common on hot afternoons, and humidity can be high.
Spring brings mud, variable temperatures, and rising river levels; some private campgrounds open in April, and shoulder-season sites are easier to secure. Fall is a popular stretch for RV travel, with cool nights, lower bug pressure, and peak foliage typically arriving in mid to late October across the ridges surrounding the Allegheny Valley.
Winter camping is limited. Mountain Top Campground operates year-round, but many nearby private parks close from late fall through early spring, and freezing temperatures make water hookups unreliable. Snow accumulation is common from December through March, and travelers should check road conditions on secondary routes.

Dan’s camper was perfect for our weekend camping trip. It was clean, organized, and fit our family of 4 with plenty of room. Dan was very helpful at pick up and drop off getting everything hooked up and offloaded.

How to book a campsite
Private parks around Tarentum, including Mountain Top Campground, Smith Grove Camp Grounds, Buttercup Woodlands Campground, and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey, take reservations directly through their own websites or through platforms like Campspot and koa.com. Summer weekends and any fall foliage weekend should be booked well in advance, often several months out for full-hookup sites.
For Pennsylvania state park campgrounds in the surrounding region, reservations are handled through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations system operated by DCNR. Most sites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, opening at noon Eastern Time, with a two-night minimum stay required when a Saturday is included during the summer season.
What to expect
Terrain around Tarentum is hilly, with campgrounds sitting on ridges or in wooded valleys, and Mountain Top Campground itself sits at roughly 1,060 feet in elevation. Access roads to some private parks are narrow and winding, and larger rigs should confirm site length and turning clearance before arrival. Site pads are typically gravel and may need leveling blocks.
Hookup availability varies. Mountain Top Campground offers full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, a dump station, an in-season bathhouse with pay showers and laundry, and campground Wi-Fi, while other nearby parks range from partial hookups to more rustic setups. Cell service is generally reliable in the Allegheny Valley corridor but can drop in wooded ridge sections. Store food securely, as black bear activity is documented across the wider region.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tarentum,PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Tarentum?

No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any standard motorhome or trailer on RVezy, even larger Class A coaches. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during booking, so there is nothing to print, mail, or notarize. Visiting from overseas? Booking your Tarentum RV trip is low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets cancellation policies across the entire platform, with a grace-period window after booking when you can receive a full refund if plans change. Beyond that, refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, you receive a refund or travel credit. The full details are spelled out in the RVezy Help Center so you know exactly where you stand before you book. Pro tip: book early to lock in summer dates, you will still have flexibility built in.

Absolutely, pups are welcome on plenty of Tarentum trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental in Tarentum, and your four-legged copilot is good to go. Many local hosts charge a small pet fee (often $25 to $75 per trip) to cover extra cleaning, which is shown directly on the listing. Once you are on the road, Hartwood Acres Park, North Park, and the Rachel Carson Trail all welcome leashed dogs. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, summer humidity along the Allegheny River can get sticky for furry friends.
alleghenycounty.us/Services/ParksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Tarentum?
Yes, and it is a game-changer for first-timers. Many Tarentum-area hosts offer RV delivery, meaning they will haul the rig to your campsite at Crooked Creek Lake, a private campground, or even your driveway in Pittsburgh's North Hills, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Look for the Delivery filter on RVezy when searching for your motorhome rental in Tarentum. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile round-trip from the host's location. Pro tip: ask about delivery during shoulder season, hosts are often flexible on fees in May or October when bookings slow down.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tarentum,PennsylvaniaHow many miles do I get, and can I find an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
You have options. Most Tarentum hosts include around 100 to 150 free miles per night, which is plenty for a weekend at Moraine State Park (about 45 miles away) or Ohiopyle State Park (about 75 miles southeast). Extra miles typically run about $0.30 to $0.45 each. If you are planning a longer Tarentum RV trip, such as Cook Forest State Park (about 90 miles north) or Niagara Falls (about 200 miles), filter for hosts offering unlimited mileage or a higher daily allowance, several Tarentum listings include it. Pro tip: message the host with your rough itinerary before booking, many will bundle extra miles into a custom quote.

May and early June bring mild days in the 65 to 78 degree range and blooming dogwoods along the Allegheny River, perfect for hiking the Rachel Carson Trail. July and August are warm and humid (highs around 82 to 86 degrees, with afternoon thunderstorms common), great for swimming at Crooked Creek Lake. September and October are arguably the best months, with crisp 55 to 75 degree days and Laurel Highlands foliage typically peaking in mid-October. Pro tip: aim for the second or third weekend of October for peak color along Route 28.
weather.gov/pbz/Can I rent an RV in Tarentum in winter?
Yes, winter RVing in the Allegheny Valley is absolutely doable, and quieter than you would think. Several Tarentum hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces sized for sub-freezing nights (January lows in Tarentum average around 22 degrees Fahrenheit). Raccoon Creek State Park has winter sites about 35 miles southwest, and several private parks in the region remain partially open. When you filter listings on RVezy, message hosts directly to confirm the rig is winter-ready and ask about heat tape and shore power. Pro tip: a winter trip to Ohiopyle for frozen Cucumber Falls is unforgettable, and weekend campground rates can be far lower than summer pricing.

Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for system questions like how to reset the inverter, and RVezy support has your back if anything bigger comes up. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside assistance number at pickup so it is saved offline.

Crossing into Canada toward Niagara is allowed on many RVezy rentals, but Mexico is not. Pro tip: confirm cross-border travel directly with your host before booking.
visitpa.com/regions/pittsburgh-and-its-countrysideWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost?
Budgeting fuel is easier than you would think. Around Tarentum, expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A, 10 to 13 MPG for a Class C motorhome rental in Tarentum, 14 to 18 MPG for a campervan rental in Tarentum, and 12 to 16 MPG for the tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Gas prices in the Pittsburgh metro typically sit slightly above the national average due to PA fuel taxes, with diesel often running 30 to 50 cents higher. The Sheetz stations along Route 28 and the Costco in Cranberry (about 20 miles north) are reliably among the cheapest local fill-ups. Pro tip: use GasBuddy to compare prices and fuel up before crossing into PA from Ohio where prices are sometimes lower.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Tarentum?
For peak summer (mid-June through Labor Day) and fall foliage weekends, book campgrounds 4 to 6 months out. Pennsylvania State Parks like Moraine, Raccoon Creek, and Ohiopyle open reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official PA State Parks reservation system, and prime weekends can fill within hours of opening. Private parks in the area typically take reservations through their own systems or platforms like Campspot, where 2 to 3 months out is usually safe for shoulder season. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday, snag a Sunday-through-Thursday booking instead, the best campgrounds near Tarentum often have weekday openings even in July.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What is it like driving an RV around Tarentum?
Driving conditions around Tarentum are RV-friendly once you know the routes. Route 28 (the main artery from Pittsburgh through Tarentum to Kittanning) is a divided multi-lane highway with gentle grades, comfortable for any size rig. Avoid the narrow, hilly older roads near the Tarentum Bridge at rush hour (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM) and steer clear of downtown Pittsburgh tunnels in tall Class A coaches, check posted clearance signs before entering. Winter can bring snow and salt-treated roads. Pro tip: use the PennDOT 511PA app for live traffic, restrictions, and clearance info before heading toward the Laurel Highlands.
511pa.com/Where can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near Tarentum?
You have solid options nearby. Most full-hookup sites at private campgrounds in the Tarentum area include sewer right at your site, so you can dump on departure. Crooked Creek Lake Campground (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) has a public dump station near the entrance, and Moraine State Park has a seasonal dump station as well. For potable water, every PA state park campground mentioned has spigots at the host station or central fill points. Truck stops along I-76 and I-79 around Pittsburgh also offer dump and fill services for a small fee. Pro tip: dump and fill before you arrive at smaller parks like Crooked Creek, the lines on Sunday checkout can be long.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat is inside the RV: beds, kitchen, bathroom, WiFi?
You are getting a real home on wheels. Most Tarentum RV rentals sleep 4 to 8 people and include a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and propane furnace, essential for humid PA summers and chilly fall nights), a dinette, and exterior storage. Larger Class A and Class C rigs often add slide-outs, TVs with DVD or streaming, and onboard generators. WiFi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot as an add-on for about $10 to $20 per night, and major carriers like Verizon and AT&T generally work well across the Allegheny Valley. Pro tip: confirm the seatbelt count matches your travel party before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tarentum,PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup work?
Tarentum hosts make it easy to customize. Popular add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and utensils ($25 to $50), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour), bike racks, fire pits, camp chairs, and outdoor rugs. Some hosts include them free, others itemize, and you will see exactly what is offered on each listing. Pickup is usually a 30 to 45 minute walkthrough at the host's home or storage lot in Tarentum, Natrona Heights, or New Kensington, with checkout the same way. Most listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage at about $0.30 to $0.45 per mile. Pro tip: ask about a late-checkout add-on for Sunday returns, many hosts are flexible if you ask early.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tarentum,PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy when you book, the platform processes your card and holds the funds, so there is no cash, no checks, and no driveway handoff. Security deposits are separate from the booking payment and typically range from $500 to $1,500 for Tarentum rentals depending on the RV's value. They are held as an authorization (not a charge) on your card before pickup, then released after a clean return. To avoid issues: take dated photos and a quick video of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff, dump your tanks if your contract requires it, and refuel to the agreed level. Pro tip: use a credit card (not debit) so the deposit hold does not tie up your checking account.
