Camping near Hamer, South Carolina
Hamer sits in Dillon County in far northeastern South Carolina, directly on the North Carolina line and immediately off Interstate 95. The area is best known as the home of the South of the Border complex, a longtime I-95 landmark visible for miles in either direction along the interstate.
RV travelers use Hamer primarily as a mid-route stopover between the Northeast and Florida, since I-95 Exit 1 puts full-hookup sites within a short walk of restaurants, fuel, and a truck stop. Camp Pedro in Hamer provides full hookup RV and tent camping with wide spaces off I-95 exit 1 at the North Carolina to South Carolina border. Camp Pedro is the closest option to the South of the Border complex, while Bass Lake RV Campground and Bass Lake Campground sit nearby for travelers who want a quieter lakefront setting.
For a more natural experience, Little Pee Dee State Park lies a short drive south near Dillon, and the Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey is roughly twenty minutes north across the state line in North Carolina. Together these five properties give travelers a mix of highway-convenient and lakeside choices within a small radius of Hamer.
Things to do around Hamer
The South of the Border complex is the main on-site attraction and is walkable from Camp Pedro. Campers can take advantage of all that South of the Border has to offer as everything is within walking distance from the campground, including the Tower Arcade with an elevator to the Sombrero Tower observation deck, Pedro's Reptile Lagoon (billed as the largest indoor reptile exhibit in the U.S.), and numerous gift shops. Families with kids typically build an afternoon around the reptile exhibit, the arcade, and the outdoor pool.
For outdoor time, Little Pee Dee State Park offers fishing, paddling, and quiet lakefront recreation on 54-acre Lake Norton, plus short trails through Sandhills forest and a Carolina Bay. Little Pee Dee State Park is a subdued setting for those who want to enjoy the park's natural features or fish the still waters of 54-acre Lake Norton for bream, bass and catfish.
Day trips are practical from Hamer. Dillon lies about six miles south, Florence sits roughly 40 miles to the south, and Myrtle Beach is within about a ninety-minute drive to the southeast.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Hamer. In Dillon, the summers are hot and muggy, the winters are short and cold, and it is wet and partly cloudy year round. March through May and September through November bring mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than the peak of summer.
Summer sees the heaviest bookings on I-95 as families drive to and from Florida and the Carolina beaches. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and late summer is the wettest stretch locally, with August typically the rainiest month. Peak Atlantic hurricane activity runs from mid-August through October, and remnant tropical systems have produced the region's largest single-day rainfall totals on record. The highest daily rainfall recorded in Dillon County (CoCoRaHS) is 9.25 inches, at the Dillon 3.8 NW station, tied to a tropical system in September.
Winter is the slow season. Nights dip near or below freezing at times, but daytime highs are usually mild enough for pull-through overnight stays, and reservations are easier to secure at both private parks and the state park.
How to book near Hamer
Little Pee Dee State Park is reserved through the South Carolina State Parks system, either toll-free at 1-866-345-PARK or through the online reservations page, with rates that vary by season and demand and a minimum of two nights. The maximum cumulative stay for most parks is 42 out of 49 days, though during peak season parks may shorten this to a 14-day consecutive limit, after which campers must leave the park for 7 days. Reservations at state parks may be made up to 13 months in advance.
Camp Pedro is booked directly through the South of the Border site (sobpedro.com) or by phone. For campers arriving late, after the campground office has closed for the evening, late check-in is provided at the Motel office. Bass Lake RV Campground and Bass Lake Campground are booked directly with the operators near Dillon. The Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey books through the KOA site or app, with cancellation notice required in advance of arrival to avoid losing the deposit.
What to expect on site
Camp Pedro is a large, gated, paved-site RV park geared to overnight travelers. Camp Pedro is a 100 full hook-up site campground with 30 and 50 amp service, free Wi-Fi, showers and laundry facilities. All sites are paved, campers have access to laundry rooms and bath houses plus stores within walking distance and free Wi-Fi, and pool passes are included for the indoor and outdoor pools and sauna at the motel.
Little Pee Dee State Park is smaller and quieter, with a mix of hookup and tent sites plus one camper cabin on the lake. The park offers 18 standard sites with electric and water, 11 full-hookup sites with electric, water and sewer, and 18 designated tent sites with central water. One lakefront camper cabin is available year-round, sleeps four with a set of bunk beds and a full-size bed, and includes a coffee maker, mini-fridge, heat and air conditioning, though there is no running water inside and linens are not provided.
The Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey is a highway stopover in North Carolina with long pull-throughs, full hookups, a pool, and pet areas, booked through KOA.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Hamer, SC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hamer, SC?
RV rental in Hamer, SC is surprisingly affordable thanks to a wide range of host-owned rigs on RVezy. Travel trailers typically start around $80 to $125 per night, campervans run roughly $150 to $200, and larger Class A and Class C motorhomes generally fall between $175 and $295 nightly. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can filter by budget, sleeps count, and RV type to find the best match. For a cheap RV rental Hamer travelers love, look for travel trailers with delivery to Camp Pedro at South of the Border, and book midweek or in shoulder months (March or October) when nightly rates and I-95 traffic both drop. Pro tip: book early for NASCAR weekends at nearby Darlington Raceway, when prices spike fast.
southcarolinaparks.com/camping-and-lodging/camping/tent-and-rvDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Hamer, South Carolina?
Good news: for almost every RV rental Hamer SC hosts list on RVezy, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. South Carolina only requires a Class E or Class F non-commercial license if you're driving a motor home or combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) over 26,000 pounds, which is rare on peer-to-peer rentals. You'll need to be 25 or older and pass a quick ID confirmation through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-timers are shocked at how simple the paperwork is. Then it's just sunshine, sweet tea, and I-95 ahead.
dmv.sc.gov/driver-services/drivers-license/non-commercial-license---classes-e-fWhat protection or insurance is included when I rent an RV in Hamer?
Every RV rental in Hamer booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull off I-95 with confidence. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind. During checkout you (not the host) choose the protection tier that fits your trip, whether you are parking one night at Camp Pedro or doing a longer Hamer RV trip down to the coast. Combined with the host walkthrough at pickup, it means you are never alone on the road. Tip: review the coverage options carefully and pick the tier that matches your comfort level for the best night's sleep at the campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Hamer RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without worry. Refund eligibility depends on how far in advance of your trip you cancel, and you will see the exact terms before you confirm payment. This matters in Hamer because the I-95 corridor can see tropical storms in late summer and rare winter ice events. Pro tip: book your motorhome rental in Hamer early to get your pick of inventory, knowing you have flexibility built into the platform if your plans shift. Reach RVezy support anytime before, during, or after the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Hamer, SC?
Absolutely, Hamer is very dog-friendly. Plenty of RVezy hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Hamer that guests can book in one click using the Pet-Friendly filter. Camp Pedro at South of the Border welcomes leashed pets, and Little Pee Dee State Park (about 20 minutes south near Dillon) allows dogs on its trails for great morning walks under the pines. South Carolina State Parks require pets to stay on a physical leash at all times. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any small cleaning fee or pet count, and pack a portable water bowl, because summer pavement in the Pee Dee region heats up fast.
southcarolinaparks.com/little-pee-deeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Hamer?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to start your trip. Many Hamer hosts offer RV delivery that renters love, dropping the rig directly at Camp Pedro at South of the Border, Little Pee Dee State Park near Dillon, or even a private driveway. The host levels it, hooks up water, power, and sewer, and walks you through everything from the awning to the propane. That makes RVezy ideal if you are flying into Florence Regional Airport (about 40 minutes south) or Myrtle Beach International (about 75 minutes east) and do not want to tow anything. Use the Delivery filter when you search. Pro tip: many hosts include free delivery within a set radius of Hamer, so check the listing details first.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hamer%2C%20South%20CarolinaHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Hamer?

Popular drives include Myrtle Beach (about 70 miles, 1.5 hours east), Wilmington, NC (about 90 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes northeast), Charleston, SC (about 145 miles, 2.5 hours south), Charlotte, NC (about 110 miles, 2 hours northwest), and Savannah, GA (around 250 miles, 4 hours south). Each host sets their own mileage policy, with some offering generous daily limits and others an RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: ask the host upfront and map out your route. Doing a coast-and-mountains loop? Asheville is about 4 hours west, perfect for a long weekend.
fhwa.dot.gov/about/Where are the best campgrounds near Hamer, SC?
You are spoiled for choice. The closest option is Camp Pedro at South of the Border on US Highway 301/501 in Hamer, a full-hookup RV park with 30/50-amp service, pull-through sites, pool access, and walkable access to Pedro's Reptile Lagoon and the Sombrero Tower. Little Pee Dee State Park near Dillon (about 20 minutes south) offers quiet sites with water and electric hookups on Lake Norton, perfect for fishing bream and bass. Lumberton/I-95 KOA Journey sits about 20 minutes north across the NC line. For RV camping in Hamer, locals recommend booking Little Pee Dee well ahead through the official South Carolina State Parks reservation system, since it is small and fills up fast on weekends.
southcarolinaparks.com/little-pee-deeWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Hamer?
Hamer has a humid subtropical climate, so the sweet spot is spring (mid-March through May) and fall (late September through early November), when highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 80 degrees F range and humidity drops. Summers reach the upper 80s to low 90s with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, while winters are short and mild with highs in the 50s and 60s, occasional freezes, and rare ice events. That means RV camping in Hamer is a year-round option, especially compared with the northern US. Pro tip: October is golden, with cooler temperatures, fewer I-95 travelers, and gorgeous longleaf pine scenery at Little Pee Dee State Park, plus easy day trips to Myrtle Beach without the summer crowds.
weather.gov/ilm/I have never rented an RV before. Will I get help?
You will not be left guessing. Every RVezy host in Hamer provides a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water and sewer hookups, propane, and any quirks of that specific rig. You can also message your host anytime through the RVezy app, even mid-trip. For your first time renting an RV, consider a smaller travel trailer or Class C motorhome and book a delivered setup at Camp Pedro, where the paved sites and friendly staff make day one feel like a soft landing. Pro tip: arrive in daylight, take photos during your walkthrough, and keep your host's number handy. Most renters say they felt confident behind the wheel by the time they reached Myrtle Beach.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on I-95, a dead battery at Little Pee Dee State Park, or the AC quits on a 92 degree F Hamer afternoon, help is one phone call away. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app and usually knows the closest trusted mechanic in Dillon or Florence. Tip: before you pull out of Camp Pedro, save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone, and do a quick walk-around at every fuel stop along I-95 to catch small issues before they become big ones. Peace of mind comes standard.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hamer RV rental into North Carolina or down to Florida?
Yes, and it is one of the best parts of renting here. Hamer sits right at the South Carolina to North Carolina border at I-95 Exit 1, so crossing state lines is effortless. Most RVezy hosts allow interstate travel anywhere in the continental US, including popular routes down I-95 to Savannah, Jacksonville, and Orlando, or north to Virginia Beach and Washington, DC. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not apply there. Canada trips may be allowed by some hosts, so message them directly to confirm. Pro tip: tell your host your full route at booking. They can flag any state-specific tolls and help you plan fuel stops.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Hamer?
South Carolina has some of the lowest gas prices on the East Coast, which makes fueling up in Hamer a real win. Camp Pedro sits next door to Pedro's Truck Stop on US-301, with diesel and regular pumps sized for big rigs. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, and 12 to 18 MPG for a truck-and-travel-trailer combo. A typical 300-mile round trip to Charleston might burn $80 to $150 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in South Carolina before crossing into North Carolina, where state gas taxes are higher. Use the GasBuddy app to track prices along I-95.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hamer?
For a smooth trip, book your campsite as soon as your RV is confirmed. Little Pee Dee State Park near Dillon takes reservations well in advance through the official South Carolina State Parks reservation portal, and weekends from April through October sell out early, especially around Memorial Day and July 4th. Camp Pedro at South of the Border is more flexible with its full-hookup sites and frequent walk-up availability, but holiday weekends and Bike Week (May and September in Myrtle Beach) fill quickly. Pro tip: if a state park site is sold out, set up cancellation alerts. Spots open daily as plans change, and a lakeside site at Little Pee Dee is worth the wait.
southcarolinaparks.com/little-pee-deeWhat are the driving conditions like around Hamer?
Hamer's terrain is flat coastal-plain country, so driving an RV here is about as easy as it gets in the Southeast, even for first-timers. I-95 runs right through town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and US-301 and US-501 give you slower scenic alternatives. Watch for sudden summer thunderstorms that can drop heavy rain on I-95 between June and September, and the occasional patchy morning fog in the Pee Dee swamp lowlands. Truck traffic is steady on I-95, so leave extra following distance. Pro tip: avoid Sunday afternoons in summer when beach traffic heading home from Myrtle Beach backs up I-95 northbound. Early-morning departures from Camp Pedro mean smoother sailing and cooler cab temperatures.
scdot.org/travel/travel-sctraffic.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Hamer offer?
Most campgrounds near Hamer are well-equipped for RVs. Camp Pedro at South of the Border offers full-hookup sites with 30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer, paved pads, Wi-Fi, bathhouses, laundry, picnic tables, and pool access at the South of the Border resort. Little Pee Dee State Park has water and electric sites, an on-site dump station, hot showers, and a fishing pier on Lake Norton. Both have potable water fill-ups. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks before leaving Camp Pedro if you are heading deeper into a state park, where hookups can be more limited and groceries are about 20 miles away in Dillon.
southcarolinaparks.com/little-pee-deeWhat should I expect inside an RV rental in Hamer?
RVezy rentals in Hamer come fully equipped for comfortable living from day one. Most include a queen or king bed, plus convertible dinette and bunk options that sleep anywhere from 4 to 10. You will find a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (essential for South Carolina summers), a furnace for cool winter nights, and seatbelts at designated travel seats. Many also have a flat-screen TV, an onboard generator, propane hookups, and outdoor speakers. Wi-Fi varies, so check the listing. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and amenities like generator or solar if you plan to boondock or stop at rest areas en route to a campervan rental Hamer adventure along the coast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hamer%2C%20South%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and options can I get with a Hamer RV rental?
Hosts offering RV rental in South Carolina often bundle in extras that make life easier. Common add-ons include linens and bedding packs, kitchen kits with pots and dishes, outdoor camp chairs and tables, generators, propane refills, bike racks, and pet packages. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup for a flat fee based on distance from Hamer, plus dump-and-fill service so you return the RV clean. Mileage policies vary: some include 100 to 150 free miles per day, while others advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage for a higher base rate. Pro tip: pickup is usually mid-afternoon and dropoff mid-morning, so plan one extra night at Camp Pedro to avoid a rushed return after a long day at Myrtle Beach.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hamer%2C%20South%20CarolinaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and all handled inside the RVezy platform. You pay with a credit or debit card when you book, and your money is held safely until the trip starts, so there is never any cash exchanged with the host in a Camp Pedro parking lot. A refundable security deposit is collected separately before pickup and is returned shortly after the trip ends, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition it left. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a short walk-around video at both pickup and dropoff to document everything. Most family RV trip renters in Hamer say this five-minute habit makes the deposit return effortless and keeps the post-trip experience as smooth as the drive home.
