Campgrounds and RV parks near Laurel Bay, SC

The biggest natural draw in the area is Hunting Island State Park on Saint Helena Island, with five miles of beach, thousands of acres of marsh, tidal creeks and maritime forest, a saltwater lagoon and ocean inlet, plus a fishing pier and the historic Hunting Island Lighthouse, dating from the 1870s and standing 132.5 feet tall. It is a straightforward day trip from most campgrounds around Laurel Bay. Historic downtown Beaufort sits minutes away, with waterfront parks, antebellum architecture, and boat tours through the salt marshes. Guests staying at Hilton Head National RV Resort or Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort and Marina have quick access to island beaches, bike paths, and dolphin cruises. Farther inland, the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge offers wildlife drives, alligator viewing, and paddling routes through cypress swamps.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV camping in the Lowcountry. Daytime highs sit in the seventies, humidity drops, and biting insects are less aggressive than in midsummer. Many travelers time trips to Hunting Island State Park for these shoulder seasons, when oceanfront sites are still busy but slightly easier to book. Summer brings heat, high humidity, and daily thunderstorms. August is the month with the most rainfall in Beaufort, with rain falling for 21.8 days and accumulating about 90mm of precipitation. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk in August and September, so RV travelers should track forecasts closely and know their campground's evacuation policy. Winters are mild but variable. In January, Beaufort averages a high of about 58°F and a low around 44°F, cool enough for jackets in the evening but comfortable for sightseeing. Most campgrounds in the Beaufort area remain open year-round with varying levels of amenities and services.

Most private parks in the area offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, sewer, water, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Site surfaces range from gravel and grass at wooded properties like Tuck In the Wood Campgrounds to paved pads at larger resorts. Expect Spanish moss, tall pines, and live oaks over many sites, which is scenic but can limit satellite reception. Bugs are part of the deal. Mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and gnats are active from spring through fall, so pack repellent and screens. Some Lowcountry parks have a long-term resident population alongside overnight sites, so it is worth checking recent reviews before booking. Roads into the area are flat and RV-friendly, with I-95 and US-17 handling most inbound traffic.
