Campgrounds and RV parks near Burton, SC

Hunting Island State Park, about a 45-minute drive east, is the region's headline outdoor stop, with a swimming beach, a climbable lighthouse, salt marsh boardwalks, and a fishing pier. Downtown Beaufort offers waterfront parks, antebellum architecture, and boat tours into the ACE Basin estuary. Families can tour the Parris Island Marine Corps museum, kayak the tidal creeks around St. Helena Island, or visit the Penn Center on the Gullah Geechee cultural heritage corridor. Cyclists use the flat back roads and the Spanish Moss Trail, a rail-trail that runs through Burton and Beaufort. Anglers can pursue red drum, spotted seatrout, and flounder from public docks or charter boats. Shrimp boils, oyster roasts in cooler months, and Bluffton or Hilton Head day trips round out most itineraries.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Lowcountry. March through May brings warm days, lower humidity than summer, and manageable insect pressure, and it lines up with peak wildflower and migratory bird activity in the ACE Basin. October and November cool off after hurricane season winds down and often deliver the driest stretch of the year, with November averaging around 55 mm of rain. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. August is the wettest month, averaging roughly 90 to 175 mm of rain depending on the source, and it also brings the highest humidity. Biting insects, especially no-see-ums and mosquitoes, peak from late spring through early fall along the marshes, so screened outdoor spaces and repellent are useful. Winters are mild but variable. January is the coolest month, with an average high near 58°F and a low near 44°F, cold enough for occasional frost but usually pleasant for daytime activities. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from August into October, and coastal parks may close ahead of named storms.

Most private RV parks in the Burton area offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, and many have pull-through sites suitable for larger Class A rigs and travel trailers. State park sites at Hunting Island have individual water and electric hookups with 20, 30, and 50 amp service but no sewer, with dump stations on site. The terrain is flat, sandy, and often shaded by live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Bring longer leveling blocks for soft ground after heavy rain, and expect coastal humidity to affect awnings, fabrics, and anything left outside overnight. Cell coverage is generally solid in Burton, Beaufort, and along I-95, and weaker in pockets of the Sea Islands. Grocery, propane, fuel, and RV service are all available in Burton and neighboring Beaufort, so resupply between stops is straightforward.
