Campgrounds and RV parks near Folly Beach, SC

The main draw is the beach itself: roughly six miles of Atlantic shoreline with surfing on the east end, the Folly Beach Fishing Pier in the middle, and the lighthouse view at the county park on the far east tip. Folly is one of the more surf-friendly stretches of the South Carolina coast, and board and bike rentals are easy to find in town. Families typically split time between the beach and Charleston. Downtown is about 20 minutes away for the Battery, Rainbow Row, and the City Market. James Island County Park, just inland, runs a seasonal water park, climbing wall, paved bike trails, and a major holiday lights display in December. Boneyard Beach on nearby Bulls Island and kayaking on the Folly River round out the lineup.

Folly Beach has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Peak camping season runs from late March through October, with the heaviest demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day and over spring break weeks in March and April. Sites at popular Charleston-area campgrounds, including the county-run campground on James Island, often book months out for summer weekends and for December, when the holiday lights festival fills the park. Summer brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity, and Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, peaking in August and September. RV travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories during those months. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for tent campers and for sightseeing in Charleston. Winters are mild enough for shoulder-season RV travel, with occasional cold snaps but very rare measurable snow.

Most campgrounds in the Folly Beach area are flat, sandy, and partly shaded by live oaks and pines. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are standard at the larger RV parks, and pull-through sites for big rigs are common at Lake Aire RV Park Campground and Mount Pleasant / Charleston KOA Holiday. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the Charleston metro. Expect humidity, mosquitoes, and biting flies in the warmer months: screened awnings and bug spray help. Low-lying trees on some access roads, including Riverland Drive on the approach to James Island County Park, can clip tall rigs, so check height clearances before routing. Folly Beach itself has limited large-vehicle parking, so most RV travelers drive a tow vehicle or use rideshare for beach and downtown days.
