Campgrounds and RV parks near Awendaw, SC

Awendaw sits on U.S. Highway 17 in coastal Charleston County, wedged between the Intracoastal Waterway and the roughly 260,000-acre Francis Marion National Forest. The town is about a half-hour drive north of downtown Charleston and serves as the mainland entry point for Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, a 65,000-acre expanse of salt marsh, barrier islands, and tidal creeks that is mostly reachable only by boat. RV renters typically base themselves at private parks closer to Charleston or Mount Pleasant, then day-trip north into the forest and refuge. Mount Pleasant / Charleston KOA Holiday and Charleston KOA Holiday put travelers within easy reach of Awendaw, historic Charleston, and area beaches. Farther inland toward North Charleston and Ladson, Ladson RV Park, Oak Plantation Campground, and Lake Aire RV Park Campground offer full-hookup sites suited to larger rigs. Expect flat lowcountry terrain, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, tidal creeks, and long stretches of maritime forest. Grocery and fuel options in Awendaw itself are limited, so most renters stock up in Mount Pleasant before heading north.

Private campgrounds near Awendaw, including Mount Pleasant / Charleston KOA Holiday, Charleston KOA Holiday, Ladson RV Park, Oak Plantation Campground, and Lake Aire RV Park Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Peak demand runs March through May and again in October, plus holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Thanksgiving. For those windows, book several months in advance. Developed campgrounds inside Francis Marion National Forest are reserved through Recreation.gov, with booking windows typically opening six months ahead of arrival. Note that Buck Hall Recreation Area, the popular Forest Service campground on the Intracoastal Waterway near Awendaw, is scheduled to close for a major renovation lasting roughly 18 months, so verify its status on Recreation.gov before planning around it. Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge does not allow overnight camping, so plan to stay at a nearby campground and day-trip in.
