Campgrounds and RV parks near West Newton, PA

West Newton sits along the Youghiogheny River in Westmoreland County, roughly 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The borough is a designated Trail Town on the Great Allegheny Passage, the rail-trail linking Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. That location shapes the camping mix: developed RV parks a short drive from the trailhead, plus rustic hiker-biker sites strung along the corridor. RV travelers typically base themselves at full-hookup parks in the surrounding townships. Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey and Fox Den Acres Campgrounds sit within easy reach of downtown Pittsburgh and the Laurel Highlands. The Blue Canoe RV Resort and Firehouse RV Campgrounds add newer options in the area, and Wallace Trailer Sales and Court serves longer-term stays. The region works well as a two-part trip: urban attractions in Pittsburgh to the west, and the Laurel Highlands, Ohiopyle State Park, and Fallingwater to the southeast. Most sites are open spring through fall, with a smaller subset staying online in winter.

Private campgrounds around West Newton, including the KOA Journey and Fox Den Acres, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Sites with full hookups, pull-throughs, and larger rig spaces go first, so book eight to twelve weeks ahead for summer weekends and holidays. Pennsylvania state park campsites, including Ohiopyle's Kentuck Campground and Laurel Hill State Park, are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system. The booking window opens eleven months in advance at noon Eastern Time, and popular summer dates are often taken the day the window opens. For primitive and hiker-biker sites along the Great Allegheny Passage, rules vary by site: some accept walk-ups while others require advance reservations. Confirm with each campground before arriving.
