Campgrounds and RV parks near Cottageville, SC

Paddling the Edisto River is the signature activity. Colleton State Park serves as the headquarters for the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail, and the river connects downstream to Givhans Ferry State Park through about 23 miles of quiet, tea-colored water lined with cypress. Fishing for redbreast, bream, and catfish is popular from banks and boats alike. On land, the Cypress Swamp Nature Trail at Colleton offers an easy walk with a boardwalk out to the river. Givhans Ferry has short hiking trails, a bluff overlook, and picnic shelters. Day trips reach Charleston in about an hour, Edisto Beach State Park to the south, and downtown Walterboro's antique shops and the ACE Basin wildlife refuges to the west.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping in the Cottageville area. March through May brings mild days, blooming azaleas, and rising river levels that favor paddling. September through November delivers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and lower humidity, making it a popular window for weekend bookings. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. August is typically the wettest month of the year, and mosquitoes and biting flies are active near the river. Sites remain open, but travelers should expect strong afternoon sun and plan for shaded or hookup sites where air conditioning is an option. Winters are short and generally mild, with daytime highs often in the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit and occasional freezing nights. State parks stay open year-round, though river levels can rise sharply after winter rains, sometimes limiting boat-ramp access. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk in September, and parks may close temporarily around named storms.

State park sites near Cottageville are typically packed sand pads on paved interior roads, with water, 20/30/50-amp electric, and sewer at Colleton, and water plus electric at most Givhans Ferry sites with a handful of full-hookup sites and a nearby dump station. Bathhouses with hot showers are standard. Cell coverage is generally usable but can be spotty deep in the tree canopy along the river. Expect a Lowcountry atmosphere: shaded sites under live oaks and pines, blackwater river views, and quiet nights. Wildlife includes deer, turtles, wading birds, and snakes, so leashed pets and closed food storage are important. Grocery runs generally mean heading to Walterboro, St. George, or Summerville, as immediate services near the parks are limited to convenience stores.
