Campgrounds and RV parks near Pimlico, SC

Fishing drives much of the local recreation. Lake Moultrie covers 60,400 acres and is 14 miles across at its widest point, and the connected Santee Cooper system is known for largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and record-class blue catfish. Lake Moultrie RV Park & Marina and Angel's Landing Campground Restaurant and Marina both offer direct lake access and boat launches. The Palmetto Trail's Lake Moultrie Passage and the 47-mile Swamp Fox Passage through Francis Marion National Forest give hikers and cyclists long, flat routes across dikes and pine flatwoods. The Swamp Fox Passage traverses swamps, longleaf pine forests, savannas, and cypress pools, with primitive camping available at several designated points along the route. Charleston, about 30 miles south, adds historic sites, aquarium visits, and beach days at Isle of Palms or Sullivan's Island.

Spring, roughly mid-March through May, is generally the most comfortable window for RV travel. Days warm quickly, humidity is still moderate, and rainfall is lower than in summer. This is also prime spring fishing on Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion, and reservations at commercial parks near Charleston fill fastest during this stretch. Summer brings hot, muggy conditions with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. July and August are among the wettest months of the year, and Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November with peak activity in August and September. RV travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and expect possible closures or evacuations along the coast during named storms. Fall cools off after mid-October and offers steadier weather for camping. Winter is mild by North American standards, with daytime highs typically in the upper 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit, though brief freezes occur. Some waterfowl management areas around the Santee Cooper lakes close to public access from early November through March to protect wintering birds and support scheduled hunts, so check SCDNR access rules before planning a shoulder-season trip.

The terrain around Pimlico is flat Lowcountry: pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, tidal creeks, and lake shoreline generally only a few feet above the water table. Expect mosquitoes and biting flies from late spring into fall, especially near marshes and standing water, and pack repellent along with sun protection. Alligators are present in Lake Moultrie, Lake Marion, and adjacent wetlands, so keep pets leashed near shorelines and never approach or feed wildlife. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Moncks Corner and along U.S. 17, but can drop inside Francis Marion National Forest. Groceries, fuel, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Moncks Corner and along the I-26 corridor toward North Charleston. Some lakeside parks are a fair drive from a full-service grocery store, so stock up before leaving town.
