Campgrounds and RV parks near Ridgeville, SC

The Edisto River is the main draw. Kayaking, tubing, hiking, and fishing are all available at Givhans Ferry State Park. Edisto River Adventures is the only tubing company to offer a full-service tubing operation on the Edisto River, operating out of Riverfront Hall at Givhans Ferry State Park from May to September. The 1.5-mile River Bluff Nature Trail starts at the parking area and traverses several moderately steep slopes, crossing a canal before following the bluff overlooking the Edisto River. Beyond the park, Ridgeville puts RV travelers within an easy drive of downtown Summerville's shops and gardens, and about a 35-mile drive to downtown Charleston. Day trips inland reach Francis Marion National Forest and Colleton State Park, the upstream anchor of the Edisto paddling trail.

The Lowcountry climate is humid subtropical, and the shoulder seasons are the most comfortable for RV travel. Spring brings warm days, wildflowers, and river levels usually holding up well for paddling. Fall through mid-November brings drier air, cooler nights, and lower humidity. Summerville and the surrounding area experience a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, cool winters, and abundant precipitation throughout the year, especially in summer when heavy downpours and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Summers are hot, sticky, and stormy, with peak humidity from June through September. This is also Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November and peaks in September. Coastal watches can disrupt reservations inland as well, so travelers should track NHC advisories in late summer and early fall. Winters are mild by North American standards, with cool nights, occasional frost, and the lowest visitation of the year. Cabins and RV sites are easiest to book, but river outfitters and some park amenities scale back.

Expect Lowcountry pine and hardwood forest, sandy soils, and shaded loops. Givhans Ferry State Park offers a shaded campground, a nature trail, and picnic shelters available for rent, with hookup levels varying by loop; check specific site details when reserving. Cell service in the river corridor can be spotty. Bugs are a factor from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent and consider a screen room. Firewood rules are strict: all firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be from within the state and from less than 50 miles away. Pets are not allowed in the cabins or the cabin areas, but they are allowed in most other outdoor areas provided they are kept under physical restraint or on a leash not longer than six feet. Private parks around Summerville and Ladson typically offer full hookups, laundry, and easier big-rig access.
